Race row in Nottingham killer decision

Valdo Calocane

A bombshell claim rocked the opening of the Nottingham attacks inquiry: Valdo Calocane was not sectioned in 2020 after experts weighed research into the over-representation of young black men in custody.

The public hearing was told mental health professionals decided against detaining the future triple killer despite a violent outburst that saw police called to his student accommodation. Instead, they opted for community treatment.

Calocane, who has paranoid schizophrenia, went on to fatally stab 19-year-old students Barnaby Webber and Grace O’Malley-Kumar, and 65-year-old caretaker Ian Coates on 13 June 2023. He also seriously injured three others in the horrifying spree.

In January 2024, he was handed an indefinite hospital order after admitting three counts of manslaughter on the grounds of diminished responsibility and three counts of attempted murder.

Now a public inquiry has begun examining the “events, acts and omissions” that left him free before the killings — and what must change to stop it happening again.

On the first day, counsel to the inquiry Rachel Langdale KC laid out the timeline in stark detail. On 24 May 2020, Calocane was arrested after “repeatedly kicking and punching” a door in his student accommodation. A neighbour had to restrain him before officers arrived.

At a mental health assessment, Calocane reported hearing voices. Doctors concluded he was experiencing a first episode of psychosis, attributed to sleep deprivation and exam stress while he was studying at the University of Nottingham.

One doctor was “leaning towards” sectioning him, Langdale said, because it was his first presentation of psychosis and little was known about his risk history.

But the team also considered research into racial disparities in detention. They decided the crisis team could offer a “safe and reasonable alternative”.

Calocane agreed to medication and home treatment, including twice-daily visits. It did not last.

Soon after his release, he repeatedly kicked another neighbour’s door. She was so terrified she jumped from a first-floor window, suffering serious spinal injuries.

Calocane was arrested again and sectioned for about three weeks — the first of four hospital admissions before the 2023 attacks.

A later Care Quality Commission report into his treatment between May 2020 and September 2022 found a “series of errors,

omissions and misjudgements”.Without action, it warned, the issues would “continue to pose an inherent risk to patient and public safety”.

Despite concerns from his mother that he was being released too soon, Calocane was first discharged on 17 June 2020.

Less than a month later, on 13 July, he forced his way into a property and assaulted someone. He was sectioned again.

The inquiry also heard he stopped taking his medication just two weeks after his first discharge — and repeatedly misled professionals about his mental health and compliance.

In another alarming episode, on 31 May 2021, Calocane visited MI5 claiming he had information about a case and asked to be arrested. Two days earlier, his mother had warned the crisis team he was not taking his medication.

In a joint statement, the victims’ families said they had faced “failure and silence” for too long. They want the inquiry to expose “systemic neglect” and missed opportunities by mental health services, law enforcement and the justice system.

The hearings continue.

Key Takeaways

  • Doctors weighed racial disparity research before deciding not to section Calocane in 2020.

  • He went on to kill three people and seriously injure three more in June 2023.

  • A watchdog found “errors, omissions and misjudgements” in his care before the attacks.

Nothing new.

Security guards ignored the Manchester bomber for fear of being called racist.

The police ignored the Pakistani rape gangs for fear of being called racist.

Now this guy not sectioned because of race.

All while Labour were planning to change sentencing guidelines so the right to a pre sentencing report was based partly on race (and religion), and pushing DEI initiatives to discriminate against white people under the guise of "positive" discrimination.

The "anti-racists" are the most racist of them all.

I always wonder why a defence of young black males are over represented in jail is used. Perhaps if they stopped committing crime at an unrepresentative rate the statistics may be more balanced.

Rarely hear white men shouldn't be locked up as they are over represented compared to white women!

What a load of nonsense -

Here are the 'terrified' mothers-

  1. Lucy Connolly, a mother of one was sentenced to 31 months in prison for a social media post that called for people to "set fire" to hotels housing asylum seekers.

  2. Donna Conniff: A mother of six was sentenced to two years in prison for violent disorder. CCTV and video footage showed her throwing a brick at police officers and handing a brick to a juvenile to throw.

  3. Megan Davison: A 24-year-old mother of two was sentenced to 20 months for violent disorder. She was filmed jumping on the roof of a parked car and was described as being under the influence of a "cocktail of drugs" during the unrest.

  4. Amanda Walton: A 52-year-old grandmother (mother to Megan Davison) was sentenced to 22 months for throwing a missile and damaging property while walking the family dog during the riots.

Terrified , indeed!

No it isn’t.

Just like when I’ve interviewed veterans under the policy of positively discriminating in favor of their application being given a fair reading.

Candidates still have to qualify.

They just don’t get rejected out of hand on the basis of negative generalizations.

