Special report - children learning English from native speakers

To see or download mini-video, go to http://www.thaisnews.com/news_detail.php?newsid=201762

With the National Children’s Day approaching this Saturday our special report today looks at some opportunities provided for children on the island. Today we particularly focus on the school located in the heart of the tourist area in Patong and Kalim. Let’s join our reporter there.

This is not a typical day for a normal Thai public school on the island of Phuket, as children aged between 6 – 12 years old or the primary level usually don’t have the privilege of learning English with native speakers not with lots of relevant materials.

This particular class at Ban Kalim school is having their English lesson with Kate Cope, the Director of Education for the Phuket Has Been Good to Us charity foundation.

The foundation was set up after the tsunami by long established expat restaurateur Tom MacNamara. It began with individual donations and welcomes any public donors.

Kate explained the main goal as providing quality relevant English lessons in local settings by volunteer foreign teachers for the students here. They see the importance of English for the future flow of young people growing up in the important tourism industry here; they want to help the students so that they can handle future careers with confidence to communicate in English.

While the director of the school appreciates the support from local expats efforts in caring for the childrens’ future, students themselves are happy to learn in a fun and more child-centered approach. Kate stressed that local relevant materials are excessively used as materials.

This is another good example of the generous gift of giving appropriate skills and local resources. Business people who contribute to their community, especially investing in the future workforce by starting in education, can in turn lead to fruitful and sustainable changes and development in local livelihoods.
