FWIW, here's the outcome:

There was a Hat Yai to Sadao minibus from the Bor Kor Sor at Hat Yai for 50 baht that got there in a little over an hour despite a few deliveries along the way. Thai immigration exit was about 700m walk before Malaysia entry, and the minibus back left from in front of the 7-11 about 100m from the border. I wasn't asked for proof of funds, and it was all pleasingly straightforward.
