New Car Free Insurance?

Featured Replies

I have just bought a new pickup from Toyota. All the contract is in Thai, which is fair enough, gf helps out with that part. Anyway, I was very concerned about insurance and the salesperson said that the first year is free from Toyota. Took a bit to convince me of this, but eventually gf pointed out a line in the contract and said this was for "insurance number 1". Only thing is that the cost was put down as 10,000 baht, which seems rather low to me, especially as I see similar vehicles in ThaiVisa threads costing 20K-23K for renewal insurance. I would prefer to buy it myself if it is too low for decent cover.

Is this figure arrived at for any particular reason I should know about, or is this correct? Anyone else bought new recently who could advise.

One thing which was also strange(to me only) was that I was never asked one question about driving licences, etc. all the normal things one would expect before getting insurance at home. Is this usual?

yes they give you free no1 insurance ......except its not free, they already added it to the price you paid for the pickup, its just another way they all make money...they done a deal with certain insurance company and get a nice commission on it....also insurance is done here more on value of car specifically rather than age, experience etc so you will find when you come to insure next yr that will be 20k plus.as to your licence...when you have a claim then all that will be checked and if they can find anything to wriggle out of paying then they will untill then they couldnt care less if you have even driven a car before.your in thailand now bud,get used to it. :o

Yes first year insurance is free if you take up their offer. If you dont haggle for a cheaper price.

10k does seem very cheap. I would be concerned about the level of cover for that amount.

Last year I bought a new pickup and the dealer listed insurance at 15k.

This year the renewal was about 17k but reading the details the cover was significantly better.

In my experience ( a bad one ) you are far better seeking out the best insurers available who have a record of looking after their customers.

The car dealers used them and offered what appeared to be good insurance and you,d have thoguht as i did they were top notch.

Al i can say is they went bust, but not before they got my renewal subscription.

I found out later the insurance compamies ethics had been questionale and had been for at 3 years previous to them going bust.

Not paying for repairs ect. and the dealers knew this, so <deleted> did they continue supporting them.

Please no observations on this are needed as my comment is an irony induced one.

How much you pay does have an influence on what you get out of it as in all situations of course.

On the advice of a local employee i went to the Gov. offices and was provided with a list of insurers considered legit and then asked around among the community for their recommendations from it.

People who i consider reliable and would possibly use them.

If it,s cheap you are / should be, immediately alerted to the end result and what you are covered for should you be unfortunate enough to call upon it.

My pick up is now 3.5 years old and my annual cover is just over 15,000 baht and for what it covers me for i am more than satisfied.

I do know of several claimants who have benefitted from this type of insurance / Co. and the local rep. is very helpful at all times.

P.S.

I am not allowed to advertise so cannot name them unfortunately

Saved (?) 20k baht off my new car and Thai Visa insurance covered it for 17k - 3k in pocket :o

The 1 year free insurance i got with my two Toyota's was excellent!! No complains at all.

I've had a few accidents with the Fortuner last year and they paid for it all.

Once tree fell on my car and had quite a lot of damage to the roof.

Once moterbike bumped into my side-mirror and it broke.

Once they stole my spare tyre.. Paid for this to.

I believe the company's name is Thanchanarat.

My "free" insurance was quoted at about 18k on the D-Max. I upped the % of cover from 80% which is standard. I suggest you do the same.

Mine is with Thanachart, who also has the loan on the pick up. It came free. It was part of the promotion they had running. Other models did not have free insurance.

I think I sorta saved about 20k for the first year.

I agree with marshbags post. When I bought my Toyota, I recieved 1 yrs 'free' insurance. Someone ran into the back of me, Two repair shop's would not deal with the company because they were so bad.

I ended up changing my insurance company and I am still, after 8 months, trying to get a promised 10,000 baht refund from the first company.

am in OZ for christmas and new year, will revert soon as I get back, thanks for everyone who replied

As several members have said – there is no free insurance – you are paying for it. Now, whether it is with a good reputable company or not is down to the dealer/garage you are buying it from i.e. they will sell one who gives the highest commission not who necessarily gives the best service. After all, if there is a problem with the insurance company in 6 or 9 months, or whenever, what are you going to do – complain to the dealer ……………. ?

Remember, always go though a Broker – no more money but you do get help in times of problems.