This case, like the Rochdale grooming scandal, is a salutary lesson for the authorities to focus on the crime regardless of political issues.

Fascists/fans of despotic authoritarian regimes will always come up with lame excuses like this.

Putin fans will "fact check" people that talk about Navalnys death. Oh, AKTUALLY, he died from pneumonia because he forgot to dry his hair properly after showering. We did all we could, but, well you know, it is cold out in the Siberian winter...

Exactly the same as the above reply. Conolly and others were political prisoners, daft enough to smash Sir Kiers Welsh choirboy narrative, nothing more nothing less, and boy did they pay a hefty price for bringing a dose of reality to the lefts false narratives. Sir Tommy of Luton getting banged up left right and center is exactly the same. Political prisoners of a vile despotic regime with the popularity of genital warts(although you would think otherwise reading his fanboys gushing here)

You have no idea what you are talking about, really. "Political prisoners". Get over yourself.

Lucy Connolly pleaded guilty to inciting racial hatred by publishing and distributing “threatening or abusive” written material on X. It is punishable by up to seven years. She got two years four months and was released after serving 40%.

She. Pleaded. Guilty.

"Sir Tommy of Luton" has been banged up for criminal offences such as mortgage fraud, for kicking a policeman in the head who was trying to stop him attacking his girlfriend, for using a false passport to try to enter the US, harassment causing fear of violence, contempt of court (twice), imperiling the course of justice.

He is not a political prisoner. He's a racist thug, a violent attacker of women, a drug addict, a fraudster.

Donna Conniff was caught on CCTV throwing a brick at a police officer. She was not a political prisoner, she threw a fricking brick at a policeman!! That would get you shot in America! They shoot you to death there just for slowly driving away from a scene or for helping a lady who was violently pushed to the ground.

You are so brainwashed by whatever crazy source you are getting your information from that it is hardly worth rebutting it, it is comical. Would you care to share your source?

You'll be telling me Otto Warmbier was a spy next. Didn't he make a teary confession? SOP in despotic regimes "justice systems".

Jeez dude, I seriously hope you are trolling, but who knows? With waits on remand up to 5 years in Sir Kiers Britain its no surprise these political prisoners often plead guilty.

Sir Tommy is a TRUE hero. You lefties will never forgive him for bringing down the rape gangs coverup single handedly. See he's getting a proper heros welcome in the USA now where lots of people understand the evil he was up against in the UK.

Oh dear. You neglected to share your source again. "Tommy Robinson" had absolutely ZERO involvement in exposing grooming gangs. He didn't bring them down. He didn't expose them. He jumped on a bandwagon after the fact.

Sammy Woodhouse actually played a major role in exposing the Muslim grooming gangs. She was groomed by these gangs, abused, and actually helped bring it to light. She did actual brave stuff. You would think she would praise anyone who helped as she was abused herself and suffered immensely and did all she could to help bring them down, but funnily enough she said Yaxley-Lennon was jumping on the bandwagon and "taking credit for things he hadn't done." She said "he didn't expose it" and was being "disrespectful."

They were exposed in the mainstream media years before Yaxley-Lennon had ever heard of them.

And he himself admitted he deliberately sets out to portray himself as a victim (as it leads to more donations):

https://theconversation.com/tommy-robinson-the-martyr-how-the-far-right-builds-its-victim-narrative-98261

And don't forget his kiddly fiddling mates who he defended. He literally couldn't care less about rape victims, he only cares about muslims or brown people. Rapey white people he either doesn't comment on or he protects.

You've been duped by a conman and a fraudster.

I shared my sources, what are yours?

@JonnyF, as he posted earlier.

The current sentencing guidelines were sleepwalked through parliament by successive Tory administrations.

I am talking about the revised racist DEI guidelines that were published in 2025 under Labour and were forced to retract.

In case you weren't aware Labour's Lammy is widely credited as the "intellectual architect." of the racist guidelines.

2017 - Lammy Review - The guidelines were explicitly based on recommendations from Lammy’s 2017 independent review into racial disparity in the justice system. In that report, he argued that judges often lack a full understanding of the backgrounds of minority offenders and recommended greater use of pre sentencing reports to bridge this "background gap."

Here's how the whole debacle unfolded.

March 5, 2025: revised racist DEI guidelines were published that would have required judges to "normally" request a PSR for offenders from specific "cohorts," including those from ethnic, cultural, or faith minority backgrounds.

March 31, 2025: Racist DEI guidelines suspended just one day before they were due to take effect. It was ruled that Lammy's racist rules risked creating a system where outcomes were influenced by race or religion.

In case you were unaware Labour were in power in March 2025. Lammy is a senior Labour figure.

Nice try blaming the Tories though. 😄
