:D seems it was your own fault, you left australia, you only had to apply for a permanent residency visa , and unless you were going to be some sort of burden on the australian govt, you would have recieved it straight away, you would have even been offered australian citizenship,It sounds like my wife and I were in the same situation, now we have the best of both worlds, 6 months a year in australia and the other 6 months where ever we want, mostly thailand but the odd trip to europe and uk too. Of course after being away for along time knowhere feels like it did when you were young, we remember the good things ,, and give thanks for everyday ,no matter where we are :o Nignoy

Wrong Nignoy, every time we went to renew our retirement visa we ask about permanent residency. They said it was not available if you were over 60. We had to bring $500,000 AUD into the country, pass a physical and jump through the hoops but they are not interested in anyone over 60 no matter how many years you have been there.

For years after we received our visa we would go in every 2 years fill out a single sheet of paper and give them $165. When they changed the rules we had to provide them with a list of every place we had lived and every place we had ever worked since we graduated from school plus we had to show proff of continuious medical coverage and if we had visited anywhere outside of Australia for over 30 days a police clearance from that place. And it was not just once but every 2 years when we went back after they changed the rules they wanted the same information, they left little doubt that they were not happy about retired people living there.

Yeah, it's really that bad. The only way I could survive back home would be to get another job, if I could find one. Now is definitely not good, as the economy is shrinking. As for social life, I could look forward to senior coffee with the geezers at the local diner (see attached article) and dream about some overseas foxx, with whom to do my last harrah. Since I don't have grandchildren and don't play golf, I wouldn't have much to talk about.

I think I would much rather be in Thailand where everyday is an exciting game to protect yourself from being fleeced of your live savings by some wily sex kitten. Thank God for choices.

I travel to Thailand a fair bit. I love the people, there alot more friendlier then here in Oz, everyone here is in a rush and uptight.

Thai's seem layed back and happy.

I also LOVE hot weather, so I hopefully be living there in a few years.

Compared to here:

Australia is generally cleaner, better and cleaner beaches, less polluted, driving is mostly safe, can buy V8 cars and powerful motorbikes with ease, less hitmen, less corruption, less scams, service is better, stores honour warranties and give refunds, no coups, I can buy land, building quality better, better infrastructure, better roads, drinkable tap water, better internet, HDTV, full range DVDs and CDs, speaks English, has footpaths, police don't roll you, can ususally fight one on one in a scrap, less blackouts, food healthier with less DDT and on and on.

Thailand has very attractive women.

Not a hard decision really, Thailand wins it hands down.

I could go back to Texas and my family, but I won't. Nice place, good people, great warm weather, etc. But they are all too wrapped up in the rat race; Texans are far more homophobic than Thais; cost of living is too high; it would be too hard to supplement Social Security pension, etc. Nice place to visit for a few weeks, but no place to live!

Why do you say, Texans fear Texans and where do you get the impression,Thais may fear Thais.

Rubbish, I would say the complete opposite.

Was not, the Thaksin Government a Thai love Thai party?

Mind you, I could guess many Texans fear George Bush, but not Texans in general.

Where are you coming from? Blondie

I think you should check your dictionary as to the meaning of the word HOMOPHOBIC or at least consider the context in which the poster intended. I am sure you will have figured it out by now.

Almost retired in Thailand a couple of years ago after traveling there for decades.

SOOOOOOOOOO glad I didn't!

I've got a good job and plenty of hot Thai chicks right here in San Diego.

Next year however I plan to return to my monthly holiday over Christmas.

Thailand is my playground... :o

I agree, the females in Thailand are 1000 times better then farang land, Also the beaches in sydney are pretty bad, Australia have there clean and polluted beaches just like Thailand, but Pattaya beach is more polluted then any in Oz IMO.

Fortunately I don't go to Pattaya for the beaches. However I discovered a very nice beach (considering) just north of down town around soi 18 on my last trip.

Very nice indeed... :o

I am coming from Houston, Texas! And, about 7 other metro areas of Texas, ending in 2003.

Many Texans fear gays, Mexicans, Asians, other Texans, etc. Thais do not fear their fellow Thais, and they do not kill farang for being gay. Bush has nothing to do with this.

