Yes I read the OP. The prices you were quoted seemed a bit excessive, that's all, hence my question.

Yes I agree that Toyota's quote was WAY too high. For the immediate fix by the local man, 5k seemed OK, not knowing what it should be. The actual clutch is probably Bht 1k on Ali or similar.

And most will rip you off and sell you things that were not needed. Also, many do a poor job. Hence the request for recommendations.

The dealer for your make/model is the best bet. They will have or be able to obtain the necessary parts if it's a clutch or bearing problem. And if it's a leak in the refrigerant they are more likely

Looks like a money pit.

Perhaps that is why your name is emptypockets?

Not at all, my money is invested, no need to keep it in my pockets. Or on a money pit of a run down British motor car.

Went to several air con shops who either did not know what they were doing, or did not want to get involved with a Farang with a Jaguar.

Finally ended up at Boy Air and Sound North of Pattaya. He was the first to have a circuit tester tool and ascertained the compressor clutch coil was burned out.

Two days later he said it was ready, so I went to pick it up.

  1. He replaced the coil and a fan sensor (the fan worked before.)

  2. It now has air, but not cold like before.

  3. Now the engine check light is on. (I guess he disturbed something? But he denies it.)

  4. He gave me a bill for 6200 Baht, which seems excessive when I check the cost of the parts elsewhere.

What does one do with this?

P.S. does anyone know a mechanic familiar with this model?

He probably over charged the system with coolant. Figure out what the specs are, buy yourself an a/c vacuum pump and recharge the system yourself, it’s a really easy task.

Could be anything from spark plug coil, fuel cap to a manifold sensor. Get yourself an OBD2 reader to figure out the problem is. Check engine light issues are an easy fix.
