Jai Dee Posted August 30, 2007 Author Posted August 30, 2007 BMA warns against depression in late August The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) is being prepared to deal with depression expected in late August and warns people to avoid staying in open areas during thunderstorms. Bangkok Deputy Governor Bannasopit Mekvichai (บรรณโศภิษฐ์ เมฆวิชัย) discloses that global warming contributes to more frequent and more severe natural disasters. As for Thailand, it is being influenced by the La Niña phenomenon, resulting in a premature raining season, thundershowers, and gusts. The research center for global weather change in the Southeast Asian region indicates that thundershower and gusts in Bangkok and the vicinities have been caused by a stronger Southwestern monsoon. Another factor attributing to the monsoon become stronger is heat dome phenomenon in Bangkok. The deputy governor therefore suggests people to be prepared for dangers from thundershower during the period from late August to October. She encourages them to call the hotline 199 if see toppled billboards, trees, or electricity poles.
