Govt hopes to send first Thai into space

BANGKOK: -- The Ministry of Information and Communications Technology (ICT) announced yesterday that it was launching round-table discussions aimed at developing the nation's space operations, with the eventual aim of sending Thailand's first astronaut up into space within the next ten years.

Mr. Kraisorn Pornsutee, Deputy Permanent Secretary for ICT, said that the ministry's 10-year plan would focus on the development of both technology and personnel.

The ministry, which hopes to see Thai astronauts participating in international space missions, will also propose the establishment of the National Space Operations Development Committee, to be chaired by the country's prime minister.

The committee, if established, would determine the framework of the nation's space operations, as well as liaise with international space agencies.

Members of the committee would be drawn from a variety of bodies, including the Ministries of ICT, Defence, Agriculture and Cooperatives, Science and Technology, and Foreign Affairs.

.

The committee's work would include the amendment of legislation to facilitate Thai space operations at home and abroad.

Space Operations ................. at HOME and ABROAD?

This might mean land-based centers, but it sure sounds funny.

Why would Thailand have space centers in other countries unless

the other countries were going to be the ones doing the work?

Then again, even Saudi Arabia has sent one of its men into space.. aboard a

US space shuttle. To read the Saudi papers, the operation would not have

been completed without the efforts and skills of the Saudi prince.

It was known as the "DOn't touch That Mission" to those of us in Saudi, ]

because every time the Saudi touched something, the other astronauts

said to him, "Don't touch that."

AND

Another way for the PM to make it look like he is responsible for bringing

Thailand up the ladder from 3rd world to first world.

Should we hold a contest to determine what Thailand would become the hub of should they actually manage to place an astronaut in space?  :D

Following the launch, if it ever happens, Thailand will become the hub of all future space exploration, true, it's in notes I saw from a cabinet meeting by way of the head waiter.... :o

Oh typical of Thai people to dream since they are so light footed now on earth, and spacey to boot. Let alone try to sponsor the Olympics, now add this to their wish list.

They cannot even solve their own traffic problems, so how can they solve space problems??????

Besides they do not even have the cash alone to even build such program, and right now they are what something like 45 years behind in the space race.

Whewwwwwwwww.

Daveyo :o

I nominate Thaksin for first Thaistronaut, to explore the universe, right now. That should keep him quiet for quite a while.

Absolutely, what I wanted to say, you beat me to it. :o

Let me add, the first should be a one-way trip.

I wonder how a Thaistronaut is going to develop skills requiring an independence of thought... How can you teach someone by rote, what to do in a situation that hasn't been planned for.. can see it now

"where's the phillips head screw driver Somchai?"

"Mai roo krub" or "arai nah?"

LOL at Taksin...big mouth..small brain..

Or the cock roaches (malang sap) really will take over!

Are you referring (or is that reefering) to the kind you smoke or the kind you smoke out of the house?

Anyway, there seems to be a hint of patronizing, racist strain in some of these replies. I don't see why it should be so impossible for a Thai to get to space. Didn't someone pay the Russians to get up there just recently? And wasn't Christa McAuliffe - may she rest in peace - just a high school teacher? Oh yeah ... I forgot ... they were both Americans.

All it takes is a US graduate in EE of Thai ancestry. I am sure the US would love to stroke the Thai ego and at the same time cement the friendship that is very necessary for peace in the region and the worldwide war against terrorism.

In fact, I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if the Thai government was promised just such a project for their cooperation in Iraq.

I hesitated following the link to this thread knowing that it would be filled with people falling over themselves to demean and belittle Thailand.

As usual, it is.

Politically, it makes some sense for a Thai to be included on a flight to the international space station. There are a lot of factors involved according to what I've read, but I wouldn't be surprised if it happened.

Much that has been quoted here as examples of Thai failure to follow through are things that were mentioned as "possibilities" by central politicians and seized upon by local polilitians hoping for funding -- of course, that never happens in the West. Nor are policies ever created in the West that do not get serious funding.

Everything that is muted by politicians or discussed in newspapers becomes a well-funded reality in the West. That must be true, given the comments in here.

these jerks are really going crazy! what about making Thailand a clean safe environmently great place to live and grow for the next 3000 years? Get your priorites straight! Or the cock roaches (malang sap) really will take over!

Too true! Why not spend the money on:

1. burying electricity cables underground

2. covering open sewers

3. resurfacing pot-holed roads

4. employing more policemen/women

5. testing vehicle exhaust emissions

I think a Thai astronaut would be as big a waste of money as the "Millenium Dome" was in London.

I second the nomination that "the head waiter" be the first Thai to be sent into space.

That way if he did not come back there would be no great loss :o
