I want to upgrade my laptop to something a bit newer. It's an IBM Thinkpad, bought new two years ago. 1.66MHz, 2x40GB hard drives, 767MB RAM. I have the receipt and it still has a year on the guarantee. Have never had any problems with it. Has all virus software, etc. installed.

I paid 44,000 baht for it, but will sell it for 20,000 baht ono. I can bike it round to anywhere on the island.

^Maybe I'm asking for too much. I'm open to offers on this one. Anything above 10,000 baht would be good.

hmmm thinkpad, which Series?

looks like this "offer" will remain in the shelf for sometime - less then 20.xxx buys a brand new model incl. warranty - Acer, Toshiba... Dualcore, well to make it short - today's standard fittings - shop around.

Sorry, drop the price and you may sell it!

Where did he get it from? I can't decide whether to buy my new one in Thailand or online.

Sorry to say it but your pricing is WAAYYYY off.. 8 - 10k second hand and you MIGHT shift it.. Brand new ACERs with better specs are 15k ish.

Second hand laptops are worth so little they are best given to Thai girls for net use / sick buffalo stories.. I am not joking.

Just bought one for my Thai staff a few days ago. Looked for the cheapest named notebook. Acer was 18,990 Baht in Big C basement (incl tax & copy software). Never seen at just 15K baht. Gave extra 512K memory, bag, and mouse for free. Great spec for someone just using for Internet. Built in camera as well.

I've got no idea really. I've never sold a computer before. Well, as I said, I'm open to offers -- and it's IBM not ACER, so a brand new version wouldn't be 15k-ish.

It may say IBM, but, IBM notebooks were bought by Lenovo, a Chinese company, a few years ago.

Your notebook was made by a Chinese company, not IBM..

For the love of Pete. I just want to sell the thing.

Agreed, you don't warrant all this agro.

Naka.

Actually I though the members were trying to help this guy sell his computer by educating him on new prices versus second hand prices. Yes yes, I know he's selling a more expensive IBM, but I myself don't realyy care about 'brand' names. I just care about physical specifications, and bit bangs for my Baht. In my view all computers are obsolete after just 3 years (at most). And I buy new every 3 years (at most).

i do the same. but let's be honest. is the expression "obsolete" justified? i have (besides my two laptops) three computers running when i'm in my study. one of them is approximately 5 years old but it is doing the daily bread-and-butter jobs such as spreadsheets, e-mail, internet surfing, research down/uploading as fast and as reliable as the latest 2 machines which i bought 3 months -respectively a couple of weeks- ago.

having said so i admit that in a few years i will be spending again money and will buy the "latest and most sophicated" ones which are on the market.

why will i do that? i have no bloody idea! :o

Once you get used to the speed of the latest computer, especially when booting up, you will not want to go back to your old computer. I always keep my latest old computer as back up, and it's tedious waiting those extra few seconds on the older one. The 3rd older generation computers get given away to the wife's nieces & nephews, who are grateful for any sort of computer.

i boot up twice a day so boot-up speed is more or less irrelevant for me. this speed has improved a lot with a SATA2 drive. programs start faster too but otherwise i don't realize any speed gains at all.

Great discussion.. very educational. But, I've no idea what's a SATA2 drive ?? It's a great idea to buy extra RAM when buying your computer, as a few years later that type of RAM might no longer be easily available. I've often been caught out that way. My last Acer notebook had only 256K RAM, after 2 years I added another 512K RAM (had to order from Bangkok). Big big difference in loading speeds. My staff use my even older desktop computer (for Internet browsing) and it only has 128K RAM, and I cannot find anyone to supply more memory of that type (about 8 years old). Wow, it's so so slow booting up, and cannot efficiently handle the McAfee in background, and can only handle Windows 98 OS. And even that's a struggle.

my PCs have all the RAM i could fit in. but RAM alone does not make a PC speedier.

for SATA and SATA 2 please google. it would be too tedious to explain here.
