Thailand has always had a close friendship with Scandanavian countries going back hundreds of years. Here are a few facts.

Aviation Pioneer: Scandinavian Airlines (SAS) played a foundational role in Thai aviation by co-founding Thai Airways International in 1960.

Travel Hub: Thailand is one of the top long-haul destinations for Scandinavians escaping the cold, with hundreds of thousands of Nordic tourists visiting annually.

Expat Communities: Vibrant Thai communities reside in Scandinavia, and thousands of Nordic nationals live full- or part-time in Thailand.

Sometimes those assumptions come quicker than the usual ones, without thinking??, and hard to take back then.

Daily occurrence of some scummy Brit often shirtless causing trouble in Pattaya, maybe time to abort the nationality.

Thanks for posting this. it’s appreciated to see such honesty from a Brit.

Frustrating that some other deluded people still deny well documented facts and live in a false reality, even when contradictory facts are presented to them weekly, when yet another Brit on holiday makes the headlines.

Some have claimed that Brits make up the majority of the news here in Thailand because there are so many of them. That’s factually incorrect. Tourists from the UK rank around #7 in total arrivals to Thailand. Among those 7, Brits make most of the news.

Overrepresented. Period.

A few people complain about 'Brit bashing'. But most of us know that well-behaved Brits are well liked by other nationalities. It's only a tiny minority of Brit tourists (note: Not expats) who taint the reputation of other Brits, and make the news.

OP should definitely have a talk. Would be enlightening.

No to Aussie, too many bogans

No to American, too loud

No to Canadian, anger management issues.

I think I'll be a kiwi, generally smarter than aussies.

Good idea?

Yeah, NZ is a perfect choice to avoid to be thrown into the basket of scummies (I'm used to call them riffraff)

My US-conservation group tells me same. They pretend to be Canadians.

Scandis are well known among Thais in Thailand, but we are not exposed to too much negativity, and that is a good thing.

How do you know that ? (who it was).

Obviously someone paid compensation to grease the wheels of 'forgiveness'... (brothers or parents)

Par for the course for Thailand - payment to get out of trouble.

In this case, no one was hurt, but there was a significant loss of face for the Thai Police.

Check-point ignored (or not seen) & Policeman disarmed - that was the real issue.

But the other side of the coin - a potentail loose cannon (no pun) with a loaded unsecured weapon was controlled - that of course depends on the optics from which we viewed this event.

Its not clear if the Policeman was angry enough to 'shoot' at the brothers - but it wouldn't be the first time in Thailand - precedence of policemen shooting foreigners out of anger / loss of face in Thailand exists.

Back on Topic - Two NewZealanders who made the press 27 months ago is hardly evidence that paints all New Zealanders as 'wrong-uns'.... but those such as SafetyFirst want to paint any negative story involving a foreigner with his own additional bias to colour the narrative - the repetition of which on this forum is quite frankly tiresome.

The vast majority of foreigners who visit and live Thailand are very decent folk - no matter the nationality or area they are in - its only those who feed off the negative news who like to amplify the negativity to suit an unhinged and poisoned narative.

So - Brits and anyone else go ahead an be proud of your nationality - its only the unhinged weirdo's and freaks who pass judgement with such overt bias.

Brush brush away the cop doing his job, just focus on the trash spoilt brats from NuZelund, really Richard, research the family before you bash thai police further!

I am proud to be British and don't have any problems letting people know that

People fought and died for me to express my right to free speech

In all seriousness, if anybody lies about their nationality then shame on them for being such a prissy.

Extremely tiresome and often dangerous to be around.
Look at the football - the world welcomes the jocks, paddys and even sheep ****gers but get the plastic glasses out and the shutters up when pikey English types rock up.
I get the OP's shame at being associated with them but, if it's that much of a problem, just leave pattaya - those types are attracted to pattaya and benidorm like flies to

Why are the Irish never embarrassed to say they're from Ireland? According to every stereotype imaginable, they're religious fanatics, heavy drinkers, loudmouths, redheads, money grubbers, pale as vampires, hot headed, and always ready to settle things with their fists. I mean, for all the stereotypes people throw around, the people in that country don't really seem to fit any of them.

If I was Irish, I mean the Republic, I would be proud. They were put upon by the British for centuries and then eventually fought and won their independence.

It seems that attacking Brits in a vicious way is perfectly normal and okay on this forum, like so with Jews are far game... try applying that to any other nationality or country and there would be sanctimonious howls of protest. There are idiots of all nationalities, no reason to single out one... even thought there are many UK haters on this forum who are little more than the equivalent of racists.

