Those of us who were around in the ThaiVisa days remember how it used to be a kinder, friendlier place to post. Things started getting nasty for reasons we're not allowed to mention and there was a mass exodus of members to TheThaiger. When Thaiger assimilated ThaiVisa to become the monstrosity it is now, it brought along riffraff who have turned this into a generally hostile environment. I belong to a Facebook group which is primarily like what ThaiVisa used to be. It is moderated fairly and the feedback you get from members is refreshing. Unfortunately, the few alternatives available don't have the membership to make them viable options.

I was a member on another site primeraly in Issan a few members drove it into the ground and more or less finished a good site. They then moved onto thaivisa after they stated it calling it the dark side. They carried there continued the vitriol on there then moved onto the Thaiger same again membership dropped as soon as Bignok appeared. Now him and others have done the same here. Shame realy.

I came across a discussion where he mentioned the idea of exterminating the 0.02%.

Those Pattaya Facebook groups are good but aren't the same as here, they're mainly questions and answers, not long threads of chat you get here. Answers often a few words, couple lines max

If you want to talk about a time when there were really some interesting online exchanges of information about Thailand, you have to go back to the pre-forum days and the era of USENET groups, back in the eighties and early nineties. I remember those interesting Alan Dawson days, when insightful knowledge was shared about a country that there wasn’t much written about yet. Forums came after that, and this one is now tarnished by a few trolls who are permitted to verbally defecate all over the shop. These types would’ve never been tolerated back in the day. There was no place for them. It wasn’t a business back then. The idea of user engagement for commercial purposes hadn’t evolved yet. The main problem on this site has already been hinted at a couple of times here in this thread. As a result, I turn up here very little now.

IMO there have always been toxic individuals on ASEAN and its predecessor. Several are constantly changing their pseudonyms. For them, ignorance and discourtesy are virtues.

I appear to be relatively new to this forum, having only been in Thailand for around three years now.

For me, it's mostly about engagement: I am happy to engage in reasonable threads; I may read but stay silent on the unreasonable ones. In fairness, I haven't always been so disciplined but I've learnt that you can't change a troll so you're wasting your time if you try.

The forum is what we make it. If posters would only talk to others as though they were in front of them in a pub/bar, almost all problems would go overnight.

And if someone posts something unreasonable or toxic, walk away and don't respond. They only thrive if you react, so just don't.

Lastly, I observe that many things in life have cycles. This forum will be no different. There is a genuine desire for all of us to converse, discuss and enquire so it will always be here, and I am reasonably confident it will get good again, as I remember it when I first joined. 🙂

I do agree with your suggestion that the chats on this post have become increasingly hostile. I see that a lot because I am a far-left liberal, and I know there are a lot of far-right (censored) on these forums also.

The fact is that many people just don't like each other and rightly so. That's real life. Some of the most repugnant and repulsive people I have ever come across in my life, I've met right here on this forum.

I remember an acquaintance telling me perhaps twenty years ago, that he stopped posting on ThaiVisa due to the toxicity, so it's nothing new.

You play your part in it and then post as if you are above it all.

What is remarkable is how some individuals feel insulted when they read something that opposes their view point and beliefs especially if they are in error, a correction is not an insult unless the recipient is socially under developed or unwilling to come to terms with their erroneous interpretations and if that’s the case then humorous insertions are applied to the corrections, and when that happens then they tend to get more inflamed. See how that works? Anyway, quite astonishing how some folks do that to themselves.

My 50c is regarding quality of articles going down over time. Some regular posters posting nonesense to a point once I notice the name I click away straightaway. On a related topic I’ve also notice regularly that some article links either are directed to another topic or just not linked at all.
