I'm wondering if you have a ground loop coz you have a common power supply.

This is the camera that get power over LAN.

If only this camera is connected then there is minimal interference, but the more cameras I connect the interference get worse,

If I disconnect power cord and run from battery then there is no interference.

My guess is that's noise on the video signal. Is the DVR and the power supply at the same ground potential.

Not sure what you mean.

At this point the DVR isn't connected to the power supply yet, but all sockets are grounded, so everything will connect to the same ground

I mean is the DVR and power supply sharing the same ground. They are often located far apart and may not be sharing the same ground level.

When you touch metal areas like the power supply case or bnc connectors do the lines on the screen shift.

Yes everything is sharing the same ground as it is all plugged into the same grounded twin socket in the loft.

The individual power adapters are also plugged into the same sockets, so I don't understand what the difference is.

Touching the power supply case doesn't change anything, but since I'm in the loft on a viva board floor, I guess I'm not grounded.

It could be a different ground potential if they were not sharing the same ground connection, I was simply trying to help find any ground loop issues.

I appreciate your help, I only don't understand why all power supplies I have tried create the same problem Remember the Hikvision power supply also had the same interference.

But if I run this power supply from the battery, interference is gone

That's the biggest clue so far, you have a noise problem and they can be tricky to track down. Some adapters are super quiet others noisy as hell and ripple easily when loaded, this can run you in circles.

So I guess I will continue with the individual adapters and a UPS.

Now where to find a decent extension cord with 8 sockets? Please don't say Shopee haha

Also the sockets need to be in the direction that I can plug in 8 adapters next to each other, because 90% of the extension cords I have seen they are in the wrong direction.

I found one so far (AMC) but they are a piece of cr*p

I have just completed my build. I installed 10 PoE cameras, connected to 2 x 8 port PoE routers which are connected to my local network, a DVR on the network is used to record all feeds. All supply's are from a UPS.

If your cameras are not POE use a PoE splitter for each and feed to local network, in future, if you change the cameras then you can buy PoE units

Here is a question about the ground.

I know in a house installation, you will measure the voltage between live and ground

Should this also be the case in this power supply?

Have you checked the power supply by connecting a camera directly to output ? If the same result my guess is “power supply/battery charger” filter problem. It charges the battery, but can’t supply clean filtered DC for users. A cap. problem perhaps.

Camera is of course connected directly to the output.

Result isn't different if battery is connected or not

I meant a camera in hand (with a short wire) , not cameras installed at locations.

What would be the point of that? My cameras are all installed, and are supposed to work at that distance.

There might be some ground confusion here. Ground-1 the mains supply earth. Ground-2 the power supply 0V or 12V negative.

Not all power supplies connect the mains ground to the DC negative. A quick continuity test will show how yours is arranged.

The system can work perfectly without the mains ground and low voltage ground being bonded together.

For a cctv system and its power supply, live to earth at mains is not the important measurement. What matters most is that the low voltage side is all sharing a common ground reference without unwanted voltage differences between them.

The most basic requirement on the mains supply side.

Your DVR metal case should be connected to the protective earth of the mains supply. Your multi channel power supply metal case should also be connected to the protective earth of its mains supply. The two cases should then be at the same earth potential so there should be no significant voltage difference between them.

There's a lot of variables in this situation. You said earlier that cameras will work perfectly with their own 2A adapters. Then later all is ok when the multi channel PSU is operating on battery but not on mains supply.

Yes that is correct. Cameras are working perfectly with individual adapters, or when the power supply is on battery feed. Not if the power supply is connected to the mains.
I have this morning tried with the power supply housing connecting to the ground, in the hope that would improve the interference, but it didn't make a difference

The point is to find that the problem is your power supply or cameras wiring.

If the DVR has its own power adapter then that's another variable in the mix, unless of course the DVR is sharing the same 12V power supply as the cameras.

Summary.

Not sure if all the following is with passive balun or not.

One camera on its own 2A adapter = ok.

One camera on the multi channel power supply with mains on = not ok.

One camera on the multi channel power supply with battery only = ok.

One camera on its own 1A adapter = not ok

Take a decent length of CAT cable attach balun and camera then use this as your test gear.

All cameras are on 2A adapters.

6 cameras get their power through individual power line, camera 7&8 get their power over the LAN.

All cameras work fine.

When I connect camera 7 to the power supply it will have minor interference.

The more cameras I connect to the power supply, the interference worsens.\

By the time I have connected 4 random cameras, the interference on the camera 7&8 is so bad they are unwatchable.

The 2 other cameras will have minor interference at that point.

If I remove the mains from the power supply, all interference disappears as snow for the sun.

I just grounded the DVR case with a separate wire, but that doesn't make a difference

Everything is plugged into 2 grounded extension cords, but the adapters are 2 pin of course.
When I use the power supply, I plug it in the same extension cord

Yes all cameras are with Balun, but only 2 get the power over the Balun

The adapters are NOT grounded, only 2 pin. It works ok

Besides the adapters can go to 2A.

Connected on battery, you do have enough power, Voltage and Amps.

The battery is not grounded and it works.

Devices connected to adapter or any other supply control the amps.

If you use lower power supply in amps and not able to deliver, it can effect working. Device needs let s say 1.5 A and your supply only can do 1 amp. Power, fi Voltage can go down. Working can be effected.

You can measure on end of line, but then you measure open voltage and can be right. However if it is connected and current is used, then you can have a complete different situation and voltage can dip.

Length of cable could effect voltage, to weak and too long wire , voltage can drop significant for device.

You use a supply WITH ground, then it goes wrong. See what it does if you only use 2pin and NO grond.

Housing of supplies can be metal and therefor it needs to be grounded. For safety reasons, if something is wrong and the housing would be under power.

If you dont use the ground, you lift safety. Thats why it is so nice to have RCBO's, protection.

There are supplies which use ground to eliminate interference. But then it has to be "clean" as possible.

Good power supply has also filters and in other cases, ferrite devices are used in cables.

If you have a power supply doing 20-30 Amps, it should be enough for 9 cams.

You suggest I try the power supply with a 2 pin power cord, and also don't ground the housing of the supply? I have RCBO's

The 2 cameras that get the most interference, and get the power over the balun, are the closest to the DVR and power supply. About 10 meters I estimate.

The other cameras are at least double the distance, hence I power feed them over a 2x1.5mm cable. They get minor interference when connected to the supply.

OK Guys, thanks for your advice and suggestions. I have spent another hour in the loft sweating my arse off, and the power supply will go to the rubbish dump, as that is where it belongs.

Tonight, with the infrared active I noticed it even affects cameras that don't get their power from the supply, so obviously it is a piece of crap.

Thanks again, but I'm done with it.
