For me it gives an error message speculating that YouTube is down even though it is not. Any ideas?

The home page also links to some supplemental programs but does not make it clear whether these are required to make it work on my XP Windows machine.

http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=36...h&plindex=0 is a great video if you like stunt car driving.

Would love to try it, but have not been able to access the youtube website ever since I got ToT IPStar

All I get is a:

The connection was reset

The connection to the server was reset while the page was loading.

Using firefox, but i do not get there in IE either...

An alternative is keepvid.com which works with YouTube and Google videos. The downloaded flv file then can be played in VLC media player (VideoLan) which is free.

Nope, could not use that as well.

In Google videos I can search for the videos, but they are actually stored on youtube, and since I do not have access to youtube I can of course not download anything from them.

But others may of course hav no problem. I guess this is ToT blocking access without telling. Since I do not get the "offending" website blurb....

There is a simple plugin for Firefox called Fast Video Download which allows you to download videos from the popular places pretty easily. It's very simple to use.

The download from YouTube is actually an MPEG-4 video. VLC media player does not play it. I believe your advice is wrong!

Ummmm.....I use VLC to play my YouTube videos with no problems. VLC is a great free, all purpose media player.

I use Vixy.net quite a lot to download classical music vids from YouTube. At times it is not that easy to get through e.g. server busy, unable to find file, but perseverance is called for and in the end I get what I want. It is a free Japanese site and I guess that they are underfunded but what the hel_l. After downloading the AVI file I put it through Zamzar to get a version in MP3 format which is then written to CD.

VLC player, like media player classic and zoom player, are *just* players. They will not play a format if the correct codec isn't installed. If it *is* installed (and configured properly), then these players will play the file. The normal media player (not classic) included with windows will also do this, but with a few caveats. If you want codecs, get one of the many codec packs (like K-lite).

I have a clean (virgin) install of XP, no additional codecs added, no additional media players such as PowerDVD installed, no other software at all installed - only VLC and the standard Windows Media player. The flv file plays in VLC fine. VLC has it's own internal codec support. The advice is correct.

1 - Download Internet Download Manager (IDM)

1 - Connect to YouTube

2 - Find the Video

3 - Right Click anywhere on the page (not on the video area) and select 'Download FLV'

4 - Convert with Total Video Converter to any format you want.

Finshed!

Oh, the files on YouTube are NOT MPEG-4, they are Flash.

Correct, FLV stands for Flash Video.

"Flash Video is viewable on most operating systems, via the widely available Adobe Flash Player and web browser plugin, or one of several third-party programs such as MPlayer, VLC media player, Quicktime, or any player which uses DirectShow filters (such as Media Player Classic, Windows Media Player, and Windows Media Center) when the ffdshow filter is installed."

My advice is to install Zoomplayer who can read a lot of media formats. Zoomplayer standard

Download page and specs

Zoom Player is capable of playing all common media formats and quite a few of the not so common, including:

AVI, Matroska (MKV), QuickTime (MOV), Cellphone 3GPP (3GP), Flash (SWF), RealMedia (RA/RM/RMVB/RAM), Windows Media Format (ASF/WMV/WMA including DRM with WMV Professional version), OGG Movie (OGM), MPEG-1 (MPG/VCD), MPEG-2 (MPG/SVCD/VOB), MPEG-4 (DIVX/XVID/ISO), VP3-VP6, MPEG Layer 3 (MP3), Vorbis Audio (OGG), Dolby Digital (AC3), Advanced Audio Coding (AAC), MusePack Audio (MPC), FLAC Audio (FLAC), OptimFROG Audio, Monkey Audio (APE), True Audio (TTU), Wave Audio (WAV), CD-Audio.

A great software.

I used to have about 6 different video downloaders installed in my Firefox - couldn't decide which one was best. I've now removed them all except for "Video Download Helper".

Agreed. My VLC player players .flv files from Youtube OK. But what it doesn't do is allow you to change the playback position either by clicking on the progress bar at the bottom or by dragging the pointer. The player always resets to the beginning of the file when I do this. The "double speed" button works, but there is no way to get back to normal speed once you have clicked it.

As for Windows Media Player, I have never got it to play .flv files. If anyone has, I'm sure lots of people would be interested to know how. :o

The only useful piece of information I have gleaned from this thread is the Keepvid site which does actually save the YouTube clip, unlike Vixy. Under Properties > Type of File, the file saved is 'MP4 File' format -- nothing about Flash or flv. The file name is 9380edca75e2addb[1].wmv. VLC Media Player does not play it, nor does Windows Media Player nor Power DVD nor Quick Time.

Therefore, in simple terms, can anyone put me out of my misery and please tell me how to play (without the need to pay for a commercial program) the 2.17 MB 'MP4' file 9380edca75e2addb[1].wmv which Keepvid has kindly downloaded for me, whatever the format stated? Thank you.

I apologize for misinterpreting your download. I assumed that all downloads from youtube/google were flv formats. Just now see that keepvid downloads that video as .wmv.mp4 and google download uses just .mp4. VLC will play mp4 videos fine, I suspect it may be a corrupted or incomplete download. What is the file size of the video you downloaded, it shows as 11MB. Been having troubles getting it to download completely myself. Just tried the download again, and again it stops incomplete.

VLC downloads and installs but will not play my MP4/.wmv YouTube clip. It seems to be corrupted as none of the functions seem to work. I experienced this exact same nonsense when I tried it a year ago. I am surprised the learned members here recommend a program which is such a pile of sh*t.

Well it isn't rocket science to wish to save and play a YouTube clip; there must be millions of other users trying to do exactly the same. Does YouTube not offer any method of saving to disk and playing, or would that be against their interests?

So finally, can anyone recommend a free player for my MP4/.wmv clip? Or a free converter to change it to .avi or something that Windows Media Player recognises? Thanks again.

One to add to the list:

VDownloader

Saves as AVI or MPG. Works for me.

This is another piece of cr*p software like Vixy. I key in the valid URL of the YouTube clip and get: HTTP/1.1 404 Not Found. Stick to keepvid.com .

Hi..

Is that a valid you tube link to download as genreally they are something like this

I've proposed in posts #17 and #22 a free player that can do it. Download, install and test-it, as simple as this.

There is nothing wrong with VLC (and mp4 is supported by it) or else countless forums and sites wouldn't recommend it, nor would I. Zoom works fine also, I just don't like it adding additional plugins to my system. The problem is highly likely an incomplete download and again ask the OP what was the file size that was downloaded compared to what the site says it is. I tried a dozen times to download it and each time it appeared to download correctly but on disk the file size was too small. Should be 11 MB, if not - nothing will play it successfully.

We are trying to help you Trevor, but your frustration is not making it easy.
