My son is off Heroin and is reducing his meths (140ml) gradualy. Can he get meths here with a presciption from his Doctor and letter from his Care worker. I would like him to visit me but he needs his meths. Please dont be judgmental, I have been to hel_l and back for the last 10 years with his addiction and he is now trying. I would like him to get down to 10mil and take him to Thamkrabok Monestry.

Unfortunately methadone is not licensed for use in Thailand.

I believe the most common practice here is to use bupenorphine (brand name: temegesic), which is licensed for use here. However I would hesitate to recommend that anyone switch from methadone to it, particulalry someone who seeems to be progressing on methadone. In addition to the general upset to the nervous system that a change may cause, buphenorphine does have some euphoric effects with the result that, while it is therefore easy to get people to take, it can be hard to wean them off it.

Another point to seriously consider is that Thailand, with its comparatively easy access to illicit substances, is not a very good environment for a person with a history of substance abuse.

I would advise that youy wait until he is successfully off methadone first and even then, only have him come if he is really sincere about wanting to go to Wat Thamkrabok. Otherwise coming here (and to the Pattaya area no less!) could lead to a set back.

You have my full sympathy for what you have been through. It is truly a testimony to a mother's love that you have stood by him all these years. And kudos to him for making serious steps towards recovery.

Good luck to you both.

Hi, I can't really offer you any advice in regards to obtaining methadone, but I would just like to wish you and your son the best of luck. I am an ex-patient of Wat Thamkrabok and know that it works.

While I was at the temple there were people coming off methadone and the view was that it was harder to come off than heroin. Again I wish him the best with it. I feel confident that the monks will be able to detox your son safely.

It is great to see your faith in your son as we addicts tend to destroy the lives of those who care about us. Wat Thamkrabok is a special place and it can work magic on even hopeless cases. All your son needs to bring with him is a willingness to change.
