Pattaya City officers confiscated more than 200 beach chairs and mats during a midnight operation along Pattaya Beach early on 21 July, stepping up action against rental equipment being placed on public land.

The sweep began at 12.30am and covered the beachfront from North Pattaya to South Pattaya. Special Affairs officers from the Peace and Order Division's rapid-response unit joined Pattaya municipal enforcement staff.

The operation was carried out under Pattaya City's policy to regulate the use of public spaces.

Equipment hidden from officers

Officials said several operators tried to avoid having their equipment seized. Some chairs and mats were concealed beneath tarpaulins, while others were loaded onto motorcycle sidecars and parked beside roads.

Other items were found in the backs of pickup trucks. Officers seized more than 200 pieces of equipment, as well as a large quantity of other rental items, and took them to Pattaya City for storage.

Owners can contact the city to request the return of their property under official procedures.

Beach rental warning repeated

Pattaya municipal officers said they had publicised the rules and repeatedly warned operators to stop renting chairs and mats on public areas.

Businesses wishing to offer such equipment must do so from legally compliant private premises, officials said, with customers required to take the equipment for their own use.

The city said inspections and enforcement would continue. It warned that equipment found in breach of the rules would be confiscated every day, saying the aim was to restore order and ensure the beach could be used appropriately by the public.

All these items have already been replaced and will be removed in 10 years when the next raid happens.

Could they possibly work any slower? Working a lot faster would have netted 100x the number they confiscated.

Do People who go to the beach at night want to take mats and chairs from home? Absolutlly not...They want to rent for a few hours at night....

The beach is huge....What's a few chairs and mats on the beach at night....The crackdowns are stupid...

Well that has cleaned up Pattaya in its entirety in one night- I am impressed by the RTP

Those folks are not poor. They conduct business in that highly desirable business area means they’re connected also means they pay big money (mafia, police, city). The second part of your reply just doesn’t make sense.

Do you know how much a beach "concession" on Patong Beach already cost 15 years ago?

Those are not poor people, at least in Phuket those were highly syndicated locals with deep connections and even deeper pockets -- because renting out beach chairs on Patong Beach was better than a money printing machine, raking in literally a million Euros or more (NOT Thai baht!!) a year per concession holder, while basically having no additional investment cost besides the bribes and a few plastic chairs.

As in Phuket, I assume that the beach chairs in Pattaya belong to people paying for a concession to some big name. In this case, he might not have paid enough upwards the chain, or is about to be replaced by somebody wanting in on the game, having sent out the police to clean out the competition. A game endlessly repeating itself, literally since the first day I came to Thailand.

Yep. I worked for a Management Consulting (MC) company in Bkk. All MC companies have big turn over. we recruited, gave fast training and new staff always included in project teams to give them fast real world experience ten clients wold head hunt them. To keep clients happy with good results to the projects then wanted to improve their organizational set up we only recruited just graduated Thai staff, just completed 2 MBAs or similar.

This meant young sons / daughters of hi-so families. and in many cases quite arrogant.

Worst example: Thai girl from very wealthy hi-so family attends interview and gets hired., start date agreed. But she kept delaying her start because of wanting to spend time catching up with old friends she hadn't seen because she was studying overseas.

Finally she confirmed her start date, agreed to be at the office at 09:00 am.

Thai CEO arrived at 07:30 am, went to his office to discover bags of office / consulting suitable and bags of ladies shoes on hs desk.

09:00 new girl not yet seen. Admin Mngr calls her mobile phone several times, no answer. Then calls her house, they don't know where she is and her mother very angry that she was disturbed when she was eating brekfast.

At 10:00 admin Mngr goes down the road just 150 meters to a restaurant / bakery where she buys cakes / donuts / sandwiches every morning for visitors coming to the office for meetings.

Admin Mngr walks into the restaurant / bakery and instantly sees the new girl entertaining 4 or 5 other girls. Admin Mngr approaches her and says quietly 'today is your start day, you should be in the office'. New hi-so girl tells her to go away and stop disturbing her 'party' with her friends.

Admin mngr calls the CEO and shares what's just happened. CEO calls the new girl and tells her to be in his office within 15 minutes. She hangs up then sends an SMS saying 'you (CEO) are very rude to me and how dare you upset my mother.

CEO instantly returns the SMA message with 'your dismissed, remove your clothes and shoes today.

Her driver came late afternon and collected her belongings. Very late afternnon she sent a further SMS to the CEO saying 'nobody can dismiss people from my family, tomorrow I will fly to Hong Kong to go shopping with my mother, I will tell you later when It's convenient for me to start work'.
