Reform election earthquake leaves Starmer facing Labour revolt

Starmer pull face.jpg

Farage tears through Red Wall as pressure mounts on PM to quit

Keir Starmer was plunged into a full-scale political crisis overnight as Nigel Farage led a devastating Reform surge across Labour heartlands, triggering panic inside the governing party and fresh talk of a leadership coup.

Early council results pointed to a catastrophic night for Labour, with Reform smashing through once-safe strongholds across northern England and the Midlands while senior figures openly questioned whether Starmer can survive.

See also AN ORIGINAL story

Labour strongholds collapse

Reform ripped seats from Labour in councils that had been considered untouchable for generations.

Hartlepool, Tamworth, Redditch, Exeter and Tameside all slipped from Labour control or fell into chaos after huge swings to Farage’s insurgent party.

The symbolic damage was brutal in Tameside, where Labour lost dominance after 47 years.

In Halton, Labour lost 15 of the 16 seats it was defending to Reform. In Wigan, Reform swept almost every available seat, including 20 directly from Labour.

Traditional Red Wall territory across Lancashire, Merseyside and Greater Manchester also swung heavily toward Farage’s movement.

‘Historic change’ claims Farage

A jubilant Farage declared Britain’s political map had been permanently altered.

“I think what you’re witnessing is an historic change in British politics,” he said.

“Forget left-right. There is no more left-right. It is gone.”

The Reform leader claimed Labour was being “wiped out” across working-class areas that once formed the backbone of its electoral coalition.

Labour mutiny begins

The scale of the losses immediately unleashed open warfare inside Labour ranks.

Jonathan Brash demanded change “at the top of the Labour Party” after his wife lost her council seat in Hartlepool to Reform candidates.

Senior Labour figures are now reportedly manoeuvring behind the scenes as panic spreads through Westminster.

Three names are already circulating heavily as possible successors: Angela Rayner, Wes Streeting and Andy Burnham.

Reports also suggested Ed Miliband has privately urged Starmer to consider setting a departure timetable.

Cabinet splits emerging

Publicly, ministers attempted to hold the line.

David Lammy warned Labour not to play “pass the parcel” with the leadership, insisting replacing Starmer again would not solve the party’s deeper problems.

But insiders admitted nerves are shredding at the top of government.

Downing Street is reportedly considering an emergency reshuffle before all results are even declared, while Starmer is preparing a major speech aimed at calming furious MPs and reasserting control.

Britain’s two-party system shaken

The results are rapidly turning into something larger than a difficult local election night.

Both Labour and the Conservative Party appear to be haemorrhaging support simultaneously, while Reform and the Green Party of England and Wales surge from opposite directions.

In Wales, Labour’s decades-long grip on power looks under serious threat, while Reform could emerge as a major opposition force in both Cardiff and Scotland.

A leadership countdown may now be underway

Many Labour MPs had privately hoped the local elections would merely be difficult. Instead, the early numbers suggest something far worse — a revolt by working-class voters who only recently returned Labour to power nationally.

The biggest fear now gripping Westminster is not simply that Labour is losing votes.

It is that Reform has discovered a durable coalition powerful enough to permanently fracture Britain’s political landscape — and that Starmer may not survive long enough to stop it.

Cute. Reform only received 29% of the vote. Conservatives voted Reform and Labour bled votes to Green. No one really was given a mandate. Even a combined Conservative and Reform voter total falls well short of a majority expression. All we have here is an indication of voter discontent. The increased voter interest in the misfit Greens should be a concern. The UK is a fractured mess and it does not bode well.

Mid-Parliament local elections are almost always a disaster for the Party in power. It reflects 'ANTI-INCUMBENCY' and as always, that's driven by 24 hour media and pontificating Political analysts, of whom we have thousands.

As Sir John Major pointed out in an interview recently the 'game' of changing Prime Ministers dominates UK politics, 7 in the last 10 years ?

IMO the PM has made some shocking mistakes but Reform will prove to be a 'puff of wind' in 3 years time, Green are a joke, and I don't see the Tory vote recovering under the gruesome Badenoch. So we are in for some interesting years ahead.

Britain IS in quite a mess !

Wait and see Torquayfan the people want Reform we want the UK back under UK laws not run from Brussels, we want all illegals that invaded the Country removed immediatly, and we want homes for us not given to illegal invaders, we want the ECHR removed so rapists cannot abuse the system claiming human rights. This is part of what Reform has promissed so we will have to wait.

Barramarra - but some recent Polls have shown a majority in favour of a return to the EU. I'm not !!

Lammy has come out in defense of starmer saying you dont change a pilot mid flight.

Well - you do if he's planning on deliberately crashing the plane into the ground.

Local elections are never good for the party in power. It will be interesting to see how popular Reform is after two years of trying to run local councils and boroughs! I doubt any right-minded person will see them as a government in waiting and the idea of Farage as PM is laughable.

Restore and Reform loathe each other more than they hate the other parties! And I can't see the Tories uniting with Reform!

And the Idea of Starmer wasn't laughable? Don't make me laugh, He was the pathetic best, of a bad bunch of losers, a recipient of a protest vote who mistakenly and arrogantly thought it was a confirmation of his own popularity, It was never going to end well, that was clear from the beginning.

It will be fun watching the pernicious lefties tearing each other apart as they fight for political survival over the next few months , my advice to all of them is .. for the sake of the country (what's left of it ) do the decent thing and just go... now , all of you,

i know and there lies the problem, a reconciliation is required, they have some common ground, stopping the boats leaving the ECHR, deporting the illegals get that sorted and worry about the trivialities and details afterwards, a compromise is always possible

Yes, Starmer has been disappointing. Labour have two years to sort themselves out. It will get easier when people see what a mess Reform will make of running local councils. I have faith that Britain will never vote in an extreme Right government.

Can't fault you, I'm assuming the thumbs down emoji was sent by somebody who just doesn't want to wait ? I can see no other reason for downvoting your post

I think we should do away with net zero too (of course)

If Labour can't reform, then Reform may have to labour.

You reap what you sow... Karma for all Labour's terrible decisions that have impacted normal people beyond tolerance levels. Some serious introspection is in order for Labour. People are way less loyal to parties than they used to be and politicians have to deliver on their manifestos and promises now... and fast because people want better lives.

Collectively, politians in many countries have kicked the can down the road far too often and the problems have festered to such an extent that the medicine to fix them is going to be strong, and few of them want to grasp the nettle and deal with it... massive mistake.
