Why Britain beats America at comedy

John Cleese didn't say that councils are banning dogs to appese Muslims though

Ah great, a bit of early morning pedantry.

John Cleese reposted a claim that UK councils are considering adding dog free areas because Muslims don't like them. The claim is fake, it is just fear mongering to create division. He reposted it adding a snarky comment about having "Islam free zones".

There, better? Doesn't change anything other than satisfying your penchant for pointless pedantry.

  • Not anymore. Humor in the UK is now outlawed. Iconic comedians now fear prison. https://www.express.co.uk/celebrity-news/2172006/john-cleese-worried-Labour-govt-terrorist

Fact check - absolute blocks. Do you know anything about British comedy? You are exposing yourself as an ignoramus who clearly has no clue what happens in the UK.

Jeez, Express and GB "News" links. John Cleese was a brilliant comic and writer back in the day. Sadly now he is a washed up racist conspiracy theorist and has been caught out numerous times forwardi

Don't suppose our Cleese hater will appreciate this classic 70s sketch.

Brits are indeed very funny.

Just be prepared to be arrested for a hate crime once the set has finished.

No, he would have told you to eff off.

I don't hate John Cleese. As I said I think he was a brilliant comic writer and performer. It's just a shame what he has become - a fake anti-Islam conspiracy spreader.

And your clip is hardly hilarious. It doesn't offend me though if that's what you were hoping for.

To the title, don't know about beats Yank comedy, comedians.

But USA has freedom of speech, so wider range of comedy topics. I can only name a few Brit comedians, unlike long list of Yank comedians I know, and enjoyed, whether stand up or from movies.

Not the same with other genres of entertainment, and multi national folks that I enjoy watching or listening to.

Comes to comedy, Brits don't come to mind, for whatever reason, ignorance and or exposure to, included.

What a ridiculous thing to say. We have free speech too, and I dare say British comedy is way more risque than American comedy.

I have an excellent sense of humour. I just don't tolerate racist conspiracy theories being perpetuated, especially ones that are completely untrue. What's funny about spreading ignorant hate exactly? Have you ever looked at Cleese's twitter feed?

NO, because Twitter does not exist any more.

Just now, wil iam not said:

Great, another pedant. Thanks for your contribution.

Free speech ... really. Tell the holocausts deniers that ...

... "AI Overview

Denying the Holocaust in the UK is generally considered highly offensive and often antisemitic, but it is not a specific, standalone crime. Instead, it is typically prosecuted under broader laws regarding hate speech, public order, or harassment, such as the Communications Act 2003"

Or try displaying Nazi swastika, or Nazi salute in public, and some idiot will state being offended, making it a crime.

Anything someone else considers offensive, can be considered a crime. That's not free speech or expression. That's censorship

Humor can be timeless, but the funniest comedy is often the most current. I think that’s where some more sensitive souls start to fall off. The stand-up scene in the USA is one of the strongest in the world. It’s not just white European Americans — the rich mix of different ethnic backgrounds contributes to a much broader and more diverse pool of comedians, which strengthens the scene overall.

Sigh. What utter drivel. Try yelling "Fire" in a theatre in the US. And finally I guess to post some random AI in a response to the forum's greatest copier and paster of AI.

And I can copy and paste loads more AI drivel too - just like you! Seems like censorship to me.

So you have no answer to anything I said or any of the points I made. Your only point is that Twitter is now called X, like that changes the meaning of anything I said.

Again, thank you for your meaningful contribution.

Wow, you cherry picked the one example, that would cause physical harm to people affected by falsely yelling fire.

Try standing on the corner in UK yelling you hate Muslims, or Jews, with a nazi swastikas shirt or flag. See if you aren't arrested. Free speech / expression ... cheesy

Arrested & jailed, for a tweet ... cheesy

In 2012 Liam Stacey, a student who was jailed for 56 days for tweeting "grossly offensive" racist remarks about footballer Fabrice Muamba.

Ok, thank you for another fantastic contribution. So John Cleese is not a an anti-Islamic spreader of fake division causing and fear mongering rubbish........because in that one example he replied to a post instead of retweeting it (or should that be re-xing it to keep our other pedant happy)?

Ignore the whole point of the post and argue over semantics, brilliant.

I am terribly sorry you are no longer allowed to stand on a corner in the UK yelling you hate Muslims, or Jews, with a nazi swastikas shirt or flag.

I can see why you are so upset. It must be devasting for you.

Deflect much. Nothing against Muslims or Jews, though wouldn't want to live under their politics or social ideas.

Back to the 1000's arrested in the UK for expressing their opinion. Any thoughts on that, or you simply done deflecting and moved on to someone else's free thinking post.

My current favorite American comedians are Trae Crowder, Josh Johnson and Iliza Shlesinger. British comedians, Kevin Bridges, Steve Coogan, Jonathan Pie.

There’s loads of good comedians around, and no they aren’t at risk of losing their liberty.

What do you wanna medal?

When trying to defend your version of freedom of speach, maybe don't say 'Try standing on the corner in UK yelling you hate Muslims, or Jews, with a nazi swastikas shirt or flag.' like this is something that should be ok.

Don't think you'll get too many supporters with that little scenario (apart of course from the usual suspects on AN)

The UK does beat the USA for comedy hands down. Problem with the US comedy, and it is only my opinion, they try to make things far too political.

Politics and politicians are absolutely a fitting target of comedy.

That's the whole point of freedom of speech / expression. Being allowed to say, what other may not agree with. UK law, dictates what is offensive, or if someone says they are offended, then just on that fact, it might be in violation of the law.

That's not freedom, that's censorship.

Us Yanks, will never agree with what everyone states, thinks, expresses. But we tend to agree, you're allowed to state, think or express those thoughts. If you offend someone, oh well. As long as it's not libel or slander, it's not illegal.

I would pay well to see George Carlin come back and talk about Trump now.

I believe that on both sides of the Atlantic there is an understanding that ridiculous claims don’t further an argument.

Utter nonsense.

Ooh yes.

Or Joan Rivers on Trump, and the cuck Stephen Miller.
