Special Report from FORBES

The World's Billionaires

Edited by Luisa Kroll 03.05.08, 6:00 PM ET

post-13995-1204762633_thumb.jpg Warren Buffett

After 13 years on top, Bill Gates is no longer the richest man in the world. That honor now belongs to his friend and sometimes bridge partner Warren Buffett.

Riding the surging price of Berkshire Hathaway stock, Buffett has seen his fortune swell to an estimated $62 billion, up $10 billion from a year ago.

Gates is now worth $58 billion and is ranked third richest in the world. He is up $2 billion from a year ago, but would have been as rich--or richer--than Buffett, had Microsoft not made an unsolicited bid for Yahoo! at the beginning of February. Mexican telecom mogul Carlos Slim Helú now ranks as the world's second richest person with a net worth of $60 billion.

But hasn't Gates given 30 or 50 billion to charity?

As has Buffett. He has pledged to give over 30 billion in the next 20 years to the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. At 1 1/2 billion a year.

He wants to give away 99% of his fortune before he dies.

The foundation is reportedly having trouble working out how to spend all their money.

You know, they will probably give it to worthy causes with a list of non-worthy accountants and lawyers as long as your arm.....sad

Croc, let's book a ticket and help them out, shall we ? I'm quite sure we can work it out, together.

After we've finished we'll have a sip or two on a nice beach somewhere... :o

I doubt the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation trustees (which include their namesakes) will have that much trouble. When McDonald widow Jean Kroc gave a billion or two to the Salvation Army, it had to hire some new financial managers.

That's correct; Croc and myself... :o

Just remember this is only Public wealth and not private wealth. So it is assesed by what is on the public domain and not what is held by Nominee's and Private Companies. This may change the list a little if we had the complete story here.

Sorry, I really don't understand your point, as this is your previous post.

What I was talking about was private wealth that cannot be tracked such as Nominee Companies and Private Companies, that don't publish public statements etc.

correct! what Forbes does is multiplying share value with known number of shares held by the individual not taking into consideration the actual wealth. but whatever... none of us will appear on the Forbes list :o so why bother?
