Connection Problems, Is True Telling The Truth?

I'm using True, I can connect for about 5 - 10 mins, then the it stops running, although I'm still connected.

If I disconnect it will not reconnect unless I turn my modem on and off.

True customer service says it's my computer or modem. About 10 days ago they said they were updating their software (or something like that) and it would be OK in a few days. It did seem to improve, but now is worse than ever.

Could it be my computer? I run Zone Alarm for firewall and anti-virus/spyware, which is scanned daily. I've done everything they suggest but nothing helps.

It looks like that the problem is your modem! May you just go to an computershop and buy a new modem (in case your existing one is out of warranty). If your Modem is from TRUE buy a new one anyway but not one from TRUE because the TRUE Modems having a modified firmware.

Not sure if this will help you but many many years ago when DSL technology first came out in Canada, I signed up for it and it was a complete mess from the start. A 1 Meg connection would not connect any higher than 384K. I constantly lost connection, especially when phone calls came in. Sometimes i went days without the modem being able to Synch.

The problem was never actually fixed, but it was narrowed down to the wiring in the house being so old, a complete re-wiring was required. But by that time Cable internet was available and i never looked back.

Anyhow, one thing I did find that helped a lot with the disconnections was installing the proper filters. I'm not sure how big a factor that plays now, but back then i needed to install filters for every phone that was connected to the same line. And if it was a cordless phone i needed a cordless filter.

Are you running torrents by any chance? Modems are not keen on them (all those connections to keep track of) and mine (SMC) would not last more than an hour until updated firmware to latest version (but probably still have to do a hard reset every other day on average).

If not can you check your signal to noise ration on your modem? If that is not good (20-30db believe is good) you might try changing wires/filter and such. I had a good looking 2 meter phone line that was dropping me below 10db and never got more than 450 from 512 line - after replacement full 512 is normal and usually 25db or more SN.
