The White House is mounting a last-minute push to keep Hungary’s long-time strongman in power.

U.S. Vice President JD Vance is due to land in Budapest on Tuesday for a high-stakes visit designed to bolster Prime Minister Viktor Orbán ahead of a knife-edge national election on April 12.

The intervention signals how far Donald Trump is willing to go to defend his closest political ally inside the European Union as Orbán’s 16-year rule comes under unprecedented pressure.

Orbán’s Grip Weakens as Challenger Surges

Polls suggest the ruling Fidesz government is facing its toughest fight in more than a decade.

Anti-corruption campaigner Péter Magyar has surged in popularity, pitching himself as the candidate capable of ending what critics call an entrenched political machine in Budapest.

Orbán, architect of what he calls an “illiberal democracy”, has long clashed with Brussels over migration, rule-of-law disputes and ties with Moscow. Now the political fight has spilled beyond Hungary’s borders.

Washington Steps Directly Into the Campaign

During his two-day visit, Vance will hold talks with Orbán before delivering a public speech — a move that effectively places Washington inside the final stretch of a heated election race.

Hungarian government spokesman Zoltán Kovács described the trip as proof of the “strong and enduring alliance” between the two countries.

But the symbolism is unmistakable: the Trump administration is signalling that Orbán is not just another European partner, but a political model it wants preserved.

‘Golden Age’ Alliance — But With Strings?

Relations between Washington and Budapest have tightened sharply since Trump returned to office.

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio declared a “golden age” in bilateral ties earlier this year, underscoring Hungary’s growing strategic value as relations between the U.S. and other European capitals fray.

Opposition leaders, however, warn the support could come at a cost.

Magyar has hinted that undisclosed military or strategic concessions may lie behind the political backing, warning that “both Eastern and Western aid have a price”.

Russia Shadow Deepens Election Tensions

The row is intensifying amid fresh scrutiny of Budapest’s links to Moscow.

Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó confirmed he has maintained contacts with Russian officials even as EU ministers debate new sanctions against Kremlin allies.

Reports suggest Hungary has pushed to soften measures targeting Russian elites and oil shipments — fuelling claims that the country is acting as Moscow’s most reliable voice inside the EU.

With days to go before voters head to the polls, Hungary’s election has become more than a domestic contest. It is fast turning into a geopolitical showdown over the future direction of Europe.

Unfortunately with the EU requiring a unanimous vote on many issues, Hungary has been holding up funds for Ukraine. Good to see there are plans to change that rule to majority only.

There are large gangs of young male people of a certain immigration & ideological background making life impossible for young women and law abiding folk generally. How is it the business of the American Vice President or the US Government whether or not the EU funds Ukraine? I know about unanimous voting in the EU, versus QMV (not majority voting, as you erroneously imply).

My poin was rhetorical. It doesn't matter to the US whether or not the EU supports Ukraine. Vance has previously signaled an enthusiasm to interfere in the private affairs of other states. But in reality, he is now an irrelevance in the Administration. He cannot be sacked. He doesn't support the action in the Middle East. But if he is not in the US, he cannot build the support he needs for a 25th Amendment vote.

If I remember right, back in October 2024 the Republicans kicked up a fuss accusing the UK Labour Party of interference in the US election, claiming some party members went to key states to campaign for Harris.

Now Vance is doing the same thing in Hungary.

At the moment approx 6-8.4% of Europe's population is Muslim with projections it could reach 7.4-11.2% by 2050, 24 years away.
