Laem Chabang gas pipe explosion injures 9; 2 critical

A gas pipe located in a Laem Chabang (แหลมฉลัง) ship yard colony in Sriracha district of Chonburi province burst yesterday evening (January 28) critically injuring 2 workers and leaving 9 with minor wounds. The ship yard belonged to UniThai Sea Yard and Engineering Company Limited which constructs large metal frame vessels.

The incident occurred when a damaged LPG gas pipe burst as workers were using it cut large metal plates. Rescue workers traveled to the scene and transported injured individuals to hospitals for care.

Initial investigations have shown that workers were unaware the gas pipe had a leak in it. When escaped gas fumes met with flames from torches being used by the workers an explosion was ignited.

Fatal blast at seaport

One worker was killed and eight others injured following an explosion yesterday evening at a shipyard in Chon Buri's Laem Chabang seaport in Sri Racha district.

One man died instantly after the explosion at 6pm at UniThai Shipyard and Engineering, while another worker was seriously injured.

An initial police report said the blast could have occurred as a result of an acetylene gas leak at a dock in which a ship was undergoing repair work.

Witnesses said the dead worker, Sanit Phromebuppha, was hit by a flying iron bar and fell off a 10-metre building while others said the blast blew the workers five metres into the air.

A survivor, Phaithoon Namprapha, said he and around 20 workers were cutting pieces off a large metal sheet near the dock and the blast "came out of nowhere". He said sparks from the blowtorches could have been ignited by escaping gas.

Laem Chabang police gave similar accounts to the survivors but declined to provide details into the cause of the explosion until a complete crime-scene investigation is completed next week.

Whew! Didn't think I was losing my mind! - there was one a few years ago.... I sat on the highway in my car for hours because of it......

1999 December 2nd. Thailand, Laem Chabang, Thai Oil Compamy: a tank farm fire in the refinery 90 miles southeast of Bangkok; 7 people died, 18 were injured, and approximately 4,000 residents had to be evacuated. After an initial explosion that damaged several firefighting vehicles 9 million gallons of oil in 4 tanks went up in flames. It took more than 36 hours to extinguish the blaze with at least 20,000 gallons of foam.

Cutting steel plates in a gas pipeline......... :o

How stupid can you get???????????

the article says it is suspected it was an acetylene leak.

so a good chance the oxy/acetylene cutting equipment was just in an unsafe state - leaking hose/s , no/not working flash arrestors - a common safety issue .

Doing hot work in a live plant is not unsafe when the correct precautions and procedures are in place and are followed correctly.

Didn't they have a similar explosion there just a few years ago??

That would be the Thai Oil Refinery, when the tank farm went up. I saw the aftermath after the fire was eventually put out. Lucky it happened at night time, when all of the admin workers had left already. :o

The Unithai shipyard accident was an acetylene tank that caught fire. No-one uses LPG (Liquified Petroleum Gas) to "cut large metal plates". Lazy reporting again...

Thanks for the clarification. Shows that at least some are not so lazy - Thanks again!