Fair comment- but as a Brit I do regularly get embarrassed reading of another drunken Brit showing he has the IQ of a mouse when getting drunk and violent

We should also be precise about the Brits that cause trouble, it's 99% the younger scummy type that also cause trouble back home, you recognise them straight away, not older retired expats

Definitely more of a generational thing for the most part. Most of not all older Brits I come across are quite polite as well as most other Western nationals. It’s more of a mix for the younger generation that has yet to have been seasoned by life’s wringer.

Then you will need to not wear a shirt and only a leather vest and add a rising tone at the end of every sentence.

Just pretend you just woke up out of a 30 year coma and aren't really sure about everything.

I'm from uhhh... Australia?!?!

Fair enough, they feel let down by their countries. But honestly, there is a limit to how much negativity you can cultivate before it becomes unhealthy. Everything has its peak before change happens. I think the same applies to woke. Time to land that experiment now and keep the good essence.

Norwegians are lucky because the people who they voted in to control the country care about fellow Norwegians.

Unlike Australians, who voted in criminals whose only concern is to line their own filthy pockets, leaving its citizens battling.

You idiots who voted Labour should be ashamed of yourselves

Incorrect - they didn't beat up the cop - you made that up - again showing anti-foreigner bias.

This was the well-publicised incident in Phuket in March 2024 involving New Zealand brothers Hamish Day and Oscar Mattson. The facts are a little different from the version that has circulated online:

  • They allegedly rode through a police checkpoint.

  • A traffic policeman pursued and stopped them.

  • According to Thai police, an argument followed after the officer began recording the incident on his phone.

  • The brothers believed the officer was so angry that he might shoot them and they disarmed the policeman.

  • A shot was discharged (highlighting the officers weapon was loaded - chambered) - no one was injured.

The brothers' argued they believed the officer was so angry that he might shoot them, and that they disarmed him purely to protect themselves (feasible).

Thai authorities charged the brothers with offences including assaulting an officer (grappling with him to disarm him), robbery (for taking the firearm), obstructing police duties, driving without a licence, and attempted bribery.

The criminal case did not proceed.

  • The brothers reached a settlement with the injured officer, paying compensation (undisclosed amount).

  • They left Thailand and returned to New Zealand.

  • They were also banned from re-entering Thailand.

Not shinning examples - but also not quite the "two NZ brothers beat up cop" story either - a lot more nuance to it - but if they thought the Policeman angry enough to shoot them (and that has happened before) - then they are alive because of their actions.

BS ! When has a Thai Police Officer ever shot at a Farang ? The lying Kiwi Brothers are from a wealthy Family and paid a fortune in bribes to escape prison ! Arrogant rats ! Hope they'll never allowed to visit Thailand ever again !

Not everything is perfect in Norway, and most people have had their share of disappointments. The question is what you do with it. You can let it take over and get stuck in a negative pattern, or you can move on, deal with what you can, and not let it poison your mind or everyone around you.

Thai police is to gullible, the most patient police force in the world. I do not know now in Phuket, but I guess something have changed during the last years, and especially after this incident.

Thai police used to be like security guards who just happenede to wear a uniform but never had to do much or had much experience, and everything would be solved with a little bit of time. Saw one big 130kg falang in Hua Hin once, wiped the floor with them, and the police used 30-40 min to calm him down without force

It's not easy to move on when our government is

  1. welcoming ISIS brides to return to Australia.

  2. Mass immigration without having adequate housing, infrastructure etc.

  3. Universities for Aussies not free

  4. We are in the top 3 of fossil fuel exporters and our petrol is shipped offshore to be refined 😂

I can go on for another few pages, our government has failed us

But I think the “snillisme” will stop now, and things will change in the future. But it have been a process for decades already.

“Snillisme” is a unique Norwegian word. I would translate it as “kindism” — when kindness becomes so soft that it creates problems.

The term “snillisme” is generally credited to Rune Gerhardsen, who introduced it in 1991in an interview with the Norwegian newspaper Dagbladet. He later expanded the idea in a book, and the word quickly entered Norwegian political debate.

Originally, snillisme referred to what Gerhardsen saw as misplaced or excessive kindness—a society that was so reluctant to set boundaries or make demands that kindness became counterproductive. Over time, the word broadened and is now often used about overly soft approaches to crime, discipline, immigration, parenting, education, and politics.
