Is it time to start "prepping" ?

Featured Replies

So, according to the headlines today Thailand has 60 days fuel left!

This will undoubtedly mean that it wont be long before stock deliveries to stores start being affected.

May be common household supplies will start to become fewer on the shelves? Deliveries no longer possible. I see Japan had a run on ttoilet tissue of all things.

How long before this starts to bite the average household?

Is it time to start prepping? stock up on bottled water, sacks of rice, stock up the freezer ?

Thoughts ?

Water?

I buy 120 Liters of water, at a time, from that company Glacier.

I am very satisfied with the service, and I think the quality is adequate for my purposes.

I doubt that the Iran War will interrupt my Glacier Water Delivery, although the price might conceivably go up by 10 or 20 percent, which would not be a hardship for me.

But, what about beer?

Beer is not really a necessity, either, whatsoever.

So what is it that I might stockpile?

a. I now have 200 cans of Tops Tuna in my closet. That will last a couple of months, for sure.

b. You are correct: I need to stock up on rice. I can buy 60Kgs of Jasmine rice and store in the bottom drawers of my refrigerators, to keep it fresh.

c. I guess I can buy 40 Kgs of frozen chicken breast meat. But, sooner or later, that has to run out, sometime.

Even if I were to double my monthly food expenditures, I would still be fine with that.

The only thing bothering me, a bit, this niggling thing in the back of my mind is loss of electricity during some sort of EMP attack.

If I were to lose power, then there goes my 3 ACs which I try to keep at full blast during the Hot Season.

Or, I can just use one large AC in my bedroom, I guess.

So, in conclusion:

So far so good.

But we cannot predict the future.

Did all that at the start of covid but me er amounted any supply issues, be the same unless it's imported

Rice from the family land in tons.

Water always for two weeks or so.

Worst case: drink filtrated water from the 5 gallon tanks (used for coffee and cooking anyway).

Just electricity needed to produce.

What's toilet roll 😁

Could stock in kitchen paper rolls.

Won't tell how much cash we have stocked up 😊

If you're just starting, you're late.

My thought is that these dramatic predictions never come to fruition. 60 days in all likelihood means 6 months and that is if the world doesn't adjust to the existing challenges.

I'm prepping to leave. Will be gone for a few months and off before the Songkran squirting and 40+ degree weather starts. Will be in much nicer environs and where there are unlikely to be shortages.

Which reminds me, need to grab an IBC for me pickup and fill it with water.

Wife already stocked up with cooking oil and an extra tank of cooking gas. We already have 2 years of rice stored, a small garden, lots of fruit, and banana trees. A short walk into town if it comes to that. I am not the worrying kind so I let my wife do that.

I had cut down an old Tamarin tree last week. The locals came and cut up the smaller branches into 12 in. lengths, and carted the larger pieces away to make charcoal. They seem to be a bit worried. The Saturday market has fewer sellers due to the price and unavailability of fuel.

I have basically all software and hardware to build or run anything and to build again for spare parts. From music to AI models to whatever you can imagine in terms of books and knowledge or technology too. -- They are not getting us back to the stone age as long my stuff exists.

I have over 1000+ chips and things from wifi chips to lidar sensors. As well a entire new Internet that runs on bluetooth mesthatic network. For data, text and voice.

As of having plenty of solar and batteries there is no issue to make infinite cooking gas using just electrolysis. Food grows all year round fast enough, have a supply over 3 locations with essentials like cooking oils, medicine, seeds, medical equipment, survival equipment and more. I did all this since covid and actually made it redundant over a few storage units / countries. Actually paying 150 a month in rent for it.

I have the full clothe set thais often wear to hide from the sun, a similar honda bike and psychical build too. You would not even know its a farang on a bike.

Obviously just doing all this at home is senseless, if it gets out of hand for real, its not like covid but also violence and thieves. Specially as a foreigner here during such times.

Then since i got all that done i focused on skills, i can now do anything from wood work, farming, plumbing, electrical work, soldering, diving etc etc etc. -- Being useful keeps one alive too.

Then since recent escalations i now ordered sattelite internet as well. Guess i'll be fine on our 150,000+ sqm land.

Wow, looks like being prepared for something that might happen is a full-time hobby of yours.

I "prepped" the day after the bombing started. You could see this coming a mile away.

Are you flying back to Venus?

Covid was a mild warning, and made my decision to move out and build an farm.

Have you ever noticed how people who leave things to the last minute are always in a lather of anxiety, whereas fussbudgets sail serenely on?

No need to prep for anything. No shortage of food anywhere. Thais get fatter each year.

As I said in my post, " I am not a worrier," I remember the year 2000 panic, when a lot of my friends " were in a lather" filled their spare bedrooms with food and water, took their money out of the bank, and buried it in the backyard. There is nothing wrong with being prepared, but there are limits and the fact that there is always something you didn't prepare for, like a small nuke, or the starving masses wanting what you have.

We are fine at our Thai house with family and the farm.We also have a stand alone functioning off grid property in the states if nessary…..Personally I hope it doesn’t come to that.Kinda like the civilized life.

Most McDonald's are open 24/7 now.

I'm always prepping some, often having power cuts and furthermore living on an island, which is depending of goods coming in by ferry. I.e., I'm always having drinking water and food for 3+ days. However, Thailand don't seem to face war like in Europe, where some countries have almost demanded pople to prep for three days survival with no power, no tap-water and no communication. Reports about the actual fuel situation varries, 60 days to 100 days. Panic prepping of fuel worsen the situation instead of acting normal. The situation might be cleared in a month – very difficult to predict what's going on in the orange man's mind – or some deals made, like Anutin's statement about a deal with tank ship-passage when heading for Thailand. I won't worry too much at the moment, not worth spending time on that.

Having solar installed next week.

I think regular business deliveries will continue due to government rationing. (As I keep saying, I expect fuel supplies to be restricted to Thai citizens with proof of vehicle ownership and driver's license.) Otherwise, as far as food goes, Thailand is fairly self sufficient. I don't see any problems, except for people who buy imports. It's been years since I have bought anything grown, processed, or made outside of Thailand. I don't think things will change from that standpoint. Western luxuries might go. And there might be electricity rationing and brownouts. I'd hate to be living on the 30th floor of some condo in a glassed in cage.
