Hi Alex,

What I do is design a unique course meeting my student's individual needs. They also get to see some interesting locations and gain an insight into Thai culture while they learn.

I always run a basic composition lesson on the first day of study, even with students who have quite a lot of photography experience. Not only is it a good exercise it also helps me see the way they approach their photography. If you have some experience I would consider working on some feature ideas with you. Running you through the process of developing a photographic story. This way you learn not only good photographic technique but have a set of targets we can use to improve your skills. I am fluent in Thai, which helps greatly when working on features.

We will also cover:

Practical Technique/ Camera Operation

Basic Composition

Location, how best to explore a place photographically and gain access.

People both Documentary and Portraits

Shooting Movement and Action

Abstract

Flash and Lighting techniques

Tripod night photography

Post Production using Photoshop

well maybe my course is the best, except i dont do one.

suggestions for a beginner (sounds like you are, no offence)

1. buy a good tripod.

2. then buy a camera.

3. buy a BOOK!!

Photography nowadays is just so easy.

a digital camera eliminates 3 years of intense study and practice.

BUT

start at the start.....

the fundamentals of photography haven't changed forever.

a good techical type book for college students is what you need.

learn about shutter speeds, apertures, depth of field, what different focal lengths do for a shot etc.

exposure is still important even in a photoshop world,

learn what your camera will record and not record,

digital is close to film now but tranny film can only record a six stop range, B&W similar,

thats why Ansel Adams developed the zone system, so he knew exactly what he would get on film and choose to forget extreme highs or lows.

practice:

1. shoot heaps and heaps, look learn, throwaway.

2. take camera everywhere and shoot litttle, be very judicious, as if each shot cost you 2 dollars (it used to!!)

3. shoot what attracts you. dont try to shoot postcards or things that other people might like.

4. get some filters like a 1A, 85B, polarizer, graduates - do it before photoshop so you learn about light temperature and colour.

good luck and avoid the pretty picture syndrome.

Learn how to use it completely in manual.

You will be surprised at what you can learn from the online tutorials.
