Sixteen Chinese nationals were arrested in Thailand’s Aranyaprathet district after allegedly crossing the border illegally from Cambodia. The arrest, which took place early Friday morning, resulted in the seizure of 266 mobile phones and a laptop. The suspects, comprising 15 men and one woman, lacked passports or valid entry documents.

The operation was launched by Col Bancha Charnchalard, following intelligence reports of a planned border crossing. Soldiers from the Khlong Hat Special Task Unit and Ranger Company 1305 conducted patrols and encountered the group in Khlong Wa Mai village, 1.1km from the border. The group was reportedly carrying luggage and attempting to enter Thai territory via a natural border crossing.

Upon stopping the individuals, authorities conducted a search and uncovered the electronics hidden within the luggage. During questioning, the group stated they were administrators for online scam operations in Poipet, Cambodia. They alleged their employer intended to send them to another country against their will, prompting them to flee using Cambodian brokers for assistance at a cost of 3,500 baht each.

The arrested individuals were processed at Ranger Company 1305 before being handed over to the Khlong Namsai station. They face charges of illegal entry, and authorities are investigating whether the devices are linked to broader criminal networks. This operation highlights ongoing efforts to curb illegal activities and human trafficking along the Thai-Cambodian border.

Looking forward, Thai authorities are extending their investigation to uncover potential connections to transnational criminal operations. This incident underscores the importance of strong border surveillance and international cooperation in tackling cross-border crimes, reported Bangkok Post.
