Their country, their customs. Idiots like the Op really should not be allowed in the country

  • Why? Stock up on supplies, stay home, ignore it. That's what many of us do. Anyway, do you realize how silly that sounds. It's like going to America and petitioning the government to stop July 4th. S

Normally delivered in 1-2 days, Songkran is delaying deliveries, get over it

Try Trump, this might give them the excuse to take over Thailand and kick out the thais.

Thailand doesn't have resources that the US can exploit.

That's harassment.

It's assault.

They should be fined and jailed.

100 guys ganging up on one guy with water pistols.

This "festival" is a free pass for people to act like thugs.

Too many people to have police everywhere.

Get to work with your contacts. Talk some sense into the mayor.

Skinny, bald and ugly too. Don't forget them.

Oh come on I am sure some of them have a full head of hair.

I stayed home for the last three years. This year I decided to go with the flow (so to speak), just on our local main road (Udomsuk).

I borrow a Chang ice bucket and dipped in ice water along the way. The old people and sellers I just did their hands. The little kids and I just drenched each other!

No powder out this way this year. (I have bad eyes.)

The most fun was watering the 14 cops on my way home. One of them pulled out his gun--very realistic, it even had a laser site. He pulled the trigger and got me good with water! Lots of fun!

Now I'm feeling bad I only did one day and about those missed days. NEVER AGAIN!

Get out there and have some fun, ya old curmudgeons.

My Samut Prakan friend tells me Phra Padaeng, the Chao Phraya island that's Bangkok's 'green lung' is the best for Songkran the following week.

Know what? I'm going to go. Where else can you find a full-scale wet t-shirt contest???

I'm always happy, unlike some of the grumpy old gits who post on here.

Thanks for asking.

I always plan an overseas trip around Songkran back to OZ .

Participated a few times with my Thai spouse when we first came to Thailand back in 2010. Seems like it wasn't so out-of-control then. A few times was enough and I'm in the been there done that, don't need to do it again group. During the festival we stay home or go somewhere else, and drive in our closed car to places like malls where we can park inside. My only wish was for the festival to be on the same days nationwide.

Wish you were here little one,!! Tis great to see the squirters are all over it again this year, try phoning Pauline or even Barnaby, they are both very good listeners to sob stories!

Georgie boy if I were you I would would go down to any one of the sois this afternoon and stand in the middle of the road and superglue your shoes to the road and hold up all the traffic with a large sign reading BAN SONGCRAN !!! That will definately work for sure.

Had a great water play for just 1-2 days down south on the island, all civilized, no throwing on every corner or when you just go to a 7/11, and back to normal today already too. Happy I don't live in one of these cockroach infested places.

Dead kids make you happy?? strange old man you are... empty heart too.

I think Thailand has lost its Culture to the cash paying Tourists. Remember what they have done to the beaches with their full moon party’s. I don’t think Thailand should have Tourist because they can’t behave themselves. If they come they should have to pay a premium, perhaps that would give you a better Quality Tourist and they should only be able to stay 30 days, No Border Runs. Thailand has enough money coming from the Expats that live here why destroy your own county just to bring in extra money but many problems too.

Full moon is on one island. Most of the trash on the sand is from Thais. 30 days is stupid. The bad ones stay 14 days. The good ones stay 2 months.

I'm seriously thinking about starting up some kind of petition worldwide to put an end to this Songkran madness

I watched Tiktok video today of a elderly Thai van driver being attacked by groups of young farangs with a high powered water pistols

This was Phuket about 15-20 farangs attacked him

They even opened all doors on his van as he was fighting them off and sprayed water inside

Does anyone have that video they could post , very very sad

Road deaths , hooligans, etc ,blindness , eye injury

We must stop this festival and if I have to do that I will, as the saying goes ,if it's to be it's up to me !!

I may have to go see my local Member of Parliament about this again to write to the Thai government to do something!!!

