My uncle was Jewish, the first girl I kissed was Jewish, carried my Jewish pals chair at his wedding in Golders Green, I banged my female Jewish boss (and didn't get sacked), and I used to go on holiday in Israel.

Don't forget you also wore a Kipper on your head :)

More and more people are realizing that the governing parties of recent decades have failed and have been unable to solve a single problem.

If you really followed what AfD want's to solve - it's nothing. They play - like in the US and UK - the "anger card - we against them up there. They are confirmed right-wing extremist.

It's tragic that the voters in Saxony-Anhalt and former East-Germany aren't able to understand what they voted for.

They will get what they voted for. And it's not getting better for them. Just like in 1933, as NSDAP's seizure of power began.

But as I can read here by a few neo-nazis - they call themselves conservatives- hurray hurray - let us glorify the Nazi regime again.

It's quite simple really. Once you go too far toward either extreme you unwittingly sow the seeds of the opposite to grow because the far-left or far-right only ultimately offers failure. People become desperate and see it all going wrong, so decide something resembling a major correction is needed to the opposite, but that's wrong and history has constantly proven this to be the case.

You also have a constanly disillusioned youth every generation wanting change because they are constantly being screwed over too... which means they rebel easily.

The answers are in the middle, and to be honest, whether you should be center-left or center-right depends on the topic, and different issues require different approaches... it's a beguiling myth that one side or the other offers the elusive answers to everything, but a powerful one.

For example, when it comes to things like quality free health and welfare services for those citizens who need it or civil rights and freedoms, then we should be approaching those sort of things from the liberal perspective... however, you need a robust economy to pay for it and strong emergency services/police and armed forces to protect it and your society, which comes from the center-right. You need balance as not all topics require the same style of thinking to succeed.

Really, well-functioning countries have a mix of both sides depending on the topic/issue. You have to have compassion where fair and just, but also strength and will to protect it and do what's right for you people... otherwise you end up in the toilet, which is where Europe has essentually gone through falling foul of this.

Trouble is, the longer you let it fester and worsen, the stronger the medine needed to fix it and put things back on track... hence rebellions, revolutions, sudden political realignments, or civil unrest happen.

Politicians are spineless and just kick the can down the road, mainly because their terms in power are too short to really fix things, so why bother? Just ride the gravy power train and go down as a footnote in history instead of making hard decisions people want results on. Something is going to have to give at some point and it could be messy... people are becoming increasingly annoyed with what's happening.

I disagree, but be that as it may, the facts of the election results speak for themselves. It is the nature of democracy that political majorities can change and governments can be voted out of office by the people. Clearly, many voters want the implementation of the measures promised by the AfD. (A curious fact: At the ballot box, the AfD received over 50% of the vote, while apparently their success in postal voting was, strangely enough, only around 20% – Ein Schelm wer Böses dabei denkt)

If they come to power (in my opinion, only a matter of time), they will have to prove that they have the courage and the ability to achieve their goals and deliver on their promises.

If not, they will lose the voters again. That is perfectly normal in a functioning democracy.

I think they have benefited greatly so far from the "Brandmauer" and their role in opposition under incompetent governments.

While I broadly agree with you, I don't remember the current (or other recent) German government being far-left.

I think the main reason for the rise of the far-right is that it hasn't been in power before. People think that the center-left or center-right did not provide good enough results, and want to have a try at something else. The far-right (or the far-left) will likely also not satisfy voters and will eventually be voted out like the other parties, as happened in Austria. A notable exception being Meloni, but she significantly watered down her initial stance (her economic adviser is Draghi and she was happy to get a loan from the EU).

After "reunification" several little mistakes were made.

To convert the eastern currency 1:1 to the Deutsche Mark was the root of all problems. Leaving former DDR states unable to economically compete internationally.

To integrate the new "Bundeslaender" the "Treuhand" was formed. Opening the door for West German "robber barons", descending like locust on the new Bundeslaender. Plundering what was valueable, leaving the new Bundeslaender as an industrial skeleton behind. The urge to seriously invest there by West Germans was never high on the agenda.

So, the ex DDR has never recovered from this raid. Eternal economic depression as a result.

What made Hitler great? The economic depression in the wake of 1929.

And now, everybody is wondering why the AFD has become so strong.

Whilst your post does have merit, I think it goes back to Merkel (and you are right, she/the CDU wasn't technically far-left, but often acted like it) and her unusually long tenure of power caused the usual poor judgements and assumptions, and when that happens with a few ill-thought-through disasterous decisions... especially the one where she hubritically opened the door to over a million undocumented migrants with no screening and just said "We can do it" with the effects only being realised long after she left power... history will judge her harshly on that one sentence. It goes back to her and a completely niave idea, which Germany is paying dearly now for.

