UK Government Gateway ...... can anyone still use it?

Featured Replies

Tried today,

Previously had to use a vpn, as they blocked access from overseas.

but they appear to have blocked VPNs

So I can't login any more.

Is it just me being stupid, can anyone else login?

Gets to the 6 digit security pin (HMRC app)

Then just says wrong PIN.

Just tried it on my laptop. No problem. Also tried on the HMRC app, also no problem. No VPN used.

  • I also had problems logging in so reset the HMRC app & then I seem to remember switched the 2FA method to something else before changing it back again. Both now work fine for me.

You don't need a UK address to create a Gov.uk One account. I was able to create an account last year without a UK address.

Just tried the HMRC app and can log in as normal using fingerprint. No VPN required.

I haven't tried to log in to the HMRC website since last May/June, so I tried just now. There is a change on the sign-in page, which now offers 3 options:

Government Gateway - Government One Log-in - Create new sign-in details.

I selected the first option with my existing user i/d and password and got the passcode to my Thai phone number as before, so nothing appears to have changed for existing users. I was relieved to see on the PAYE page that their forecast for my income and coding from April 2026 does not show any increase on my state retirement pension.

Thanks to everyone for participating,

Trying again today, and success .........

Was using my Thai phone with Thai SIM (and HMRC app) yesterday.

Which generated different numbers to my Brit phone with Brit SIM (and HMRC app) today.

Using my Brit phone, Brit SIM and HMRC app everything worked as normal and I could login again.

Tried that, said I need Passport or DL, chose passport as I don't have a Brit DL.

Next page said DL only ..... no idea why .... so no go.

Luckily my Gateway account now works.

I'm about to get my state pension shortly. The Government Gateway site lists the state pension projected based on current tax year rates but the physical statement sent in post detailing ongoing payments shows the increase post April 5th of 2026

For the time being it might. But, judging from the link provided by @howerde , it looks like fun and games big time are ahead for those of us with Govt Gateway accounts when we are eventually forced to migrate to GOV.UK One Login.

Today,Thursday11 June 2026, I am unable to log in to the UK Gov. Gateway after previously having no problems; I cannot remember the last login date but it may have been 6 months or so ago.

Today the problem is that I do not receive an access code, even though the web dialogue says that it has been sent to the correct phone number here in Thailand. This never happened before.

I cannot see any way on the Gateway site to overcome this problem.

Can anyone help please?

Wait a while, sometimes it takes time to arrive .

Check junk mail

Thanks Nick Carter - I waited for more than an hour. Nothing arrived in my inbox, junk, or anywhere.

For an OTP sent to a phone....?

I just checked my access and received a code pretty much instantaneously. However I use a UK sim for my OTPs so there may be an issue with a Thai number - I seem to remember there have been issues reported in the past so could be just a temporary glitch.

OTP is sent to the HMRC app on your phone with your registered SIM in.

You need to open the HMRC app.

How do you let HMRC know your postal address? I've moved countless times since the last one they had for me.

Your post prompted me to log in and I was able to do so quite normally, my (Thai) phone received the access code in seconds, so maybe there's some setting on your phone which has been disturbed and is blocking the code?

I'm quite grateful to you because I noticed a message on my account saying my self-assessment return is due for the year ended April 2026, with the usual warnings of penalties for non-submission by the due dates - this in spite of having submitted a request last September to cease submitting returns (because I no longer have anything except PAYE income) and received a letter confirming that I no longer needed to do so. I phoned up HMRC and a very helpful chap (once I'd got through) went through it all with me and assured me that he's fixed the system properly this time.

I also logged in today (to check my Tax Code) and at 1st I wasn't getting the OTP to the HMRC App, closed the APP & opened it again & it came up straight away. Wasn't using a VPN & was using the APP with my Thai Sim (though was connected to WIFI at the time).

As an aside the only options for the OTP was the HMRC App, have they removed the option to recieve one via SMS?

Edited by SamSpade

I use it fairly regularly and have no problems getting signed in. using my Laptop, with or without a VPN. any required OTP goes to my Thai number, again, no issues.

As mentioned in my earlier reply that is what I received. I don't have the app and access via web login on my pc.

Thanks, from @OJAS thread linked to above it seems they've changed it so you can't get an OTP via SMS if you have a non-UK mobile number registered...

You can no longer get a security code by text message if your phone number is registered outside the UK.

After seeing your post i thought i would try to log-in, had no issues using my Thai mobile number, just selected sign in to gateway account, it gave me the 2 thai numbers i registered, selected one, select continue, about five seconds later the OTP was sent.
