After seeing your post i thought i would try to log-in, had no issues using my Thai mobile number, just selected sign in to gateway account, it gave me the 2 thai numbers i registered, selected one, select continue, about five seconds later the OTP was sent.

I've just logged into my account & can't see where my mobile number is registered or any options to register one so maybe that's why I'm unable to add SMS as a way of getting the OTP

Just tried it on my laptop. No problem. Also tried on the HMRC app, also no problem. No VPN used.

  • I also had problems logging in so reset the HMRC app & then I seem to remember switched the 2FA method to something else before changing it back again. Both now work fine for me.

i access my Gateway account from my phone, using the HMRC app - works perfectly and don't need a VPN..

Many of us have multiple SIMs and Phones.

If you forget which phone and SIM to use and try to login on the wrong phone/SIM combination the HMRC app doesn't work.

Sorry I missed the deadline for editing the post...

After a lot of messing around because I'd clicked the "Remember me for 7 Days" option, I've managed to add my Thai Phone Number for SMS...

Had to log out of Gov Gateway, then log back in using an Incognito Window (didn't want to clear my Cache) & did not select the "Remember me for 7 Days" option...

"Profile & Settings" at the top

"Sign In Details - Change" towards the bottom

"Your Government Gateway Profile" towards the bottom

"How You Get Access Codes" on the left hand side

"Add Another Way of Getting Access Codes" bottom right hand side

I'm guessing Non-UK SMS will only be available until we're moved to the Gov.UK One site so we're going to be forced to use the HMRC APP, what I did discover whilst messing around is that choosing the "Authenticator app for smartphone or tablet" option is more reliable as the App generates an OTP on device rather than it being sent to the App/Phone.
