I reckon you have to give the smokes away completely whilst on patches or other aids. Otherwise your body is not really fighting the addiction. Your nicotine levels are essentially the same or higher due to the patches so you're not really achieving much

I tried everything on the market for years, including hypnotherapy, with little or no success. I just couldn't get away from the ACT of smoking, I just felt like i should be doing it every hour regardless of whether i wanted one or not.

At the moment I am trying Champix, a pill regimen from Roche with fantastic success. Have not touched a ciggie in over 2 months with little or no cravings from day 10 when i was required to stop completely.

It may be worth your while checking out if its available in thailand, I'd highly recommend it. My mother started on them at the same time as me with the same success. We both marvel at how EASY it is!

If you can't get them here try the UK, US or Australia if you are travelling there. Singapore may have it. In Australia they are available as doctor prescribed, where you can get them at the subsidised rate of $60 for a 3 month course which involves re-visiting the doc for an update a month into it. Or you can get the whole lot at once for a couple of hundred bucks.

Good luck and keep at it man, every time you try gets you closer

I believe it's called Chantix not Champix. A report came out last week in the US that there were some serious side effects with Chantix, severe depression, suicide, etc. Who knows, but still a warning.

Hi, thaks for the responses...went to my lung specialist today who, after little number of cigs last 8 weeks, have improved my lung capacity : from about 50% 6 months ago to 65% now!!! Very pleased..still have a couple a day..and step 2 patches, and 2mg gum, and it's hard..yes, day by day.

Champix: see here

I have heard bad bad stories about this drug.....also known as Chantix (I think that is the US name for the same drug that was I hear, fast tracked through FDA in 6 months.)

There is aslo Ziaban which I THINK is also known as Wellbutrin. I took this 2 years ago, and it is very good. I had to stop it as I couldn't urinate..well, I could, but was just as though I had a prostrate problem...trickled out after about 5 mins standing at the bowl busting...one GOOD side effect was explosive orgasms...hee hee.

smoking, drugs and drinking Are what take our lives away before our time, as we all know, I was able to quit hard drugs, 30+ years ago, I had to hit bottom to do it, I have been a problem drinker most of my life and I smoked, I moved to Thailand 8 years ago to live and die here, I became the total boss of me, 4 years ago, Thank you Buddha, Thank you God, and I decided that I want to live, be healthy

and make love, as long as I can, so it was quite easy, to realize what I needed to do, and one needs to find other things to do, so you don't go bananas, I found that for me it is Waster-Sizing, Bending at the waist to pick up the waste and getting rid of both, I go to the beach and I exercise, by picking up the plastic and the Toxic cigarette filters that are every where, so that children don't put the Toxic Filters into their mouth and get very sick, and I pick up the plastic and filters, before they find there way into the ocean and are ate by, Fish, Dolphins, Turtles, Sea Birds, and many more, some die and some don't and we might eat them, we all want health and happiness, "Waster-Size", which is Tam Boon, Giving back and it is great exercise, eat right and above all, love yourself and keep your BUTTS to yourself, "The life of the people is in the land"

JUST DO IT, Take a 100% control of your life, ONLY YOU CAN, NOT A PATCH OR A PILL,

UNLESS YOU THINK THEY WORK, THEN THEY WILL, GOOD LUCK AND GOOD LIFE

I have smoked since I was around 15, about 40 years now. I once stopped about 10 years ago, got stressed a couple of years later, and started again.

On 19th February this year, I am pleased to say I stopped again: from 20+ a day to nothing!!

How did I do this? Well, a 19-year-old Korean student that I teach offered me a reward if I could stop as she did not like the smell of smoke from my clothes in the classroom. She offered to kiss me!! How could I refuse to stop?!?!?!

I did some research on the net before trying them and saw the same warnings. I too tried Zaiban a couple years ago but had to get off them because I would get nauseous when working in the heat. I also found them to be so-so.

I think its up to the individual's outlook as to how they handle side-effects. I was warned by the doctor about depression, suicidal thoughts etc but so far have had no bad thoughts, just elation that I no longer smoke. One side effect I have had is a little headache around bedtime but that could have more to do with the 2 or 3 Singha sleeping pills I have every night! Another side effect is really sticky phlegm getting caught at the back of the throat, you know the kind you just can't move? Annoying.

As for lung capacity, every time I get the inkling to smoke I take a big gulp of air, as big as I can. To do that and have no wheezing or coughing fit afterwards is something I haven't been able to do for 20 years and it reminds me of why I'm doing it.

Keep it up Colin, you'll get there.
