Problem Re-installing Garmin Mapsource

Recommended Posts

Been using the Garmin Mapsource on my computer for months now with no problems. Yesterday I opened the program and the message; ' There is a problem with the map source registry, please re-install map source and start it again".

Well this I have done several times and the message always re-appears and program will not open. I have tried system restore on the pc and this does not help. Any one any ideas please?

I have heard that there some problems with the Asian Version. But I've not heard that anybody would have problems after using it for a while.

Are you using original software? :o

Anyway, If you do not find solution and live somewhere close to Chiang Mai, PM me so I will try to help. :D

I am using the trip and waypoint manager that came with the unit, and the world map, can't get it to re-install. Searching for possible conflicts but I have restored to when I know everything was fine but to no avail.

I'm down in Pattaya, little too far from CM, but thanks.

Have you installed any updated maps? My computer installs the map software on C drive/Garmin. I installed the latest Rotweiler Thailand map over the top of the older version and got a similar message. I ended up un installing the Thailand map and then re installing the latest version. There was no problem with Map Source program even though the message was to re install the program.

I had the world basemap loaded with my trip and waypoint manager, downloaded a map from rotweiler, this seemed to cause the problem, took it back off as I thought it was the offending item but then back to the same message.

If you have recently loaded a new map and the registry for that map is not configured properly you will get this error message. As I recall I had to go in and delete the registry for the new map program and reinstall Map Source. I later had to manually configure the registry entry for my new maps.

You may also try downloading the latest version of MapSource from the Garmin download site if you already have mapsource installed. Hope this helps.

Spoke to Garmin and they suggested downloading their update, done that but the message has changed from a problem of the registry to a problem with the installation.

My skills aren't quite up to playing around in the registry but cheers anyway.

I also get nervous playing with the registry. I bought a program called Registry Mechanic that cleans up problems. Whenever I delete programs or make changes I run the program. There are a lot of free registry cleaners available but I bought mine.

Ok, got it fixed now. After some simple straight forward instructions from Garmin ,I delved into the registry after a dry run and all is ok. Below is the response from Garmin for my problem, hope it helps anyone else who may experience the same problem.

I think you said you had Vista so please try these instructions instead.

If you have XP you should still be able to follow them.

Reinstall the mapping and delete the registry keys from your system.

WARNING: Please be aware that when in the registry you must not touch any other keys or folders in the registry other than the ones stated below. Doing so could cause damage to computers operating system, potentially rendering it unusable. I would advice contacting an administrator for assistance if you are unsure with the instructions.

1. Uninstall MapSource using the Windows Add/Remove Program utility found in Control Panel. Windows vista select control panel

home>programs>uninstall a programme.

2. Go to Registry Editor (found in Run by typing regedit then pressing

OK.

Windows vista select the windows logo(bottom left) and type "regedit"

without the quotes in the start search option box. Remove the GARMIN

keys found under the software key in both HKEY Current Users and HKEY

Local Machine (may not be in HKEY Local Machine but still check) (in my case it was)

3. Re-boot computer letting harddrive(s) completely shutdown and then

manual turn the computer back on after 30 secs.

4. Reinstall MapSource to a new directory on the harddrive (i.e.,

c:\mapsource)

5. Repeat step 3.

6. Install current MapSource update, available for download from the

Support section of our website v6.13.4 http://www8.garmin.com/support/download_details.jsp?id=209

7. Re-boot computer letting harddrive(s) completely shutdown and then

manual turn the computer back on after 30 secs.

8. Run MapSource!
