10 days ago my friend slipped over and sustained rather a nasty cut on the pad of his thumb. We went to the hospital and the wound was cleaned and stitched. He says the tip of the thumb is now numb. But the main problem is that if he touches the wound or knocks it he gets a shooting pain similar to a 240v electric shock. He has full mobility of the thumb however.

I guess he severed or damaged a nerve and there's not a lot to be done 10 days on.

Does anybody know what is causing this excessive pain, whether it can be alleviated, and most importantly whether it will go?

I can't say what the problem and prognosis is (even a hand specialist would need to examione him) but I can tell you where to refer him to:

Dr. Panupan

at either Phayathai 2 Hospital Sundays 9-11 AM

or at Chao Phya Hospital Thirsdays 6-7 PM

Foremost hand specialist in the country. He's a professor at Siriraj and heads up the microsurigcal team that reattaches limbs etc, the bive are his private practice housrs. call the hospitals to confirm the times and that he's in country.
