Saw on TV tonight where they cool a patient to 12 deg, heart stops, no more brain function ( cooling not required for some :o ) - clinically dead.

They have about 60 mins window to operate with a non beating heart ( i.e. on aneurysm's ) .

Question to medical buffs........ if cooled body down, still had heart beat, but low, low metabolism....... ( assuming you come out alive & fully functional when re-heated ) - would you "live" longer. ( i.e. can be woken up in 50 years - and live the remainder of you "normal" years.

Looks like star trek is around the corner.

( they showed a mouse which was "hibernated" on H2s, heat beat went from 600 / min to 100.).

My wife wont approve, so dont worry, hypothetically only.

Nope the use of cooling and stopping the heart is a very risky and very rarely done procedure. Barrow Neurological Institute in Phoenix Arizona pioneered the use of hypothermia to induce temporary hibernation working after studying patients that had drown in frozen lakes being revived 1 hour plus after the heart stopped with little or no neurological deficits. The first high profile case was a woman with a brain aneurysm that was pregnant. The doctors successfully stopped the mothers heart repaired the defect and the fetus was kept alive and was born healthy. But the mother was left with some neurological problems similar to a stroke victim. That type of treatment is a last resort only.

Yep, saw that there were saw neurological issues, but not all patients. Was not talking about stopping the heart, rather, letting it tick on at a far slower rate ( like a hibernating animal ). Again, based on today's technology, maybe not recommended, but in 5 or 10 years from now, possibility ? Even if were to come out with neurological issue, would it be possible to go to sleep at 40, and then maybe wake up as a "42 year old" in 50 years from now ?

Could be, But back in the 60's they were predicting the end of disease and that we would all have flying cars. And wouldn't it be better to go into hibernation at 40 and wake up as an 18 year old? It would be nice, but I don't think I would be standing in line to be the first to try it.

:D

I am afraid so, but the Easter Bunny and Tooth Fairy are real so don't despair. :o

Actually, I think control of personal metabolism is one of the goals of Hatha Yoga (the physical kind of yoga) and is indeed generally aimed towards extending life and health.

and in diving we would try to calm ourselves to reduce air consumption (which really makes a big change)
