Myanmar’s NUG Faces Staff Revolt

Myanmar’s National Unity Government (NUG) is under pressure after staff accused it of ignoring corruption complaints against senior officials.

The controversy centres on Daw Kyi Pyar, Permanent Secretary at the Prime Minister’s Office, and her husband U Nyi Nyi Min, a finance officer. Twelve former staff members lodged a complaint last November, alleging corruption and abuse of power.

A five‑member panel investigated for nearly three months before ruling last week that no evidence of graft had been found. Financial records and audits were deemed clean, and Kyi Pyar was reinstated with only a warning to treat staff more politely.

The decision has sparked anger among complainants, who insist they provided proof of wrongdoing. They accuse the NUG of lacking accountability and transparency, saying the ruling undermines trust in the civilian government.

The backlash has spread beyond the Prime Minister’s Office. Staff from the NUG’s Ministry of Education have gone on strike during university admissions, declaring solidarity with the complainants. They are demanding that the investigation’s findings be made public and that an independent reinvestigation be allowed.

Civil Disobedience Movement networks, including Myanmar Nway Oo University, have joined calls for fairness and transparency. Meanwhile, Kyi Pyar has dismissed the allegations as “personal attacks” and filed counter‑complaints that led to the suspension of four NUG staff members.

The dispute highlights tensions within the NUG, which operates as Myanmar’s parallel civilian government in opposition to the military junta. For many supporters, the case raises uncomfortable questions about how the NUG handles internal accountability at a time when it seeks international legitimacy.

These days Thais prefer to release information online to push the police to investigate properly. I have a feeling that that method could prove fatal in Myanmar.
