June 9Jun 9 Of course, because the way to pronounce an implied vowel in a word (as in พัทยา) is so blindingly obvious that even Thai people have to buy a book to find out how to pronounce names properly. <rolleyes>

Phitsanulok is P'lok.Prince William was Wills for quite a while. Edited June 9Jun 9 by wil iam not

My friends and I for decades have referred to the place as Patters, I see no disrespect or harm there.
June 10Jun 10 The answer here is quite straightforward: Patts is rendered thus in an analogous (and equally lo-so) way as "Bangers" for Bangkok. Bangers and Patts are the kind of locutions used by mainly English (not British) gentlemen who at one point many decades ago attended what in England is called a private school (not Public for the upper classes or State for the riff-raff).In other words, a private school is the kind of place where a lower middle-class family with a few shekels put away might send their numbskull kid so as to avoid the riff-raff or because he (usually he) has failed the 11-plus exam to get him into a Grammar School. (I said "many decades ago".)The products of private schools can now and again (tempus fugit) be found on Asean News threads banging away about Bangers and Patts and (who knows?) Chiangers....
June 10Jun 10 Popular Post Mispronunciations is of course always forgivable, but giving nicknames to places has always struck me as a pretentious attempt to feign 'old hand' status. People who use these terms need to be made aware of how unpleasant and jarring these nicknames sound to the native Thai ear, and to those foreigners who have bothered to gain an appreciation for the beauty of the Thai language.

And the second part Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK) is nicknamed "Swampy" because it was built on a marshy wetland formerly known as Nong Ngu Hao, which translates to Cobra Swamp. Funny how foreigners come in and are offended by place names. Ask a foreigner where Soi Chaiyapoon is in Pattaya and they might know, ask them where “Soi pothole” is (which is the same street) and they will know for sure. And if you lived there long enough you will know where “Soi pi$$ alley” is after walking down the alley you understand the name, as it is where every win rider stops to drain their bladder. June 10Jun 10 How to pronounce Pattaya like a Thai......(i.e. similar for all intents and purposes)พัทยา (Putt-ta-yaa) Like in golf, tar and yaa-baa (but soft p and t, no air, smooth flow)NB Not linguistically precise—but that’s not the goal.
