Chatuchak Market -- Some Questions

The last time I was in the Chatuchak market it was undergoing some serious renovations. Coming in from out of town, I'd like to not waste a trip, or a day, if someone could kindly answer some "where" and "when" questions -- regarding plants, birds, and tropical fish:

1) If I remember correctly, "Plants Day" is best on Wednesday. Has either that, or the location, changed?

2) What is the best day for tropical fish, and are they still in the same location?

3) I never have been able to find a section for birds. Where are they located and is there a best day?

As a side question/observation, having spent some time in the plant areas of both Chatuchak and the Bang Yai district, I felt that the latter was better. Does anyone have any such thoughts one way or the other?

I was just in Chatuchak and the people there told me Wed is still Plants Day.

Tropical fish are still in the same location but a whole section of that has gone which is a same because some of my favourite fish shops went along with it. Any weekday seems to be fine for fish shopping.

If you approach the market from the local JJ park then you will have no problem finding the pet section. If you go through the all the fish shops you will find the birds, though I have little interest in keeping birds and have no idea if there is any particular day that's better to find them. I would assume it's the same as the fish, any weekday will do.

Yes, because you bought an owl from quite possibly an illegal source and don't have any idea on how to keep it.

Furthermore you don't seem to care too much about the bird's welfare which is why it'll probably be dead before the month's out.

Burman: Sorry to hear that. There was a very small shop that she called the "Planatarium", in which she had some of the most gorgeous aquascapes that I had ever seen. Does this sound like one that you are/were familiar with? I was hoping to revisit that shop, but I fear now that it may be one of those that has gone away because it seemed to be running on pretty thin margins.

Anyway, if you have any idea where this shop may have gone I would most appreciate the info.

Actually I think where it all got demolished their wasn't any aquascapes shops in that section, but I lost my favourite Betta supplier and there was another couple of good shops that sold some real oddities as well.

Now if you walk inside to the fish shops that are under cover you will find a few aquascape shops, if we are talking about the same 'Amano' style aquascaping.

Now there is a couple of new shops like this and I hoping you can find one of them from these directions.

If you come from the JJ park, and you walk along the main road where the fish shops / and market are on the left hand side (on the right side there is a big children's museum or something, quite a large odd shaped building), and if you continue walking up the left hand side of the road there a small shop at the front, got a quite a few nice aquascaped tanks. You can find all your amano substrates here, specialist co2 units, several types of moss etc.

Ok, hope that helps. I think you will pleasantly surprised by some of the new fish shops that have opened up there in the last year or so.

Yes, I was talking about "Amano" style aquascaping -- thank you for the nice link, I haven't seen this one.

I haven't seen any, but you should be able to find someone there (at one of the arowana shops) that could get one for you, or at least point you in the right direction. Hope you have a pond ready for it!

There is a place on the top floor of Seri Center on SiNakarin that you may want to look at too!

Okay, well I haven't been there for slightly more than a year, and don't have a good way to describe where it is that I go to see birds, but I have gone, many, many days, to see birds, every day of the week. Birds are basically the only reason I go there.

And what I do, is go to the fish area, what I guess is usually called, the "weekend market" and then I start walking behind those, to an area that I have found has birds all the time. It is sort of an edge of the whole market deal there, and has only fish on one side of the street. Then I just keep walking back, behind all of that, even though most of that is closed because I usually go, NOT on the weekends, but also, again on the weekends ...people who have animals there need to be there everyday.

I mean, it is not a huge area, and the bird people are sort of spaced out. If you find the rooster fighting people, you will find some bird around them, and in the general area, like the general 1 sq km of that area. I would say the birds in the immediate area of the roosters are not maybe the best, and don't think it is the only area, and for obvious reasons, it is the area, where I would be most concerned about disease.

THe birds are also to some extent mixed in with some of the dogs, there are a few bird cage dealers, bird supply dealers, you just have to move around and find out. I have a few cards of people I order supplies from, NOT birds, if you want to PM me I can look for the cards and give you the info. In those general areas anyway, you can find birds. But sometimes, if you are NOT in BKK, you can find good birds, at better prices, at the original places they come from, you just need to know a few people.

If you want to PM me, and let me know what you are looking for, I might be able to help you connect with someone, w/o any % for myself, or course, I am just a bird owner, lover, and have learned where the limited places to get them are, as well as supplies, which are even more limited.

Let me just warn you that if you get big parrots here, and are really concerned about them, the supplies from outside the country will kick your ass. They just don't have any good ones here, you have to pay full price and import them from UK or USA, whatever, or be very creative person with safe supplies. It isn't easy, I only have 3 parrots and find it difficult to make/buy/find toys for them, and I have a reasonable budget set aside, more than most people's rent and girlfriend budget. And beer and visa budget, and furniture, and electric ... and UBC, and golf, and spa!!!

And remember you won't be able to take this bird with you to any other countries due to bird flu and that is likely to last for a very long time. And they live for 60 years on average, don't know what bird you are thinking about.

I am the OP. Thank you for all of your responses.

Having obtained some first-hand answers to some of my questions, I will share them here:

1) I visited the C. market on Wednesday, and found that it certainly *is* "Plants Day", and that was confirmed by several vendors that I asked.

2) I was told by two vendors that Thursday is the best day for tropical fish. However, I was impressed by the number of fish shops that were open on Wednesday.

3) I was told that Saturday and Sunday are the best days for birds. However, I was impressed by the number of bird shops that were open on Wednesday.

I hope this info might be helpful to someone.

Fish are there everyday because it is implausible to haul your tanks in & out just for a weekend.

Along that side road - behind the park you will start to see shops selling fish. When I was there last there was a huge amount of construction going on with many new shops opening.

As usual Flowerhorns are the main event. I really walked that area one day & found a parking garage right behind the fish.

There is another very nice shop - just along from the MRT station "Phuket Fish" incredibly good shop & across the alley that have one store exclusively marine fish. BEAUTIFUL.
