Why do people always say prices in $€£

Featured Replies

  • Popular Post

Anyone else find this totally irrelevant, they always say 300 THB..that's only $10..what has that got to do with it...they forget, rents, taxes, salaries, regulations are all far more than Thailand...like comparing apples and oranges..

Another thing, false economy..

There's a YouTube guy bought a house..he's already spent 20k on a canopy, 8k on a ceiling fan, 12k having his windows darkened and none of it's made a bit of difference..an extra 1k a month on lekky he could have had his air con on...that's over 3 years worth already...and this guy has been here years

What planet are these people on

Yeah common for people to quote prices back home which are completely irrelevant, try telling them that

For whatever reason some folks refer baht บาท ฿ as bahts. There is no such thing as bahts in Thai or its currency, so please cut it out because it looks silly.

Sure, next time 😁

Should the B not come before the number like the $ or pound sign (sorry, on International keyboard layout)?

GBP 1.00 = BHT 43.788 = USD 1.3474.

Not on Lazada, Shopee or in 7/11, Makro and Lotus's.

How does one pronounce THB please?

Not on Lazada, Shopee or in 7/11, Makro and Lotus's.

Well then I’m wrong. So much for my 2฿ input.

How does one pronounce THB please?

Bat but like a sheep’s sound…baaht

Agreed. He’s managed to spend a fortune “solving” a problem that an air con remote would fix in 5 seconds.

I even wrote to him saying exactly that — and pointing out I’m baffled he’s boasting about a UK pension he doesn’t need, while acting like switching on the AC is some kind of luxury. 🤦

Does he get his pension already ? ..I think he has another sun saving idea also, will have to look but yes...just turn the a/c on

..that sweet poor dog must be cooking

Yes, I’m pretty sure I heard him say on his live stream last night that his pension payments have already started and he’s carefully putting it away as he doesn’t need it.

Life’s too short not to be comfortable in Thailand’s heat and humidity, especially when you’re openly talking about surplus funds. Turning the A/C on really shouldn’t require a PhD in energy economics. Totally amazing.

Pretty sure he also said the Mrs has finished work for good, so I imagine she might have a view on sitting there melting while he’s ‘banking’ the pension instead of just turning the A/C on.

We only use the AC at night as I live in a 2 storey house where the ground floor is never really that hot so we use fans every day. My wife is 70 years old, she had many small restaurants in Bangkok and Pattaya but she has stopped working now. She is an excellent cook of Thai food, English food ans Isaan food. She also likes working in the garden, so she doesn't miss going to work except for the "money" she used to make.

She only started there a few months ago. She can help with his garden 😁 ..I am saving a fortune on talc now

I'm not really a YouTuber fan, and this guy is a dinosaur but sometimes quite funny with his antics so worth watching occasionally

Nothing wrong with keeping things in perspective, but your entitled to disagee.

That's exactly what I am talking about...so many people say it's only baht and that's only so many $....a totally stupid and irrelevant comparison...maybe for a one week tourist but people living here it's absolute nonsense.

If I am talking to a Thai about prices in $aud I convert to THB in my mind and tell them that. Most have no idea what other currencies are worth.

Owned by a Chinese billionaire with a B.

Then there are those that call it "Bath". Maybe they are considering a career in money laundering.

I'm OK with the $10. It is the ONLY that sometimes irks me. I think the ONLY is added to presume some kind of superiority?

Locals may still may ฿ 300 ( is the a space or not) but to them it is ฿ 300 as they don't get paid or earn money in Aus$/Can$ etc.Add to that most keyboards or symbol look up tables don't have a ฿ symbol. Mine doesn't have a £ symbol for instance.

Expats get paid in external currencies so maybe $10 means something to them like a small bottle of wine or the like.,

But really the ONLY doesn't matter if one's bank account is in ฿.

THB - Tee hach bee

USD - You es dee

CHF - See hach eff

Sorry. Couldn’t help it.

Because they are the only relevant currencies on the planet

May well be absolute nonsense to you

My income is in £s, so why shouldn't I have mental note in £s regarding my expenditure.

As the saying goes, "Look after the pennies and the pounds will look after themselves".

But that's not the reason they are stating other currencies. Saying it's only 395 baht or £10 in UK for a roast dinner is plane stupid. Who cares what it is, it's totally irrelevant..in fact 395 baht for a roast dinner is very expensive..at that rate it should be £80 in UK...which we all know you can get a roastie for £15 or less
