4th ASEAN Para Games 2007

The 4th ASEAN Para Games 2007 will be held from January 20th to 26th, 2008 at the northeastern province of Nakhon Ratchasima.

One of the 11 country members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, or ASEAN, will be randomly selected to host the ASEAN Para Games biannually following the Southeast Asian Games, or SEA Games.11 ASEAN country members include Thailand, Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Timor Leste and Vietnam.

At the 4th ASEAN Para Games 2007, athletes with mental disabilities, spinal cord injuries, visual impairment, cerebral palsy and limb amputations in Southeast Asia will contend in 14 types of sporting events, namely track and field, swimming, bow, badminton, shooting, goalball, table tennis, judo, weightlifting, international chess, boccia, wheelchair fencing, wheelchair basketball and wheelchair tennis. 651 male athletes, 266 female athletes and 465 related officials will take part in this international event. 686 gold medals are up for grabs.

Sporting events will mostly be held at His Majesty the King’s 80th Birthday Anniversary Stadium in Nakhon Ratchasima province. Stadiums at Suranaree University of Technology, Vongchavalitkul University and Rajamangala University will also be used by ASEAN Para Games’ athletes during this period.

PM to preside over opening ceremony of ASEAN Para Games 2007 this Sunday

The Prime Minister and Interior Minister, Gen. Surayud Chulanont (สุรยุทธ์ จุลานนท์), will preside over the opening ceremony of the 4th ASEAN Para Games 2007 at His Majesty the King’s 80th Birthday Anniversary Stadium in the northeastern province of Nakhon Ratchasima on January 20th, 2008.

The opening ceremony will consist of three acts. The first act will stage a presentation on His Majesty the King’s virtues. The theme of the second show will focus of friendship, equality and opportunity, while the third performance will be about the pride of sports. Thailand's Channel 11 will televise the opening ceremony of the 4th ASEAN Para Games 2007 live this Sunday, starting from 4:00 PM onwards.

As for the event’s closing ceremony, it will be held on January 26th at His Majesty the King’s 80th Birthday Anniversary Stadium, and the Tourism and Sports Minister, Dr. Suvit Yodmani (สุวิทย์ ยอดมณี), will preside over this ceremony.

Once the 4th ASEAN Para Games 2007 takes off, Thailand's Channel 11 will air five sporting competitions live for two hours everyday. The five sporting competitions include swimming, badminton, wheel-chair basketball, wheel-chair tennis, and track and field.

Police provide security for Para Games athletes

Officers from many units cooperate in providing security at the athletes’ village of the 4th Asian Para Games at Nakhon Ratchasima province.

Deputy Commander of the Quarter Master Division, Pol.Col.Ranakorn Suphasamut (รณกร ศุภสมุทร), says the officers have been dispatched from the Border Patrol Police Bureau and the Special Branch to safeguard and facilitate traffic at the athletes’ village. 25 officers have also been stationed there to inspect explosive objects.

Weapon scanning equipments operate around the clock at all entrances and exits of the village to ensure safety for the athletes throughout the 4th Asian Para Games scheduled from January 20-26 in Nakhon Ratchasime province.

ASEAN PARA GAMES

Thailand aim for a record

Thailand have set their sights on winning a record 200 gold medals after having raked in 136 golds in three days of competition at the Asean Para Games in Nakhon Ratchasima. The hosts surpassed the century mark yesterday when they won 51 golds for 136 in total _ 92 clear of second-placed Vietnam.

The Thais were dominant in the pool at His Majesty the King's 80th Birthday Anniversary Complex taking home 19 golds.

Other golds were won in athletics (14), wheelchair fencing (three), table tennis (one), shooting ( four), powerlifting (one), judo (five) and boccia (four). Boccia is a variation of bowls.

Tourism and Sports Minister happy with 4th ASEAN Para Games 2007

The Tourism and Sports Minister, Dr. Suvit Yodmani (สุวิทย์ ยอดมณี), expresses his satisfaction with the overall quality of the 4th ASEAN Para Games 2007. He is also pleased with the performance of Thai athletes in this event.

Dr. Suvit, who acts as the chairman of the committee responsible for organizing the 4th ASEAN Para Games 2007, and the Thai Olympic Council vice chairman, Mr. Chaipak Siriwat (ชัยภักดิ์ ศิริวัฒน์), traveled to the northeastern province of Nakhon Ratchasima to assess the services and facilities provided at the 4th ASEAN Para Games 2007. They also visited the Press Center at the Suranaree University of Technology.

Dr. Suvit says he is happy with the outcome of the 4th ASEAN Para Games 2007 as well as the overall success of Thai athletes. Besides the sporting activities, the Tourism and Sports Minister says the event is being held to accentuate friendship among the athletes from Southeast Asian country members.
