I purchased a WAChart for the ChiangMai area and was surprised to find out these are dated 30 years. Was told that this is what is used.

Although it depicts topo info, it lacks roads and navaids updates. If anyone knows of newer maps, would be much appreciated. Right now, bringing a regular road map in addition to my WAC seem to be the only thing to do.

Also a GPS is nice to have as i updated mine on the Garmin website. Garmin uses Jeppesen nav data. So, although I don't have paper info ( that I really like to have). I still have much of the nav aids info.

Thanks Monty for the re-registration info. It will be interesting to see how far I'd get with the DCA ,cause I don't have many of the listed documents . My airplane's a homebuilt.

After seeing the posts on the CH-701, I found the following video. I agree that it be a lot of fun in Thailand.

Yorkman, what brand of Psuedo Cub do you have?

T_Dog,

If you look up it is cgitt that has the Cub lookalike so you will need to ask him :o

There is now a CTSW by Flight Design flying in Thailand, the best selling light sport aircraft in the United States. The new and improved 2008 CTLS is now available and I've contacted the dealer in Bangkok to see about ordering one for later this year. Check it out on the internet website of Flight Design USA; it's a perfect airplane for Thailand. Runs on autofuel, 120 knots, lands short and slow, easy 800nm range!

Very nice indeed Sunrise. Its amazing how in the last 15 - 20 years or so these smaller companies have come in to fill the gap left by the major manufacturers, and now produce a much superior product rather than 1940's dinasaur technology. German design again, they are really very good indeed at this.

Just a passing thought, you do intend to keep inside or at least under cover? I see they have taken the sensible move of finishing in two pack rather than gel, but even so the experience in the world of gliders shows that this construction deteriorates very quickly in sunny/tropical climates if left outside.

By coincidence, I found this. The earlier model towing a glider

I wonder if it was that famous chinese pilot Wun Wing Loww :o

Huh, I think you where asking about my Cub?

It's called a Super Cuby and was built using plans from Wag aero in the states. Same as a regular cub with a 160 hp Lycoming pulled by a 82' borer prop, lower fuel+cargo pod, extended cargo compartment, extended gear. sorry no kitchen sink. Big difference is they used a Piper tri-pacer wings ( a bit shorter). Oh, and vortex generators for added lift, but still no room for kitchen sink.

I did think that would be it, but waited for your response. Wag Aero have for years offered every bit for a Cub or Super Cub, and the logical extension was their own plans and a kit. Very nice cgitt, if anything could be called a classic in Light Aviation that is it.

I flew a Super Cub with 180 HP as a glider tug for a while, and a Pawnee with 235 HP (same wings, almost, just upside down) and they are lots of fun.

I hope your importation plans go well

I have'nt flown in Thailand during the hot season. Can anyone tell me if it's worth trying it. Is there too much smoke in the air to see anything. I know there is a lot of smoke that hangs around in the Chiangmai area due to the valley we are in,but how is the visibility in the rest of Thailand.

I flew a lot in Idaho during the fire season, including one morning when 45 new fires were reported. Be ready for IFR! Haven't flown here, but I think the humidity haze and smoke combined would make it pretty bad. Anybody out there with a first-hand account? The Chonburi club is pretty active all year round so it is probably a lot better down there.

I couldn't help feeling rather envious of the Department of Agriculture/Forestry helicopter pilots fighting the fire on Doi Suthep yesterday. They did some superb flying and their control during filling and "backing the bag" in gusty winds and high density altitude was remarkable. Was close enough to see that they were enjoying themselves too. Being a helicopter pilot sure likes a fine career in the aviation sector........ If only I was younger!post-498-1206147968_thumb.jpg

Sunrise07, do you know any CH701 flying in the North?

Would love to take a flight on one of them.

If it is HS registered I assume you need a PPL to fly it.

Does something like a SPL exist in Thailand? The Czech factory does not build them anymore.

The building license expired in 2006.

Hi just ran into this thread so thought I'd bump it back up. I have quite a bit of time in airplanes and gliders with a bit of seaplane and helicopter time too but now I'm flying only microlights and hot air balloons up here in the north of LOS. Maybe someone can update me on what's currently needed to get my US CPL/IR endorsed in LOS; I heard that there's a new written exam on the rules... BTW that CH 701 looks like a great machine, especially in a TD setup!

Are there any helicopters for genral charter/flying schools etc in Los....not turbines.

I would doubt it seeing as there's hardly any fixed wing GA here either. I've thought about an R22 or the new Rotorway Talon, but only in my more manic moments...

Yeah like imagine getting an engineer here to service it.

Then imagine the cost to fly in an engineer to fix his servicings.

A guy I know mentioned he saw a couple of robo's parked at a property in isaan somewhere, so just wondering what they might be used for. He wants to learn to fly. I would not mind going for a jaunt myself one day also.

I remember when farangs couldn't even have a cell phone here, so I guess I'm not surprised. Guess we're lucky to be allowed to drive,,,

BTW is your 701 registered U- or HS- ?

It's registered HS!

In that case who annuals it for you? I don't even know what's required for my trike! U-S20

PS check out this link; better viewed in their high quality mode...

I see that there are a number of sporting and special interest groups under Community Forums, but no "Aviation in Thailand" forum. It seems that there a lot of pilots, ex-pilots, aviation enthusiasts, and radio control modelers in Thailand that might be able to support a new forum like this. If so, please reply and maybe the moderators at the support desk will set one up for us if enough respond.

I fear it might be a bit specialised, and a lot of stuff that really relates to travel would end up being posted there

Would you guys be OK with including Parachuting into this site ? I dont think there is any civilian skydiving yet in Thailand only the military base at Ao Manao in Prachuap Khiri Khan. I was not allowed to jump there when I made enquiries a few years ago. Maybe paragliding and hanggliding people would like to communicate here too
