Koh Tao arrests: Six foreign dive instructors held

There will be some cheap dive shops going to auction for the Thai's to buy.

Honest question... Can an American own a dive shop under the Treaty of Amity?

Not that I'd consider it, especially on Koh Tao. Just curious.

My SCUBA days are behind me. I'd be a hazard on the water and not much more useful running the front end of a shop. I'd make an okay mechanic, tank filler and toilet cleaner, though. I imagine those may be work limited to Thai people, even if I owned the shop? (Note the question mark...)

  • Have any Thais ever been arrested on this island?

  • I agree 1000%.. but they don't see it. Thai people however are excellent in ruining everything.. They can have a good food restaurant but the greed and incompetence makes it is getting worse by using

  • To be honest, I think Thailand has more urgent and bigger problems than foreigners working in jobs "reserved" for Thais.

They have been doing this for many years. Now they arrested 7 out of hundreds. And I bet these 7 were not affiliated with any of the big shops.

There is usually a warning when police leave the mainland for raids, so shop owners often get tipped off. But sometimes they arrive by surprise, after observing the targets for some time, and already have the evidence they need. A decade ago or so, the NSB arrived by surprise and quite stealthily for drug raids.

Foreign dive instructors cannot even carry customers’ air tanks to the boats, so the larger shops need crew to do it, while smaller shops sometimes let customers carry their own tanks.

Honest answer, "the best investment in Thailand is no investment in Thailand." 🙂

Good move.

Occupations reserved for Thai's.

From my experience they use the dive master trainees to do it who aren't being paid, which is fine, instructors won't be doing it unless a tiny outfit

There were some stories quite a few years back about foreigners getting arrested for doing just that.

I was thinking more along the lines of a hobby that paid for itself, at least partially.

A common dive shop trick was to let long term stayers pretend to be customers, while in reality they were working.

You need a work permit to even do volunteer work in Thailand.

I figured that I'd get me one of those if I owned a dive shop with a dozen Thai employees or so.

They are getting DTVs under "soft power" cooking schools. Giving a five year visa for a cooking school is nuts. Even the Cordon Blue school only has nine month long programs. What did the government think these people were going to do with that dodgy visa?

Everyone knows its a visa that is being abused. It's been deliberately designed in an underhand way to evade scrutiny, but there is a suspicion it may well been deliberately have been designed this way. The checks and balances are not there. But there is enough ambiguity in it that the Thai population are not aware of what is going on - back door open immigration.

Property developers love it and want it to fill up their condos.

It seems as if they are the ones pushing the border policy of the country - especially under the previous regime.

Spare yourself the grief. Make your money elsewhere, and just spend it in Thailand.

It's possible this is stage 1 in getting rid of the farang "owned" shops so the thais have full control

Good for Thailand. I wish the UK government had clamped down on foreigners taking over the country. Alas it's a bit too late now.

There is plenty of foreign investment in Thailand. What they try to do is protect local citizens who are earning around 400 baht a day from being taken over or unfair practises. Most developing countries have protectionist policies in place.

Which foreigners taking over UK business and what field do you dislike ?

Thai already have full control on koh tao, same as phi phi. All run by a few Thai families.

It is Thailand after all. What a strange post.
