What Vista For Laptop?

Featured Replies

Hi,

I plan to buy a new laptop in Bkk and would like to know where (Panthip, Fortune, Laksi) one gets what version of Vista. What is the most reliable version for normal use? (mainly report writing)

Does Vista here come with a nag-screen?

I would look for min Vista Business but better Vista Ultimate and refuse any Home version! The Home versions having some Limitations special in the Network. The advantage of Ultimate is that you can choose between 39 different languages and install more than one at same system. This is usefull if you work in deferent Languages and need the native Layouts and Dictionaries.

If getting a single core Celeron machine I'd suggest Vista Basic. Dual core machines will depend on your intentions with it. Unless you plan to run it under a domain or need bitlocker encryption, I'd recommend Vista Home Premium which gives you a good media centre, and Aero graphics. "Ultimate" isn't worth the extra money in many people's opinions, including mine.

Have a look at the comparisons between versions:

Keep in mind that you can upgrade from Basic to Home Premium, Business, or Ultimate, and from Home Premium or Business to Ultimate at anytime, so no need to go too expensive at first. Running Business or Ultimate for home use is a waste of money IMO.

As I wrote, the limitation in Network is something I can't accept because I need the full Network capabilities. And if you need to work in different Languages, than Ultimate is the only one.

But that's for me and may differs a lot from your requirements!

If you just use an Laptop even at home maybe Home Premium is ok, for you! But I believe if you just go for Basic as cndvic suggest, you'll need to update very shortly!

Better you look directly for an Laptop with Vista Business or if you can get: Ultimate!

I although would go for an Core2 Duo or similar with min 1 GB memory, better 2 GB! HDD should be SATA!

Acer has just some promotions may check them out, they starting by THB ~20,000

Personally I hate Vista in my view Vista is the same to Windows 2000 as Windows Me was to Windows 98.

If you want Vista and you are home user - please use Vista Home Premium as this edition has the new Aero interface and comes with Media Center. Home Basic is a very bad edition lot's of things are removed and business editions are geared towards enterprises now Media Center but you have lots of enterprise functions. Ultimate edition contains everything however much more resources intense (in default configuration) as lots of services are enabled.

See attached.

No problems with multi-lingual operations in Home Premium.

That's right on one hand but on the other hand in Home Premium you can't change the the Windows Layout to an different language with even the dictionaries!

That is exactly what is the main advantage of Ultimate! working in different Languages even with the Layout of that language you just use. VCery helpfull in Countries like Thailand or China or example if the user even don't have a basic knowledge of english!

Anyway it's really depend on what you need the Laptop for, for what kind of working pp!

It's just from my point of view and for what I need a Laptop.

I work in several different languages and the Layout for the native language I use helps me alot, plus the dictionaries! And I need the full Network command! For me it's Ultimate only which full fills my requirement!

Thanks. I will need the laptop for working. And yes! I'll need different languages with different alphabets.

@cdnvic: link did not work, unfortunately.

What about the nag-screen? Does one get the real thing nowadays? (I noted your reference to different prices...)

What nag screen?

My XP-laptop, purchased in Panthip showed one saying like: you seem to be a victim of software counterfeiting (or similar). Some friends got "Your copy of XXXX does not seem to be genuine".... I got rid of mine by deleting it from the registry, but would not know how to do it in Vista.

The two version that you should consider are Ultimate and Enterprise.

my laptop, with a genuine version of XP, ( bought in the UK).crashed....when i tried to reinstall XP, using the original disk, it would not. I got a pirated copy, and used that......then kept getting the nag screen, which asks the user to " click here to resolve this"....that done...i explained to microshaft what had happened...but they refused to authenticate the pirated version, telling me to buy another one...this i ignored, and then, after about four or five days.....the blue screen was all I could get.....total wipeout.

I then installed Linux..Ubuntu 5....am now using Ubuntu 7...and am very happy with it....try it and see.....and as a bonus there are thousands of applications available for download....free !! it runs beautifully......

Don't go any higher than Vista Business - Ultimate isn't worth the extra money (I have both).

Why didn't you just use the COA (Certificate of Authenticity) from the original when you installed the copy? It doesn't matter what disk you install from, so long as you use the same version as indicated on the COA the license is valid.
