Europe moves to secure Hormuz without Trump

Britain and France are scrambling to build a multinational force to safeguard the Strait of Hormuz, as tensions with Donald Trump deepen and global energy flows hang in the balance. The effort marks a bold attempt to stabilise one of the world’s most critical shipping lanes — without Washington at the helm.

With up to a fifth of global oil supplies at risk, the stakes are immediate and severe.

A Coalition Born in Defiance

At the centre are Keir Starmer and Emmanuel Macron, who convened more than 50 countries to back a new “Coalition of the Willing”. Their message was blunt: freedom of navigation cannot be dictated by Tehran.

The move comes as Iran threatens steep transit tolls, while conflicting signals from Washington — declaring the crisis “over” even as tensions persist — have unsettled allies.

Washington Frozen Out — For Now

The US was notably absent from talks, reflecting a widening transatlantic rift. While some European leaders quietly argue US firepower is indispensable, others see exclusion as a chance to assert strategic independence.

Trump, meanwhile, has lashed out at NATO allies, insisting the US could secure the strait alone — even as it pressures Europe to act.

Blueprint for a Fragile Peace

The European plan is taking shape: minesweepers to clear hazards, warships to escort tankers, and a broad coalition to deter Iranian aggression. France has signalled readiness to deploy naval assets, while Germany could contribute surveillance aircraft and mine-clearing capabilities.

Asian powers, including India and Japan, are being courted — both to share the burden and to open diplomatic backchannels with Tehran.

Deterrence or Escalation?

The logic is simple: a multinational naval presence raises the cost of any attack. Striking one vessel risks dragging dozens of nations into conflict.

But the plan hinges on a critical unknown — what happens if Iran strikes anyway. Without a clear mandate for force, the coalition risks appearing strong but acting weak.

Cost, Capability and Credibility

Practical hurdles are mounting. Questions persist over whether European fleets — particularly Britain’s ageing minehunters — can sustain such an operation. Insurance markets, not warships, may ultimately decide if the strait is truly open.

For now, Europe is betting it can succeed where Washington has stumbled. If it fails, the consequences will ripple far beyond the Gulf.

The UK-France plan to fix Iran crisis without Donald Trump

I actually enjoy that US hegemony is toppling just when the Americans think that they have shown the world how "strong" they are; instead, everybody can see how morally corrupt (if not simply evil) the Americans are, and stupid on top of it.

Isn't it Donald trying to save face?

7 weeks after he started the war and the Strait is still closed.

Another 'special military operation' gone wrong.

France and UK sat on their ass. Did not help. America has plenty of oil. Europe needs it. It is a pathetic desperate face saving attempt by 2 pathetic leaders of 2 pathetic nations. America saved their ass in ww2. Should have let Germany have them both.

Trump started this war because Netanyahu persuaded him it would be a short, easy win like Venezuela. The idiot believed him and here we are, the world facing inflation and recession because Trump and his two 'diplomats', son in law and estate developer, can't make a deal out of a paper bag.

The world has had enough of Trump and his stupidity, not one nation has joined his mad war.

UK and France to the rescue! Here's a warm beer and a croissant destroyer to save the day.

So those other wars were fine?

Johnny come lately, that is the only way you can describe those European coalitions, but it's too late again, let's see what they can do now when the straits are closed again, will they fight to get them to open or turn around and go back home?

It should be ' you broke it, you fix it' but I'm not sure they've got the brains to do it.

America does not need oil. Europe can fix it.

I am eager to explore this impressive and meticulously crafted plan when Europe unveils it in 2030. Its potential to shape the future is truly exciting.

Didn't Trump ask them to come in before and they said no? Now Trump is enforcing a blockade to and from Iranian ports they say they're coming in. Bit like the "friend" that stands back from a fight and only comes in once the fight has been won.

Are you implying that the leaders of Europe are merely opportunistic, waiting to pounce on someone who is already defeated? That notion is quite troubling to me. In reality, Europe is strategically and thoughtfully planning its operations, demonstrating a level of sophistication and care that should not be dismissed.

A friend who sees his 'idiot friend' start a fight on his own that he was warned before he would not win.

But the idiot friend still went ahead proclaiming he was the greatest.

Of course nobody, literally nobody, went to help him when he got into trouble, served him right.

Then he started blubbing when he couldn't win, realising he had no friends. What a stupid boy!

Alas as it is militarily the fight is being comprehensively won by the US. The Strait is now pretty much the only card the Islamic terrorist regime has left and this is an economic rather than military card to hold. To deny this is to deny reality.

It's one hell of a card. The Iranians only need to put occasional holes in passing tankers and then there's no insurance forthcoming for commercial business.

The Americans won every battle in Vietnam apparently, but lost the war.

You are right. It is "one hell of a card" to hold and one that they shouldn't be allowed to hold. No country should be able to hold international waters hostage and to ransom. As for the Vietnam War it can be argued that politics played a very big role in the outcome there.

American has not used the big bombs yet. Iran food inflation is 90%. If they don't wake up out come the big bombs next to the waterway. Goodbye guys with guns.

So instead of helping the USA keep the straits open, they're thinking about 'keeping the straits open themselves'.

They can't even pay their agreed share to finance NATO, so who's going to pay for the deployment and support for months on end.

Is that before or after they run out of oil, or anything else they aren't buying from USA & RU already.

Even using everything NATO has available, it wouldn't match what the USA has there now. Good luck with that one.

Once again, someone echoing Trump's ignorance. America does have plenty of oil. Not nearly enough to make up for the shortfall. And without the Persian Gulf oil, it's very expensive. Far more than the popularly featured futures market prices. In the old days, there was a saying that "What's good for General Motors is good for the USA." The new MAGA litany is What's good for American OIl, is good for the USA" Somehow I don't think that most of American industry or American consumers are going to buy into that.

And while those big guns are booming, Iran will lay waste to infrastructure in the Persian gulf. What's the world economy going to look like in the face of a long term shortfall in fossil fuel production? Well, it should give further impetus to the already fast-paced development of renewable energy resources.

This will be entertaining. I can't wait to see the EU/UK flotilla of barely functioning ships sailing boldly into the maw of the Straits of Hormuz in order to show the cheeky Iranians "their place" in the world order.

Europe is COMPLETELY CLUELESS.

They need to rethink their strategy.

a. They must Stand Up and STOP Israel from bombing its neighbors, including ......EVERYBODY

b. They must STOP the US from shipping bombs and other weaponry to Israel. This might require a blockade, of some sort.

c. They must agree to pay a toll to transit the strait of Hormuz for the foreseeable future, up until the time when Iran has been rebuilt, completely, including all 12 universities destroyed by Israel, and all hospitals and schools.

This is the best way forward.

It's international waters. Why should anyone pay a toll?

is not 'international' waters!