As I said, generally the USA (including Texas) has decent people, a few places with decent weather, a few good long term jobs, obscenely expensive health care, lots of modern conveniences, great fattening food, great music, etc. But as a place to live the rest of my life, I hope to enjoy my remaining years in the developing world.

Posted (edited)

For me, it (the USA) would be that bad. I would have to work. After leaving the workforce about 5 years ago because my industry melted down, I would be lucky to get even a basic, boring, soul crushing job that would barely pay for a small apartment in an unpleasant high crime neighborhood, much less good food, entertainment, attractive companions (he he), and health care. Here I have a nice life and don't have to work. It all depends on your circumstances. I used to have a great life there, but going back now would be a nightmare. And the more years I live here, the worse going back would be. Going back voluntarily would truly be a crazy decision. John Edwards was right, there are two Americas. I used to live in the first one, but if I went back I would be living (more like dying) in the second one.

Socially isolated society.

Over governed, laws for idiots.

You mean things like this. (See attached) Glad they are graduating to less hazardous substances now, such as methamphetamine, cocaine, heroin and prescription drugs. Much less a problem to society no doubt. Gone are the days of good Cuban cigars. The dirty old things.

Are Thai females really that good looking? (Personally I don’t see it.) Or is it that Thai females are often impoverished, downtrodden and will sleep with just about anyone no matter how old or ugly in a desperate attempt to escape from the grinding poverty and misery that they will otherwise have to live with? Sorry got a bit carried away there…

Total generalisation there, you probaly never been to Thailand and just know it from brouchures, either that or just been to Patters. In Oz alot of girls are just as easy in the pubs (but im young)

And yes I do think Thai's are that good looking, we all have different tastes I suppose, I like the lighter Thai's, Some of them are almost perfect.

I've lived in many different places in this world and had more than my fair share of women.

Ben traveling to Thailand foe decades.

IMHO it's hard to beat a young Thai/Chinese beauty.

It is all a matter of taste though... :o

I miss the changes of season in my home country and the long summer days.

My wife likes the fact that it seems so organized and clean over there.

I would like for my son to be equally proud of both of his cultures even though he lives in Thailand.

My country of birth has a lot going for it, and I would like him to know that.

I think you hit it on the head...spot-on :o

Some Thai birds are good looking (like anywhere) but the bell-curve is in effect in LOS like anywhere else and most are average, and a few dogs thrown in the mix too. I personally think the Chinese girls in Singapore are the bomb :D

Must admit you've got a point.

Beside the great year round weather one of the interesting phenomenons here in San Diego/Southern Calif is that we are SATURATED young gorgeous Asian gals. Many students, many compulsive gamblers.

It's kind of like shooting fish in a barrel. Good bless high college tuition and gambling... :D

I agree 100%. The Chinese Singaporean girls are curvacious, intelligent, well spoken, independent, yet very feminine.

I live during the summer in Europe and the rest of the year here. Perfect for me. I just can't stand the shitty weather back home. As soon as I have kids I will have to spend more time in Europe though because I won't let them grow up in this society here. The school system is a joke and the general attitudes within the Thai society are not right for my kids.

At the end of the day MOST people stay in their home country...only a few thousand leave and a few thousand want to move there.....so I would suggest that the wrong question is being asked.....there is nothing wrong with "farangland" - (can't say I like the expression..but...) - or the people who live there...it is the people who leave who have the problem. What that problem is could be a million different things....may not be a bad problem, but THEY are the ones leaving...they are the minority.

That is a pretty humorously twisted way to look at expatriation.

Sure, the people who leave their home country are different than those who don't, just because they did it, but that doesn't mean there is anything wrong with them or their home country. (Well, actually there is something wrong with both of them, because no person or country is perfect, but I think I made my point.)

In the case of the US, there are millions of Americans living abroad, hardly just thousands!

America is a land of immigrants so the gene that makes me people wonder about finding a better life in another place is very strong in the American national character. Because the US is so physically large and diverse, most Americans satisfy that wanderlust within the borders, but no wonder so many do look further.
