Stupidity may be punished. Bowel cancer is an easily treatable disease if caught early. Horrible if you ignore the symptoms and leave it.

Get a best doctor, no local village and small town hospitals, go to a reputable large hospital and find the specialist who is doing them all the time.

Preparation:

Laxative solution to clean out your bowels. Some hospitals have you do this at home, some have you come in several hours in advance and do it there.

You may also be given special dietary instructions for the day prior. Varies with the hospital & doctor, but low fiber for a few days and clear liquids only the day before are typical.

During: little to no experience as you are usually put to sleep with IV sedation

After: nothing special; though some people find they pass a lot of gas in the initial hours. Due to tyhe sedation, shpould not plan on driving home yourself as may still be a bit groggy/spaced out.

Prices: depend on hospital (private vs government) and whether any polyps found, polyp removal and biopsy is additional to basic colonoscopy price. Nowadays, private hospitals in Bangkok are around 25-30k (not including any polyp removal and biopsy). There are periodic special packages with somewhat lower costs. Government hospitals usually under 10k. Recommended sources for the latter would be Chulalongkhorn going through their after hours clinic, or Chulabhorn Hospital.

https://kcmh.chulalongkornhospital.go.th/en/clinic/after-hours-clinics-and-premium-care-clinics-during-normal-operating-hours/

Is this for a routine screening, or a specific problem? As if the latter, choice of doctor (doctor, not hospital) is very important. Please indicate if so and I will recommend doctor.

Like Sheryl said.

I had a colonoscopy-endoscopy done at Bumrungrud I think 5years ago. Price circa 30k.

Went in a few hours ahead and they put me in a room with a couple of jugs of laxative liquid. Drink-poop-drink-poop went on for a couple of hours and, in fact, a nurse came and took pics of

what was in the toilet till she was satisfied.

Best part was the propofol sleep the put me into for the procedure. I was under for not more than 40 mins. but woke up feeling like a million bucks, totally rejuvenated. Never ever had "sleep" that good. Now, I understand why Michael Jackson was hooked to the stuff.

Bottom line: Totally painless, except for the nuisance of cleaning out the bowels.

Hi Sheryl,

Medical check-up showed blood in my stool, next week the 8th I've a GP consult at my appointed SSO Sikarin hospital (Lasalle Rd, Bang Na). Personally I don't have any problems, all normal, no pain whatsoever...I feel great.

You won't necessarily feel bad because of polyps whether malignant or not in your lower intestinal tract.

Check the promotional pages of major private hospitals. They frequently offer special deals on endoscopy and colonoscopy procedures, often valid for a limited time

At my age, I would prefer to forego the hassle.

I am OK with dying of colon cancer.

For me, it's more concerning to work on the front end of my alimentary canal...my teeth.

I prefer to spend my money on my teeth, rather than my bowel.

One simply cannot think of everything, due to limited time and resources.

Dwelling too much on my colon might distract me from my dental restoration program.

Most importantly: My GF cares more about my teeth than she does about my hind quarter.

Blood in stool, with no other symptom, is a common early sign of colon cancer.

It can also have other causes e.g .hemorrhoids, diverticulosis etc.

Definitely needs to br investigated.

Should be possible to have colonoscopy at your SS hospital at no cost. But if you encounter problems let me know.

Or if you don't mind paying about 25k out of pocket, this is the best colon specialist in the country:

https://www.bumrungrad.com/en/doctors/chucheep-sahakitrungruang

He is also at Bangkok Christian Hospital once a week.

https://www.bch.in.th/find-doctor/72

BCH costs less. Both hospitals currently have colonoscopy packages, 22K at BCH and 25K at Bumrungrad.

Go to the best.

My friend up country went to our local hospital for a new special price colonoscopy. Perforated his bowl, sent him home, all infected, major operation, nearly died, then got blood clot on lungs.

I went to the doctor because I had blood in my stools.

I chose to visit a clinic where I got to see a qualified surgeon.

I was told "no problem"

Next visit I was told "heamorhoids"

Next visit I was told "food poisining"

When I told him I doubted his diagnosis he did a scan and said "no problem"

I knew something was wrong so I went for a stool test and gave him the results.

Three days later the same doctor removed a colon cancer. It was 19cm long.

Yes, 19cm. Think about that for a minute. Seven and half inches.

My advise is find a doctor who knows how to do his job.

I had to have chemotherapy but naturally I changed to a proper oncologist.

I hope you don't need chemotherapy (it is purgatory) so ignore the cost and get the best doctor you can find.

OH dear. I live up country as well and my colectomy scar went septic which delayed my chemotherapy.

Which province was this?

OK not the same doctor then. I live about 500kms away from you.

Just goes to show how careful you must be when choosing your doctor.

I use a famous hospital group but the standard of doctors does vary greatly.

I was fortunate to find a professional oncologist with 11 years experience working in USA.

Trouble is I have to drive 420 kms, round trip, to visit her but it is well worth it.

12k all in at public hospital in Bangkok. Honestly, having a Hoover shoved up your butt is not so agonising. I elected not to be put out, though they did did me Ativan.

If you have polyps which may or may not be cancerous, the rig clips them off to go to the lab. I only had a watermelon seed. It's pretty interesting to watch the video in real-time so you can ask questions.

You should also have a sigmoidoscopy (down the throat) at the same time. That needs you to be out because of the gad reflex.

Whatever that laxative is, you don't want to be far from a toilet for three days before the procedure. Better than those touted detox scams!

Evidently, I was not completely cleaned out so I had to take more at the hospital.

Seriously, nothing to worry about, even if you're squeamish. The consequences of not doing it could be catastrophic.

Sigmoidoscopy is a minimally invasive procedure used to examine the lower part of the large intestine, specifically the rectum and sigmoid colon,

I suggest what you are describing is an endoscope.

Sorry, my mind must have slipped a gear. Yes, endoscopy.

The only bad experience I’ve had with a colonoscopy was when they used the wrong anaesthetic, which left me barely able to remember what happened, the drug was Dormicum, to which I turned out to be allergic.

Forewarned is forearmed.

When I had mine. After a lot of probing, the doctor walked out. The nurse passed him on the way in and said to me 'Who was that?"😉

Rayong hospital next week first time. Scan showed cyst on colon. I'm afraid of any procedures.

Don't be so sure! Many of these doctors that carry out these internal exams seem to travel all over the provinces carrying out their trade. I had to have an endoscopy a while back but had to wait almost two weeks as the "specialist" was out and about endoscoping half of Thailand.

Like another mentioned, early diagnosis of gastro problems means you can get rid of them easier. It's one of your most important systems and one many don't take care of. I myself took 68 years to have my first colonoscopy and upper endoscopy because of a H Pylori infection, and I shouldn't have waited near that long. Luckily I had no polyps but I did have stomach inflammation from the H Pylori, which a year later I'm still trying to get right, even though I ate healthy all my life.Try not to worry as most cysts are benign, and can be removed if they aren't.

I've done about 8 endoscopies due to Barrett's. Only sedation for the first one. Just a bit of discomfort. No waiting for hours after for the sedation to wear off.

I hear you, I am the same way but always better to confront these things sooner than later. Best of luck.

The doctor warned me that the procedure could cause an erection. During the inspection, he said, " Oh, oh. We have an erection!" I said, "I haven't got an erection." He said, " I was talking about me.!"😉
