Necessity vs convenience, during the petrol 'shortage'

Featured Replies

Who amongst us, actually 'needs' a 4 wheeled vehicle, let alone, it has to be petrol driven. Myself, no, don't need any motorized transportation, as everything I need, is within a 15 minute city, via pedal bicycle or simply walking.

Wet / fresh market & 7-11 only 1.8 kms from house. Even a couple small food vendors / restaurants. Makro is 2.7 kms away. Downtown & surfside < 5 kms away.

First 2 year living here, I only had a MB, and did Big C runs, 15 kms away from house, although plenty of vendors, wet/fresh market closer. Along with occasional 2 daily R/T school runs 30+ kms X 2 = 70+ kms, later, even though having a car.

Actually never needed a car, again, first 2 years not owning a car and still got O&A via bus, train or plane. Phuket, Krung Thep, Chiang Mai, all by public trans while living at Udon Thani. Even hopped over to Vientiane via public trans.

Cars have always been a convenience. Though TBH, would not be happy without one. I could put a sidecart on the MB, to avoid rain & brutal sun, but I do need my O&A, and only a car works for that, we we go now.

Even using a car, we could easily get by on 10 kms a week, as all that's needed is a Makro run, maybe once a week or twice a month. I only go to the park every day with the dog, to give her paws a break, as the only place that has soft green grass, year round, and to sniff & mark some different turf.

Living in a metro area, and it's almost a waste of money to have a car, unless doing a few O&A yearly.
