Trump now finds himself in quite a pickle. To avoid electoral disaster at home, the prospect of massive destruction of infrastructure in the Gulf States has to be averted. So now he's backing down. But now that the Iranians have seen him backing down, what's to stop them from demanding that Israel cease the destruction too? If not, the Iranians can start to implement their threat. Which would create a split between Trump and Netanyahu. Netanyahu wouldn't have much choice but to acquiesce ultimately. Anyway, it will be interesting to see how this plays out. In some ways this bears similarity to the situation in Venezuela: a big difference between initial demands and ultimate outcome.
