Saying an easy simple word - "Pattaya"

The word Pattaya has a specific meaning in the Thai language.

Leave the word alone, have some basic respect.

The REAL question is:

Are you able to even PRONOUNCE the word Pattaya....

THIS, I would like to know.

Well......

CAN you.....?

If you want to try, then just please refer to the proper spelling, FIRST: พัทยา

Here is a vid that will help The Farang practice, over and over again.

But, will they ever get it right?

Most will not.

Most will not even care.

I'm hearing you, I hate it when they abbreviate Bangkok. It has a specific meaning. Bangkok's official ceremonial full name in English is: Krungthepmahanakhon Amonrattanakosin Mahintharayutthaya Mah

Sure, that's why half of Bangkok rams the place every extended weekend. Get over that.

Pat-ta-ya is three syllables, same as Man-ches-ter or Birm-ing-ham, known as Manc and Brum. Phitsanulok is P'lok.

Prince William was Wills for quite a while.

Yes really annoys when some farangs pronounce it Pa..ttaya

Don't get annoyed, not worth it, as are these two posts regarding the pronunciation of Pattaya and Jomtien. The radio says PATtaya 96, but my Mrs says pattaYA!

But as long as you know where they mean, does it matter really? Let's call the whole thing off.

Comparisons made in the song

raised a good point there I reckon a lot of Thais would struggle to actually pronounce the full name of Bangkok correctly,

There are quite a few " r" s in it and many of them struggle to get there tongue round the "r" s giggle (settle down lol) never mind roll em

And some do not know the difference between THERE and THEIR.

I disagree.

I already said it wasn’t linguistically precise, so that criticism misses the point. I used ‘putt’ as a rough approximation, though ‘paht’ would have been better, but many would still take it as ‘pat’. And ‘pat’ as in ‘postman’ is at least understandable to some English ears — unless you’re leaning into a Scottish-style vowel.

My ‘no air, smooth flow’ comment already addressed your ‘pat’ya’ point, and ‘yaa’ is long, not short.

It is not At.

Chang is Chaang/charng/chahng

I agree but can’t see it upsetting the average Thai who abbreviates more than enough words and nicknames nearly every given name.

I am well aware of the difference and that's why I'm hanging my head in shame, I apologise unreservedly, I've let you down, ( and a fanboy of yours called "new guy"), I've let the forum down, but worst of all I've let my self down . Serves me right for arrogantly thinking I could live without a spell checker. I was a little bit disappointed that you elected to mention this publicly, I thought you might have discreetly sent me a private message so that I could correct my stupid mistake, but on reflection you are right , A public shaming is the least I deserve. and its too late for me to edit it now anyway,

Strangely though in an earlier post you appeared to decry pedantry , but I can't deny your right to a change of heart.

Ps. Their and There would rarely be written in block capitals, and that is not something I was guilty of? did you do that for maximum dramatic effect?

Yes, I did it for maximum dramatic effect, to bring attention to your mistake. Did I really decry pedantry, when?

Thank god for that I was worried you had made a rare mistake,

I thought you were decrying pedantry when you wrote

Although as you have highlighted i might well be mistaken

I don't really mind being pulled up on language There is not much us British can support or be proud of these days without facing some sort of accusation I don't think the language has yet been "officially" as racist , supremacist or colonialist so lets use it, and use it properly ,whilst we still can. future generations will be speaking Arabic

Its primarily a UK and Aussie thing where they feel the need to abbreviate words as if it shows they are "insiders" in a club

No disrespect or harm meant, even still, sounds kinda dumb.

The one that causes me to subtract 50 points from my estimate of a person's IQ is calling Suvarnabhumi by the name "Swampy".

Again, just sounds dumb.

This thread is dumb. The airport was built on a swamp, thus Swampy as another poster has already posted.

I think you are showing your low IQ number by your OP, and labeling the names as dumb due to the fact you cannot understand/accept why certain places are referred to by other names.

Maybe just trolling aye?

Using swampy for the airport just sounds dumb.

Lovely that it has historical significance for you.

Even still, sounds dumb.

Nong Ngu Hao (meaning Cobra Swamp) site officially changed its name to Suvarnabhumi Airport in 2000. For those of us here for a while prior to 2000, we were used to it being called Nong Ngu Hao (meaning Cobra Swamp) and called by Swampy expats. I still call it Swampy from time.

Pretty sure ALL thais learn the full name for Bangkok in school, and can recite/pronounce it correctly.

Use of L for R is common speech.

Gor Tor Mor (กทม) is the Thai abbreviation for Krung Thep Maha Nakhon (Bangkok).

fascinating who would have guessed what the Thai abbreviation was! thank you "oh knowledgeable one"

Why does it matter as long as everyone knows what it means? People quite often call Patrick Pat for example but everyone know what it means.

So what does it mean when somebody calls a "Patrick" "Pat" I'll be honest I have no Idea

It doesn't mean anything, just a shortened version of the name.

My wife's family have lived in the area for a couple of hundred years. She is quite proud of Pattaya and often tells people to visit it. There is more to it than Soi 6, the beach and Soi Honey.

Nice comment. The first time I visited Pattaya was about 45 years ago, the last about 15 to 20 kilmetres was dirt and very muddy and slippert during / after rain.

Then it was a very small fishing village, my GF's family had a favorite small hotel (near their house), we stayed there many times and enjoyed the seafood dishes, fresh that day.

No supermarkets but many small and bigger mom and pop grocery shops.

I recall my GF's father often mentoning 'need to fill up with gasoline', he would guide us (we followed him) to older style gasoline pumps to bypass very muddy roads.

OP Will go mad when they realise people call Bangkok, aka Krungthepmahanakhon Amonrattanakosin Mahintharayutthaya Mahadilokphop Noppharatratchathaniburirom Udomratchaniwetmahasathan Amonphimanawatansathit Sakkathattiyawitsanukamprasit, Bangers.

... but its the same length in Syllable. Bangkok... Bangers.

and why do Thais not say Krungthepmahanakhon Amonrattanakosin Mahintharayutthaya Mahadilokphop Noppharatratchathaniburirom Udomratchaniwetmahasathan Amonphimanawatansathit Sakkathattiyawitsanukamprasit and instead all say Krungthep cutting the first word in half. How dare they! Show some respect.

And to the rest of the country "Pattaya Girl" is the ultimate insult.

Hmm. I wonder what the inspiration for this thread was.

Are you sure? Most of the "girls" in Pattaya seem to be from all parts of the country.

With the exception of wonderful Chiang Rai, of course!

But I think Pattaya is a blast, so do many others.

Unfortunately I have a full-time job in Bangkok that cuts into my free time, otherwise I would be there often.
