The Philippine National Police (PNP) has ramped up its campaign against online child harassment and exploitation, with a specific focus on the misuse of artificial intelligence (AI). PNP chief Gen. Jose Melencio C. Nartatez, Jr. directed the Anti-Cybercrime Group (ACG) to investigate reported threats, particularly those targeting children on social media platforms. This move comes as child rights advocates highlight an increase in AI-enabled abuses.

Child advocacy groups have raised concerns about technological abuses involving Filipino children, often utilizing apps for creating manipulated sexual images, deepfake content, and impersonation scams. These developments prompted the PNP to collaborate with other government agencies to protect children from online threats. Gen. Nartatez emphasized the commitment to preempt such abuses from affecting young individuals.

In response, the PNP called on the public to be vigilant and report any suspicious online activities. Gen. Nartatez urged parents, guardians, and communities to bolster efforts in safeguarding minors and stressed that the responsibility for protection begins at home. The PNP's strategy includes public cooperation to combat unnoticed instances of online abuse.

Looking ahead, the PNP plans to further its efforts by enhancing coordination with governmental bodies and communities to effectively curb child exploitation online. As the situation evolves, maintaining public awareness and vigilance will be crucial in shielding children from potential harm, reported Manila Bulletin.
