June 11Jun 11 A foreign couple have been detained by police in Udon Thani after a baby girl was found abandoned beneath a rain tree and later died despite attempts to save her. Investigators said the pair were located at a hotel in Udon Thani and brought in for questioning, where they allegedly admitted the child had been born in Nong Khai before being left in Udon Thani.Get today's headlines by email The case began on 10 June 2026 when a female infant, was discovered beneath a rain tree behind the Sing Isan warehouse in Soi Chan Charoen Suk, Don Udom community, within Udon Thani municipality. Three boys aged between 10 and 12 found the child while fishing near a drainage canal and alerted authorities.Emergency responders performed CPR for around 15 minutes before transferring the infant to Udon Thani Hospital. Police officer Pol Sgt Maj Charoen Chanrak, who assisted at the scene, later said the baby was still warm when found but had no pulse, and hospital staff were unable to restore vital signs.Police from Muang Udon Thani Police Station reviewed municipal and private CCTV footage from the area. Investigators identified a tall, fair-skinned foreign man with brown hair and a dark skinned woman carrying the infant wrapped in towels.Footage showed the pair walking through several streets before stopping briefly near a house with a security camera, then leaving the infant beneath the tree at approximately 9.20am on 10 June. The couple then left the area, returning by the same route.According to Pol Col Phatthanawong Chanphon, superintendent of Muang Udon Thani Police Station, officers searched hotels, resorts and accommodation within a one-kilometre radius of the scene. One hotel reported that a foreign man had enquired about a room, but declined to stay after being told the rate was 1,400 baht per night.Further information was provided by police in Nong Khai, who reported that the couple were recognised from TV coverage and had previously appeared at a coffee shop in the province. Police said the pair had reportedly carried out some form of strange ritual at the coffee shop before leaving and travelling to Udon Thani.Authorities had also checked immigration records and found no evidence that either individual had left Thailand via the Thai-Lao Friendship Bridge checkpoint in Nong Khai, which keep the focus of the investigation to the Udon Thani area. The two foreign tourists were found staying at a local hotel, where they had checked in the day before. The hotel staff reported that upon entering the hotel, they played, what they described as tribal music from their mobile phones, continuously. The housekeeping staff also reported that they had played loud tribal music all night.Pictures courtesy of KomchadluekPolice later reported that the man was identified as a 39-year-old Swedish national and the woman as a 29-year-old American national, the names were withheld by authorities.Komchadluek reported that police said the couple remain in custody while questioning continues to establish the circumstances and possible motives behind the baby’s death. Investigators are preparing further legal proceedings as the case remains under active investigation.Join the discussion? Already a member? June 12Jun 12 If it turns out to be a case of abandonment after delivery of an unwanted pregnancy, it shows a remarkable naivety about Thai law enforcement's ability to track down who the mother was, not to mention a lack of awareness about the prevalence of CCTV cameras in Thailand.

June 12Jun 12 Very sad, and a rotten end for a life that had hardly begun. RIP little one. Hoping you are in a better place.
June 12Jun 12 Sad to see a child’s life ended before it had hardly begun. I have to say, from the details in the story, the police did a good job on this one. Not often I say that but credit where credit is due.

June 12Jun 12 Terrible crime... a short drop and a sudden stop would be appropriate. However, the first stop for these two should be Bang Kwang Central Prison or Klong Prem Central Prison... would soon get reality crashing into their deluded world.

To hell with the Wokes and lefties, bring back the death sentence

June 12Jun 12 There are so many young couples who would be so happy to adopt this newborn. They could have even given the infant to anyone on the street or left her in a temple. They obviously had other priorities. They can't ever forgive themselves for taking their baby's life?

June 12Jun 12 I want to know more. Something doesn’t add up for me. I mean they are still sickening to leave their child under a tree. Was the child sick? Did they murder the child first, which Doesn’t seem to be the case if it was warm and they tried CPR. Did they see the CCTV and put the child in view hoping someone would see and come to the rescue? I just want to know more. It’s so sad to believe that people can be so cruel and disgusting. In any case they are at 100% and should pay dearly for killing this poor innocent child. RIP little one.

The baby was found with no pulse , but they gave CPR because the baby was still warm , which means the baby died just immediately before being found . They quite possible could have killed the baby before abandoning it
