Pattaya’s expat underworld: when does gossip become “fact”?

Featured Replies

  • Popular Post

Pattaya has always had a strange expat culture built around rumours, whispers and larger-than-life characters.

In Pattaya, reputations often seem built or destroyed through gossip, forums, YouTube, Facebook groups, leaked chats and anonymous “sources”.

Over time it becomes hard to separate real investigative reporting from personal grudges, business feuds and outright fantasy.

Figures like Andrew Drummond became part of that culture themselves, publishing years of explosive exposés while also becoming a controversial figure surrounded by lawsuits, enemies, supporters and accusations of running personal campaigns against people he targeted.

The result is that almost every long-term Pattaya character eventually gets labelled as “connected”, “dangerous”, “protected” or “about to be exposed”.

Some later turn out to be exactly what people claimed.
Others appear to have simply become targets of endless gossip and online mythology.

So where do people think the line is?

Is Pattaya genuinely full of shady expat operators?

Or does the rumour mill eventually consume almost everyone involved in the nightlife/business scene?

Have forums and social media made this culture worse?

I came across this video, and there are plenty more, which sparked my curiosity

Venomous, best left alone, will strike when threatened ! can be fatal.

The Pattaya gossip mongers are like Fox News both never let the truth get in the way of a good story.

Andrew Drummond has been proven correct. The people he took on were criminals, often convicted in their homelands and taking up their activities in Thailand. Drummond at great risk to himself exposed fake lawyers, corrupt tourist police volunteers and financial fraud. Andrew Drummond did more to protect naive farangs than the Thai police and judicial system.

Drummond has harassed lots of innocent people over the last 10 years. He has been paid to attack people. Everything is documented here.

https://drummondhowellcampaign.com/

He went to the UK broke and to bring his kids up on benefits.

He has bullied many local news and has stuck up for criminals like luke Cook.

When it can be proven by a number of sources which are not in any way related to each other.

Andrew Drummond is good but he is convinced ladies here particularly Pattaya are trafficked.

Op, how widespread is money laundering? i would say ever business with several bars or massage shops are money laundering

I think the criminals were revealed when he left, he does not post much

now that he has left Thailand, I thought he exposed the underbelly of

Thailand ,and now no one else is doing it ,because it's very dangerous

regards worgeordie .

The seed of gossip is from people who are very self conscious, with no self esteem and thus love trying to pull down others and think that it take away the attention from them and the fact that they are a bunch of loosers. Sorry, but this is apparently the dynamics of gossip as per the DSM 5 - TR.

Yes that is how defamation laws work in Thailand, but that doesn't mean that Drummond was wrong.

I have been here long enough to have read the majority of his stories, and many of the high society expats he has exposed, are now gone.

They fled Thailand, or were allowed to flee by the people they had paid for years, before they were arrested.

I suspect the vast majority of expats living in Pattaya are just living their normal, everyday lives and have no connection to any of this--I certainly don't, and neither does anybody I know.

If the OP was built around a YouTube comic VDO then it deserves to be regarded as comedy itself. Look at the smoke coming out of the plane! Hilarious but fake.

Lying Sporran obviously is someone who was exposed by Drummond, and had to do a runner to avoid jail.
The channel is online for 5 years, has only content trying to slag off Drummond, and in 5 year gathered an amazing total of 719 subscribers.

Look like nobody is interested in his sour grapes.

What's your agenda? Have you joined today just so you can use this forum as an opportunity to disparage Andrew Drummond? There has been a campaign by the convicted criminals and their cronies to attack him, and it has fallen flat. The article you offer is 23 years old and much has happened since then, including the reverse of the decision you reference. Why did you intentionally misrepresent the case? What's your motive other than to mount a campaign of personal hate?

The initial charge against Drummond was an attempt to use Thailand's defamation laws to silence the journalist who had exposed multiple crimes. Rather revealing of your true intent that you do not mention that a few months later;

-The Times ‘ Thailand stringer, Andrew Drummond, has seen off a contempt of court prosecution brought in Thailand over comments reported on UK news websites.

-Drummond was initially sued by James Lumsden and Gordon May over stories which appeared in the Bangkok Post, also reported in several UK publications, which detailed their alleged involvement in fraud and the death of an investor in one of their sex clubs. He is currently appealing against two criminal libel convictions which resulted in two suspended jail terms and an £800 fine.

-Lumsden also launched contempt of court proceedings against Drummond over comments reported on the Media Guardian website, and therefore potentially readable in Thailand, which the journalist made after his (Lumsden's) criminal libel conviction in July.

https://pressgazette.co.uk/archive-content/thai-court-victory-for-drummond/

You also conveniently do not mention that the claims against Mr. Drummond over the years have not succeeded. Drummond either won his cases or had the them dismissed when they were shown to be unfounded.

I consider Mr. Drummond a brave a solid journalist. He frightened the farang fraudsters and pimps and disrupted their criminal activities. It makes him a hero in my books.

Spot on this is a Bryan Flowers disinfo campaign to traduce a most honourable man and using AI videos as part of that.

Andrew Drummond is a professional journalist who worked for many of the major newspapers in the UK and later was an international correspondent in Thailand. Bryan Flowers is a bar operator who has been accused by many people of some questionable practices, some of which went to court and saw his wife convicted and jailed (because the business was in her name and not in Bryan's). Andrew Drummond has been taking a close look at Bryan Flowers and his Soi 6 bar empire over the past year or two. Flowers has written all over social media and created websites to attack Drummond in return, often using AI. The linked video which attacks Drummond is AI-created and given everything that has happened, may be more of Flowers' handiwork.

I think lots of money laundering going on both domestic and intl. Seemed so when I lived there.

Porn

Drugs

Petty stuff. Usually the English involved in it all.

Always seemed pretty transparent I'd often wondered how they thought they could get away with it for years.

So many Thai spies everywhere in these farang ghettos. Probably western as well.

Andrew Drummond is just another loser that arrived in Pattaya and tried to invent an income and failed. He represents all those Pattaya expats that arrived in Pattaya, tried to stay, lost, and now have their tail between their legs bitter at anyone who achieved more.

Drummond has been a low value under-achiever for most of his adult life, and deeply bitter and envious at any other man that is either successful and of higher value.

Does he write about women?

Does he write about general Thai or International news events.

No and No again. Its all about men he wish he could've been and the life he never had.

Who would want to trade places with Drummond at any time of his life? Eh? A awkward, out of shape, broke man lacking masculinity from 35yo until now at 75yo who now lives off taxpayers (who actually worked) to raise 3 teenagers alone as a single Father.

Who? Nobody.

No partner.

No Pattaya.

No money.

No assets.

Beating the drum about the person he promotes and never was when most 75yo are retired enjoying life, rather than gaggling about some obscure award that he only received and no-one else thereafter... where every article about him is self-written.

Additionally, Drummond supports a wide network of lowlifes, career criminals and losers, like Stephen Carpenter a career con-artist and like Drummond, another failed Pattaya expat:
