Medical Council drafting regulations for sex change surgeons

BANGKOK: -- The Medical Council of Thailand has established a sub-committee to draft regulations for practitioners of sexual reassignment surgery, Council president Somsak Lolekha said Saturday.

Dr. Somsak said the sub-committee will be comprised of 21 medical doctors, surgeons and lawyers and that he himself would lead it.

Regulations are to cover appropriate ages, durations and psychological affect on those wishing to undertake sexual reassignment surgery, he said.

The aim in drafting the regulation is to ensure safety for those undertaking the changes, he said.

With the international medical services sector becoming tougher and more competitive, Thailand is being promoted as an ideal venue for sex transfer operations.

Legal provisions to regulate the range of operations – especially among teenagers – should be in place to ensure higher standards for sex-change operations.