I know they wanted immigration to fix their economy and demographic problem, but there are better ways to do this than just fling the doors open and accept anyone and everyone from the all the basket cases of the world... what could go wrong?

You reap what you sow, I'm afraid... and she didn't consider the reprecussions later down the road, which are all too clear now.

People in general now are much more ready to grab their pitchfork and go out shouting and making themselves felt than before because so much is wrong. Politicians have to acknowledge that and find answers to placate the voting public and make things better, as that is their purpose... but they often seem to have forgotten this.

Get out of the EU, get rid of the euro and stop supporting Ukraine. This is one of the main topics Alice Weidel, leader of the AfD, supports then re-establish German sovereignty over its borders.

If she succeeds, it will be the end of the EU because Germany is one of the main contributor to the EU budget. It will show the path for other right wing parties in Denmark, Netherlands, France, Italy and some other Eastern European countries like Hungary, Slovakia and Romania .

Thank you for the explanation.

It may have a little to do with unbridled, unrestrained migration policies as well.

Yes indeed, I forgot to mention this factor. Especially if the migrants show little interest of learning the language and have no marketable skills.

In Germany, the market for oriental "sheep herders" is saturated.

Shame they fell short of an overall majority.

Long may this trend continue. People are sick of seeing their countries destroyed by inane leftist policies.

The thick plottens.... Apparently AfD did have a majority of those voting in person. But some really odd mail in voting reduced it to 44%. Every other party had more mail in votes than in person votes.

Doesn't surprise me.

I'm waiting for all the leaders to be banned from politics for 10 years for dropping litter, or something.

And as usual, it's a ridiculous claim because AfD was the number one! 😃

I agree. It's tragic that VW is laying off 100K people and shutting a down factory for the first time in over 80 years. And that's just the tip of the iceberg.

I don't equate the AfD with the NSDAP, but history seems to be rhyming here, if not repeating.

Another successful western society collapsing because they're being surpassed by the Chinese and the burden of supporting "poor geography" (Greece) and to a lesser extent Italy and Spain in the EU, not to mention the fear and shame of the natives who think supporting Russia is going to make them richer? OMG. You guys are full of sausage. Morons. The far right isn't going to help you in the long run.

Just looking at AfD and CDU, how do you account for the difference in the ratio of mail-in versus in-person voting?

I doubt that it's because the CDU voters are too lazy to show up on the day. I'm curious, aren't you?

It's the same in other landers, including where the AfD is weak and has no chance to win an election. In 2025, 37% of voters voted by mail in Germany.

Are you suggesting without any evidence that the Land government rigged the election? 😀

Saxony-Anhalt does not have a Volkswagen automobile plant.

The language of the AfD uses in many ways the same words like the NSDAP did, deliberately employs charged buzzwords and combative terms to delegitimize political opponents, stir up emotions such as anger, and shift the discourse to the right.

Remigration: A term originating from the New Right that the AfD uses to call for the mass repatriation or deportation of people with a migration background.

Überfremdung: (excessive influx of foreigners): Describes a fear-laden notion of the German population undergoing change due to immigration.

Umvolkung: (demographic replacement): A term with a historically charged past, suggesting that the replacement of the native population through immigration is a deliberate political objective.

Björn Höcke is the defining figure of the AfD. You can call him a fascist and you can call him a Nazi.

If a party's defining figure is a Nazi, then it is a Nazi party.

The irony being that Saxony‑Anhalt faces a serious demographic crisis. It needs a lot of immigrants in order to maintain its population and GDP levels. 😀

Saxony‑Anhalt is one of the fastest‑shrinking regions in Germany.Since reunification, the state has lost ~700,000 residents (≈25% of its population). The population is projected to fall from 2.15 million (2022) to 1.83 million (2040), a 15% decline. Nearly all municipalities are shrinking, especially rural areas.

https://www.demografie-portal.de/DE/Bund-Laender/Sachsen-Anhalt/demografische-entwicklung.html

It faces shrinking population, rapid aging, low birth rates, and continued out‑migration.

These trends are expected to continue for decades.

On top of it (for our RW posters who usually advocate for a decrease in social expenses), it is one of the largest main recipient of social subsidies. The federal government transfered €3.2 billon in 2025 to Saxony Anhalt, around 21% of the Land's budget.