Go put your orange vest on get your pen and research bargirls.

First Thailand makes too much money to end it

Second if what you stared is true it should show up in news today

I hope they start a consultation Monday, split Pattaya Songkran into zones, Imbecile 1, 2, 3, for different levels of imbeciles. The rest remains dry and businesses make money

Here, I started the petition................. Those in favor of ending Songkran---Georgegeorgia + 3. Those in favor of keeping Songkran----71, 197,345 (foreigners and Thais included). Well, the fines for spraying water and powder were a good idea, although likely very few listened, even though I think that was only for Bangkok.

Driving with my girlfriend yesterday on her scooter, two threw buckets of water at us, and of course my being in the front, I took the brunt of it. On the way back from shopping with groceries, at least 8 were on the sides of the road but I asked them not to spray me and they didn't, so some do have respect for others here. As far as the OP, it's Thailand, they're New Year and their prerogative to have the holiday, so it might be best if you just stayed indoors those days. That is, if you're actually in Thailand now.

Its not only foreigners who are Songkran crazy . The local Thais under the influence of Low Cal etc are adept at using large water guns and show no mercy to anyone in their range . As we know Songkran is a religious and cultural event that brings families together after the rice harvest and to show respect to the elderly .

I would like to know how it has developed into these drunken water fights . I am betting on the foreigners started it . OK , it does attract many tourists and revenue to Thailand but opposing that are there are many ex-pats that leave the country to avoid the event , or stay in there homes , so not spending money to help the Thai gov; revenue and avoid using the roads that are being used by drunk or drugged drivers .

I am all for having good fun but when a person who wants nothing to do with it and is dressed in decent clothing gets splattered , that is wrong .

POV: Just stay home, if you don't wish to get wet – works fine for me, after I've tried the wet solution in full power – and let the Thais celebrate their New Year, their Thai way. If we Western foreigners don't apreciate the Thay way of New Year, none force us to stay put here, we are free to return to our grayscale home countries with no Water War in April – and back there you also don't need to follow the domestic news from Land-of-Smiles.

Here's a tip. Keep your car windows UP. Motorcycles you're going to get wet. Accept it. Make sure things that will get damaged by water are either protected or not taken.

Yup, wallet etc. ... you dry out quick in those temperatures anyway. And a bit of cool is welcome.

I was 'ambushed' by a bunch of Thais outside their massage places and shops on my way home last year. I had to pass them. They stood there laughing and waiting for me 555 ... I just accepted it and went through, getting soaked and whited and laughing with them and it was great fun for us all.

Of course GG is researching in Pattaya, where Songkran becomes truly tedious and boring at the latest after the third day (of 7 for chrissakes).

A Thai friend sent me a video of her neighborhood children washing their elders' hands with water outside their houses. Real cute and what the original tradition is all about.

Songkran, one of the most exciting times of the year, joining in with Thais, as they celebrate the start of the new year. Couldn't be a better time to get wet, the height of the hot season, I love it to bits.

Can't wait now for next years Songkran!!

We’ve had a very nice Songkran so far. Went to Nakhon Ratchasima. Went around the neighborhood and visited with neighbors, the old ‘aunties’ and ‘grandmas’. Visited with M-I-L. Poured water on the family’s Buddha statue. Poured water on M-I-L’s hands and feet. Had the same done to me by the younger ones. Sprinkled quite a bit of cash around to the children, students, and elderly in the village who could use a little extra coin this month. (And they appreciated it, which is always nice.)

Yes, I could do without the music blaring until 2 AM. We were on the 16th floor of a hotel and couldn’t get to sleep. Yes, I could do without some of the water throwing. We got stuck in a few water induced traffic jams. So what? Everyone was respectful of us and our car. Sanook.

If you don’t like Songkran, change your venue. Go hide in your luxury condo. Or get out of the cities and go experience it in more rural areas. Or travel abroad until the festival is over. After all, T.I.T. Truly.
