April 6Apr 6 Popular Post The White House is mounting a last-minute push to keep Hungary’s long-time strongman in power.U.S. Vice President JD Vance is due to land in Budapest on Tuesday for a high-stakes visit designed to bolster Prime Minister Viktor Orbán ahead of a knife-edge national election on April 12.The intervention signals how far Donald Trump is willing to go to defend his closest political ally inside the European Union as Orbán’s 16-year rule comes under unprecedented pressure.Orbán’s Grip Weakens as Challenger SurgesPolls suggest the ruling Fidesz government is facing its toughest fight in more than a decade.Anti-corruption campaigner Péter Magyar has surged in popularity, pitching himself as the candidate capable of ending what critics call an entrenched political machine in Budapest.Orbán, architect of what he calls an “illiberal democracy”, has long clashed with Brussels over migration, rule-of-law disputes and ties with Moscow. Now the political fight has spilled beyond Hungary’s borders.Washington Steps Directly Into the CampaignDuring his two-day visit, Vance will hold talks with Orbán before delivering a public speech — a move that effectively places Washington inside the final stretch of a heated election race.Hungarian government spokesman Zoltán Kovács described the trip as proof of the “strong and enduring alliance” between the two countries. But the symbolism is unmistakable: the Trump administration is signalling that Orbán is not just another European partner, but a political model it wants preserved.‘Golden Age’ Alliance — But With Strings?Relations between Washington and Budapest have tightened sharply since Trump returned to office.U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio declared a “golden age” in bilateral ties earlier this year, underscoring Hungary’s growing strategic value as relations between the U.S. and other European capitals fray.Opposition leaders, however, warn the support could come at a cost.Magyar has hinted that undisclosed military or strategic concessions may lie behind the political backing, warning that “both Eastern and Western aid have a price”.Russia Shadow Deepens Election TensionsThe row is intensifying amid fresh scrutiny of Budapest’s links to Moscow.Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó confirmed he has maintained contacts with Russian officials even as EU ministers debate new sanctions against Kremlin allies.Reports suggest Hungary has pushed to soften measures targeting Russian elites and oil shipments — fuelling claims that the country is acting as Moscow’s most reliable voice inside the EU.With days to go before voters head to the polls, Hungary’s election has become more than a domestic contest. It is fast turning into a geopolitical showdown over the future direction of Europe.Operation Save Orbán: Trump deploys Vance to Hungary – POLITICO

April 6Apr 6 Seems like Vance has been sent on a mission of irrelevancy. In the grand global scheme of things, with everything going on, does Victor Orban even matter. Hungary is, ordinarily, a fairly unimportant European economy. Based on average income, Hungary is in the bottom 3.

Good to see there are plans to change that rule to majority only.

April 6Apr 6 Popular Post Orban's legacy! 😆QuoteIn 2025, Hungary was once again ranked at the bottom of the European Union, sharing last place with Bulgaria this time, according to the annual Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI) compiled by the Secretariat of Transparency International in Berlin. Compared to its 2024 result, Hungary lost one point and fell from 82nd to 84th place in the global ranking, with a score of 40 points. This is the worst score and the lowest ranking Hungary has ever recorded in the CPI. The poor result reflects the continued failure to remedy rule of law deficiencies and to curb systemic corruption, according to the report by Transparency International Hungary, presented together with the CPI results in Budapest on the 10th of February. Systemic corruption, manifested in the organized theft of public funds, is the main reason behind the country’s now persistent economic decline.Hungary Remains the Most Corrupt Member State of the European Union for the Fourth Consecutive Yearhttps://transparency.hu/en/news/cpi-2025-results-annual-report/

Good to see there are plans to change that rule to majority only. How is it the business of the American Vice President or the US Government whether or not the EU funds Ukraine? I know about unanimous voting in the EU, versus QMV (not majority voting, as you erroneously imply). My poin was rhetorical. It doesn't matter to the US whether or not the EU supports Ukraine. Vance has previously signaled an enthusiasm to interfere in the private affairs of other states. But in reality, he is now an irrelevance in the Administration. He cannot be sacked. He doesn't support the action in the Middle East. But if he is not in the US, he cannot build the support he needs for a 25th Amendment vote.
April 6Apr 6 Author If I remember right, back in October 2024 the Republicans kicked up a fuss accusing the UK Labour Party of interference in the US election, claiming some party members went to key states to campaign for Harris. Now Vance is doing the same thing in Hungary.

Totally agree with you for once. But Europeans got disarmed before the population replacement/mass importation of young uneducated & needy male muslim migrants scheme kicked off, otherwise they wouldn't have lost their continent like this. Definitely a lesson there regarding the 2nd ammendment.

Definitely a lesson there regarding the 2nd ammendment. At the moment approx 6-8.4% of Europe's population is Muslim with projections it could reach 7.4-11.2% by 2050, 24 years away. Now all these single Muslim men you seem terrified of, roaming the streets, attacking all and sundry, are going to have a problem finding wives as the boat migrants are nearly all single men. So sadly, they will die out as time goes by. The legal migrants, working away producing offspring who, in the case of Indians in particular, end up in skilled professions, will flourish as they have done the last 25 years.
April 7Apr 7 Haven't there been virulent complaints against interference in foreign elections before this?Actually, JD left because Petey didn't invite him to the Pentagon prayer breakfast. It was only for Protestants.
April 7Apr 7 Is it really a mission to assist salvation or destruction given the current general alienation of EU perceptions of the US ?Perhaps Vance is making closed door promises he also can't keep ?
