Personally have never been to Krungthepmahanakhon Amonrattanakosin Mahintharayutthaya Mahadilokphop Noppharatratchathaniburirom Udomratchaniwetmahasathan AmonphimanawatansathitSakkathattiyawitsanukamprasit, the wife goes two or three times a year and complains about how much time it takes to get from place to place there, so no thanks and will probably never make it to Krungthepmahanakhon Amonrattanakosin Mahintharayutthaya Mahadilokphop Noppharatratchathaniburirom Udomratchaniwetmahasathan AmonphimanawatansathitSakkathattiyawitsanukamprasit and prefer slower paced visits.

Krungthepmahanakhon Amonrattanakosin Mahintharayutthaya Mahadilokphop Noppharatratchathaniburirom Udomratchaniwetmahasathan AmonphimanawatansathitSakkathattiyawitsanukamprasit is a sheet hole, thats why many residents flock to Pattaya on the weekends.

Me, I hate Krungthepmahanakhon Amonrattanakosin Mahintharayutthaya Mahadilokphop Noppharatratchathaniburirom Udomratchaniwetmahasathan AmonphimanawatansathitSakkathattiyawitsanukamprasit.

In my 20+ yrs in Pattaya i can count on 1 hand how many times I have been to I hate Krungthepmahanakhon Amonrattanakosin Mahintharayutthaya Mahadilokphop Noppharatratchathaniburirom Udomratchaniwetmahasathan AmonphimanawatansathitSakkathattiyawitsanukamprasit

I'm hearing you, I hate it when they abbreviate Bangkok. It has a specific meaning. Bangkok's official ceremonial full name in English is: Krungthepmahanakhon Amonrattanakosin Mahintharayutthaya Mah

55555 Get over yourself. Pattaya is an insult to most Thais.

Sure, that's why half of Bangkok rams the place every extended weekend. Get over that.

That's the one that always gets me. If I understand correctly, there is equal mid-tone emphasis on all 3 syllables.

How to pronounce Pattaya like a Thai......

(i.e. similar for all intents and purposes)

พัทยา (Putt-ta-yaa)
Like in golf, tar and yaa-baa (but soft p and t, no air, smooth flow)

NB Not linguistically precise—but that’s not the goal.

its definitely not putt ta ya its Pat as in ( postman ) then the unwritten (in Thai) "a" is hardly vocalised followed by yah it could almost be written Pat'ya but the apostrophe is just a bit "lacking"

That is the reason I go now to Hua Hin. Much easier to pronounce.

Paat. You roll the A.

yeah I reckon the tones the same on all 3 syllables but there is definitely a seriously reduced emphasis on the mid syllable when the Thais say it In fairness, people can be forgiven for mispronouncing it if they don't speak Thai and have only seen it written in roman script but I agree "patts" is pretty sad it to me evokes an image of a certain kind of person, a kind I can't really describe but a kind I don't like , consequently nobody I associate with would ever use that word

raised a good point there I reckon a lot of Thais would struggle to actually pronounce the full name of Bangkok correctly,

There are quite a few " r" s in it and many of them struggle to get there tongue round the "r" s giggle (settle down lol) never mind roll em

Have the Thai girls at 0.55min got it right............

They roll R, L and A. But also drop Rs. Khrap sounds like Khrup or Khup.

They drill the pupils ad nauseam till they can pronounce it correctly.

  • Hua: Pronounced like "hwa" (rhymes with "spa" or the "wha" in "whatever"). A common mistake is saying it as two separate syllables like "Hoo-ah", but it flows together as one quick sound.

but its nowhere near as much fun, why not take the easiest option "Cha-Am simple to say and the sort of place you only visit once Its very Thai orientated clearly indicated by a beach totally hidden from sun /day light by interlocking umbrellas

stopped off on the way to wah hin for a pi$$ and again on the way home ?

Phuket is the only island without a Koh in it's name. It could be Goh Fuket to some lol

Stayed 2 nights once and had lunch once. Not much there.

They just didn't look the brightest, well the one on the right at least

the one on the left looked a bit "studious" so she probably got it bang on the one on the right was "do-able " so i didn't ( wasn't able ) to take much notice of what she was saying

Howdy y'all, I just love Poo-tie-ya!

I disagree.

I already said it wasn’t linguistically precise, so that criticism misses the point. I used ‘putt’ as a rough approximation, though ‘paht’ would have been better, but many would still take it as ‘pat’. And ‘pat’ as in ‘postman’ is at least understandable to some English ears — unless you’re leaning into a Scottish-style vowel.

My ‘no air, smooth flow’ comment already addressed your ‘pat’ya’ point, and ‘yaa’ is long, not short.

It's amusing to see non-natives discussing the (supposedly) correct pronunciation of a Thai placename. Personally, I've always wondered what the Thai pronunciation of worcestershire sauce might be, especially as an accompaniment to roasted squirrel. coffee1

I enjoy roasted with HP or my favourite is pat phet gra rot

Why do some farang have to change it to 'Patts'.

That´s easy! It´s just because they believe it´s kind of tough to do. They think it makes them look and sound like they are in the group who knows and have been there and lived long time. Makes them feel a little bit over other people. In other words, totally delusional persons, that need their head taken care of by a specialist .

Mispronunciations is of course always forgivable, but giving nicknames to places has always struck me as a pretentious attempt to feign 'old hand' status. People who use these terms need to be made aware of how unpleasant and jarring these nicknames sound to the native Thai ear, and to those foreigners who have bothered to gain an appreciation for the beauty of the Thai language.

Nah, such an equally pretentious attitude is deserving of torment!
